:rant2: Negligently left in the middle of the road while driving past some highway construction, I hit the base part first. Lost my front license plate too. FML....

That's why I have insurance, I'm wondering if they'll cover the cost of replacing the plate(s) though.....

10-31-09, 01:30 AM

You haven't even had it very long!

10-31-09, 01:41 AM
My old STS I hit a damned fox less than a week after I bought it. Three some grand worth of damage later... Sucked.

Around here a replacement plate is $5.

I know.... How do you think I feel? Hopefully in a week it'll be back to 100% again, stopping by the body shop tomorrow morning and then to the police to report a lost plate.......

I think I deserve some kinda compensation from the state for leaving a ****ing cone in the MIDDLE of the road!!

Around here a replacement plate is $10.

Sadly, the possibility of someone using my lost plate exists, so I may have to get a new set which means new registration, and all new plates. I'm gonna keep an eye out for it tomorrow on my way to the police station. If I find it, I'll get out and grab it......

10-31-09, 01:46 AM
Dude, that sucks.

Give your state's DOT a call (unless it was a local municipality doing the work) and they should pay for it. My Mom blew out a tire in a pothole a few years back and the state had to pay for it. My dad also had the windshield on his van busted out by a low hanging parkway tree and the village paid for that.

10-31-09, 01:55 AM
^ They would pay to replace his plates too, if necessary, right?

Lucky for me I'm somewhat tight with the shop foreman for the DOT's garage in that area. I'm gonna make a call sometime this week.

Oh by the way, the wiremesh lower grille survived, I just took it off and put it in the trunk so it wouldn't get lost. For the most part I'll need a plate mount, and probably a front bumper cover. I already filed the claim through insurance like 20 minutes after it happened and mentioned the lost plate. They might pick up the tab on that if there is one, but I am most likely gonna be out $500 for the deductable.....

Wow that's unfortunate. Surprising amount of damage if you ask me. A few months ago I ran over a fresh deer corpse late one night at 70mph.. It made a lot of noise and I was certain the bottom half of my bumper would be cracked. Everything was okay though.. except for the plastic trim underneath was dragging.. and lots of deer guts everywhere.

10-31-09, 11:55 AM

Sucks to see man, but sounds like you'll get it fixed right.

10-31-09, 12:01 PM
I would definitely file a claim with whatever agency was working out there.

10-31-09, 01:36 PM
my uncle was driving thru town one day when a few rocks hit his car. he got pissed. turns out it had been thrown from a lawnmower, which luckily, happened to be operated by the town groundskeeper.
the town cut him a check for a new paintjob...

maybe whatever agency left that cone there will cover your deductible if nothing else.

if course its considered a collision claim and will go against youre record if your ins company pays for it, so id go after them for the whole amount

11-01-09, 04:25 PM
Dope, I didn't even know you had a new ride.

Congrats and I'm sorry to see the damage.

That blows man!Did you grab the cone to see whos it was? They are always wrote on,I used to be a collector in my younger years.

Well time to update.....

I found my plate, and the mount, but I turned the plates in since the front was so mangled, I didn't wanna put it back on the car. $6 later I've got new plates with a new number and a new registration. Looks like ZEJ-34U wasn't such a lucky number.....

I reattached the plate backing and put the new plate on the front of the car so I don't get stopped. Got the estimate today from the body shop, $1,702.25, glad I've got insurance. Dropping it off today and hopefully I'll get my STS back by the end of the week. The shop is pretty cool, kinda tight with the owners and I used to hang out there when I ran parts for AutoZone. I'm getting some cool pinstriping on my deck lid too for a measly $30 extra, glad they're handling this instead of the place the insurance company told me to go to.....

Pics when it's back.....

That sucks, Dope, but I'm glad the damage wasn't worse. Hope your contact at the DOT can point you in the right direction for filing a claim. In some states, the name of the contractor doing the road work will be posted at the beginning of the construction zone, so that may be a lead for you as well.

I just had Sabrina's front bumper repainted after some serious bug debris ended up flecking some of the paint off when the car wash was scrubbing it off:

I wasn't sure if I could get my comprehensive coverage to pay for it, but after getting pictures from the adjuster and the body shop, State Farm agreed to cover it. I had to pay a $250 deductible on what was a $600 repair (but it was worth it; it also good rid of all the small chips accumulated over eight years).

But it looks like your bumper cover is actually damaged beyond the paint, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're replacing the entire bumper cover. It really sucks when your new car gets damaged so soon, but at least it's not major and you'll get it back soon.

It definately does, I'm already feeling what it's like to go from a car like an STS, back to a 98 Buick for a week. Haha. Good news though, my '89 Fleetwood Brougham which has been down for a bad misfire since late July will be coming back soon, and firing on all eight. God I miss that car.....

11-04-09, 03:06 AM
Sorry to hear about your unfelicitous encounter with the traffic cone. Here's hoping your STS will be picture-perfect in short order. Getting the '89 back will make for double happiness! :)

You have no idea how heartbroken I am that my precious Fleetwood Brougham hasn't touched pavement in 3 and a half months. The STS is an awesome car but can't get anywhere near the place my heart has for my "Caddi." :(

11-04-09, 05:28 PM
Let's hope you can get the cone owner's company to pay your insurance company. Otherwise at your age you'll be paying your insurance company backin higher premiums for several years to come. My wife's 2002 SLS was rear ended a couple of weeks ago, and while the damage didn't get into the body proper, damage to the bumper and tailpipe tips and backup sensors still came to over $2400.

11-07-09, 11:43 PM
I'd say call the construction company that was working out there, because they are liable for that stuff. I work construction and kinda am figuring out how the system works. If they don't take responsibility, their contracted traffic safety company is then on the hook. Either way, you shouldn't have to make a claim on your insurance.

11-07-09, 11:46 PM
Oh by the way, usually if the cones/signage is contracted to another company, they have their logos/info plastered all over each cone and on the back of each sign.

Thanks. It was a "Parting Gift" from AutoZone. Hahaha.... They took care of me there with the bodywork and the pinstriping. I'm gonna bring them my Fleetwood in the spring and have a few paint imperfections fixed, and some equally as sexy pinstriping done. Gonna have that tape shit taken off and do it the right way.....

A good body shop is a nice thing to have. Glad it worked out well for you.
