View Full Version : Mom's 84 Fleetwood Brougham jayoldschool 10-31-09, 11:52 PM I've mentioned mom's car a few times, so it is probably time that the car gets its own post.
My father bought it when he was diagnosed with cancer, he had always dreamed of having a Caddy while driving Chevys. He bought it from a pilot that had purchased it in FL and driven it back to Ottawa. It was mint, and still is. Never seen a flake of snow in its entire life. Treated to regular oil changes, no full throttle acceleration, etc. After dad died, mom was driving it. Started it up one day, and it sounded like someone was trying to knock down a bank vault door with a sledgehammer. I had never heard rod knock before, and I don't want to hear it again. The car was so mint, she didn't want to let it go. That, and the big sentimental value. So, she drove it down to the Cadillac dealer, and told them to put a new engine in it. You don't want to know how much it cost. I have taken very good care of it, and it continues to be reliable. She just got back from a road trip with it, and it performed very well. Not bad for a 25 year old car. I need to get her HVAC sorted out (believe it needs a climate display head and/or a programmer) but that is not a big deal.

Is that your RMW sneaking into the 2nd pic? I love those. Wagons ftw. jayoldschool 11-01-09, 12:06 AM Good eye! Yes, I have wagon fever, too. I will never be without one. Buying that Roadie is the best money I have spent on a car. I have already bought its replacement:

Your wagons are neat too! :) csbuckn 11-01-09, 01:42 AM thats a nice brougham, you should get her an eggcrate grill for christmas. dirt_cheap_fleetwood 11-01-09, 01:48 AM Nice car Jay. Do you have a room above your garage or is it just an unnecessarily tall roof? :) outsider 11-01-09, 09:00 AM thats a nice brougham, you should get her an eggcrate grill for christmas.
I have one off my 87 if you want one...I switched it from the egg crate style to that style grill. I like that one better for some reason :) I~LUV~Caddys8792 11-01-09, 09:53 AM They look great in white. What color is the interior? Lazarus_Rooney 11-01-09, 02:31 PM I can imagine the look on the faces of the mechanics when she said "put a new engine in it" sven914 11-01-09, 03:26 PM So, when this engine dies, what are going to put in? Are you going with the 307 to keep the general mild and smooth feel of the 4100, or are you going to go for balls to walls, tire shredding, throw you back in your seat, and run from the cops power? csbuckn 11-01-09, 03:41 PM so the 4100 has an aluminum block, right? do they make aluminum heads for it. otherwise a 500 works also sven914 11-01-09, 04:14 PM so the 4100 has an aluminum block, right? do they make aluminum heads for it. otherwise a 500 works also
No they never made any aluminum heads for their aluminum block. But I heard somewhere that they put cast blocks in 85 Seville's, with the 4100. I'm sure thats not true, because then they wouldn't have changed to the 307. jayoldschool 11-01-09, 10:34 PM thats a nice brougham, you should get her an eggcrate grill for christmas.
lol, I like the egg crate, but I will keep hers stock.
Nice car Jay. Do you have a room above your garage or is it just an unnecessarily tall roof?
The ceilings are 16 feet. Think one car on top of another ;)

Is is blue. The lighter blue from the mid-80s. A bit lighter than the dark blue that is in my coupe.

It was funny... she did lots of research (this was before the internet caught on), and found out how many problems there were with the 4100, and how many were replaced under "goodwill" through GM. They told her that it was too old, and long out of warranty, but she still got the engine for cost, and a substantial discount on labour.

To be honest, I hope it doesn't die. When it does (and it will), I will put something else in that has more power. No point in doing all that work for 150hp. sven914 11-01-09, 11:18 PM To be honest, I hope it doesn't die. When it does (and it will), I will put something else in that has more power. Thats true, when my 307 eventually dies, I'm going to rebuild it as a VIN 9. jayoldschool 11-01-09, 11:56 PM thats true, when my 307 eventually dies, i'm going to rebuild it as a 455

I hope it doesn't die either. It's like a running driving memorial to your father. It's nice to keep it as origional as possible. Is it a Jasper reproduction engine? I have read that they fixed a LOT of the HT's problems when they made those. Great example of a fine automobile, Jay! Cadillacboy 11-02-09, 05:21 PM Your ride is just exposing sheer beauty and pure excellent ;) jayoldschool 11-02-09, 09:01 PM I hope it doesn't die either. Thanks. The only mod I have done to it was to put in a CD player for my mother. Easily reversible if needed. The engine is Genuine GM. And, yes, apparently has all the "upgrades" that GM learned about while dealing with so many Hook and Tow 4100s. When she had the engine done, I was under the impression that the engine was brand new, but I have since found the rebuild tag on the side of it with the bearing sizes. sven914 11-03-09, 06:41 PM thats true, when my 307 eventually dies, i'm going to rebuild it as a 455

Fixed That For You?
No... If I was going to go that far out of spec, I would at least go Cadillac.
But anyway, I think we'd all like to see some pictures of that interior. brougham 11-03-09, 06:53 PM That looks like a nice car. Not too many good ones around here anymore. jayoldschool 11-03-09, 06:58 PM Fixed That For You?

ftfy, yes. Good call on the Cad motor. I agree.
