OK guys....just checked the codes since my check engine light has been of for a few days now..It gives me codes po0410 according to the caddy service manual the secondary air pump went out :( Im thinking this is basically the smog pump right? I just did emissions this year and I am not due until next year.. My question is how much of a "must fix" is this..Can this wait until I get closer to emmisions test or will this cause other problems to the car.. I would fix it now but holidays and money is tight. :noidea:

Thanks

That pump supplies fresh air (extra oxygen) to the exhaust manifolds for a short time at startup/warmup in order to light off the cat quicker.

If you live in a temperate climate it is not necessarily a "must fix" fault, but if you live in the northern tier of states you might want to fix it as soon as is convenient.

I believe your unit is on the flat down under the air intake system, next to the fender inner stamping. You get to it by jacking up the LF and removing the wheel and inner plastic fender liner - a 15 minute inspection operation. Replacement takes a half hour and is with simple hand tools. The fault is usually caused by water ingestion which rusts the compressor. The new kits have a re-design of the air intake hose, which now goes up into the engine compartment instead of drawing air from the lower inside of the fender area = splash moisture. You might try a look in www.car-part.com.

Thanks Submariner!

I currently live in PHX, AZ the hot weater is just about over..Its going to be in the mid 80's next few months..Can I wait until after the holidays? I found a new pump on GMdirect for $95 and the hose for $50..Is the hose a necessary purchase? I really am trying to wait until after the holidays but if I can't then I have to do it. Im sure I can do it myself so labor wont be an issue. Seems like pretty basic stuff wich is all I can do lol..I had a neighbor come by and he told me that that pump can be shut off? will that make the engine light turn off??? Not sure if he knows what he is talking about but he is a mechanic haha

You're OK in Phoenix.......as time and $$$ permit, lay in the necessary parts and then spend a morning dong the change. The hose is probably the "updated" piece which goes up to the air intake duct - it's not really necessary to drill a hole and stick the tip in the air duct, so you can get away with simply running a properly sized length of hose from your existing hose up into the engine compartment and wire tie it out of sight and interference with machinery or cables.

I don't think you can just "turn off" the pump and/or its monitor system: it's a legally mandated part of the emissions controls system and has several other monitors in its bag of tricks, not just the P0410.

Curiously, in the 4 years I've owned this STS I've heard that pump run just four times, and only at cold start, cold morning. No codes, though.

In colder weather you should be able to hear the pump...it's located by the front driver side wheel. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Check the fuse under the hood, its the third fuse left from the top(50amp).
