View Full Version : Pitting chrome rims ChrisHall 10-30-09, 11:21 AM Car cost $91,000, is less than 2 years old, has 38,000 km on it and rims look like sh!t. Where is the "New" GM when you want them. Started trying to get action 6 months ago and 10,000 km ago and still no action. Sales Manager is doing his best, it's the next level up where the problem lies.
Does anyone else have a problem with their chrome rims like this. :banghead:
Chris Wow! You think salt did that? ChrisHall 10-30-09, 12:01 PM i'm a snow bird, so I think not unless it's the salt in Florida.
Chris STE_6000 10-30-09, 12:13 PM how are u cleaning them? i would be using chrome care products on a bi-weekly bases Of course, there IS a salt component to Florida if you're on one of the coasts....
A couple of times a year I put Carnuba Wax (Griots has a deodorant like "stick" of it) on All my chrome (and I Do drive on salted roads). JD Dearden 10-30-09, 01:21 PM Go get some steel wool just make sure its the 0000 stuff the zero's measure how fine it is. You can get it at Home Depot or somewhere like that, it works really really well to take those off. JD Dearden 10-30-09, 01:24 PM Just dont use it on your paint only chrome or plastic chrome. dkozloski 10-31-09, 08:33 PM Chrome plate on aluminum is doomed from the start. The aluminum is soft and dents under the chrome even from pebbles and stones. turnerbend 10-31-09, 09:33 PM Car cost $91,000, is less than 2 years old, has 38,000 km on it and rims look like sh!t. Chris
Pictures taken in 2003 what year is your car? ChrisHall 11-02-09, 09:13 AM Opps. Camera date is wrong. Car is a 2008, purchased Oct 1, 2008 and now has 38,000 km on it. Pictures were taken the day the post started. Greg00coupe 11-02-09, 12:58 PM Has to be a defect. I bought aftermarket chrome rims and they rusted the first time out in salt. They were replaced under warranty and the new rims I've had for 8 years w/o a problem. So factory or quality aftermarket should not pit under normal conditions and care. STE_6000 11-02-09, 03:18 PM not sure if this was dont, but dont wash ur rims with Windex. not sure why my friend did that, i told him not to. anyway it pitted after that winter, and he never drove it in the winter. I used windex on my windows and they shattered???? STE_6000 11-02-09, 03:59 PM I used windex on my windows and they shattered????
seriously? how unlucky. but i can honestly say there is no protective restoring chemicals in window cleaner. KARL DAHLEN 11-02-09, 04:23 PM Try a product called "wheel wax" Not sure it will help you but sure does well on my OEM polished aluminum wheels. Maybe worth a try. ChrisHall 11-17-09, 08:54 AM Update:
Sales Manager called me yesterday and new set of rims are on the way. Warranty! :)
Chris pjbizjak 11-17-09, 07:35 PM Are the rims 'polished' or 'chrome'. Do not use any cleaners with ammonia in it. If the rims are the 'polished' type do not use any abrasive cleaners on them, you'll remove the clear coating. Just use and 'all type wheel' cleaner and then a good polish.
