View Full Version : Opera light lens removal -- how to(?) Warren_R 10-29-09, 04:37 PM Has anyone found a technique for removing the opera lamp lens without having to break or cut it? After considerable searching, I finally located a source of EL strips. My idea here is to simply remove the old strip & replace with a new one.
Ideas, anecdotes, & suggestions are welcomed :) jayoldschool 10-29-09, 07:04 PM The opera lamp mounting is inside. You have to take off the window trim and sail panel to get to the nuts.
Keep us posted! I actually don't even know if mine work or not... tbcaddy18 10-29-09, 07:18 PM does anyone know where the power converter/adapter is located for the opera lamps?..I read somewhere that it's located in the trunk behind one of the panels? Warren_R 10-30-09, 03:54 AM I'm ordering the strip in next day or so, will be sure to keep y'all posted on events ... crossing my fingers they'll be favorable ones =)
TBS -- the converter is in the trunk on driver's side, about halfway up the side & close to the wheel well ... the '86 FWB should have it in the same place mjs182004 10-30-09, 12:11 PM I just replaced mine. very easy. take off the b pillar molding. i think there is 4 or 5 screws. then you will see the nuts inside of the b pillar. there should be 4 of them. 2 for the chrome housing and 2 for the opera lens. Warren_R 11-01-09, 05:15 AM Is the molding that you mentioned the chromed part on the outside? There's also a plastic thingy inside with some screws holding it to the inside of B-pillar. Aron9000 11-01-09, 06:03 AM I just replaced mine. very easy. take off the b pillar molding. i think there is 4 or 5 screws. then you will see the nuts inside of the b pillar. there should be 4 of them. 2 for the chrome housing and 2 for the opera lens.
The opera lamps are signifcatly different between a 1989 and 1990. The redesigned that whole B-pillar light/trim. mrtalkradio 11-07-09, 07:18 PM If you have tried everything and notice your opera lights don't work. Use the courtesy light switch located where you pull the lights on. They only work if you turn that bevel on. dirt_cheap_fleetwood 11-08-09, 02:23 AM ^ Huh? The exterior opera lights work whenever the headlights or parking lights are on. 1964CoupeDeville 11-08-09, 03:24 AM You're better off just letting them break then taking them out. It's what I did with my 1964 Cadillac Coupe Deville. Warren_R 11-08-09, 04:10 AM Hmmmm. It just occurred to me, might be able to scrounge an old pair from the wreckers. Nothing like a dissection to learn anatomy & possible surgical techniques! mrtalkradio 11-08-09, 06:59 AM ^ Huh? The exterior opera lights work whenever the headlights or parking lights are on.
I have a 92 Brougham. For months and months I tried to figure out how to get the outside opera lights to work. These are the ones on the outside of the car, between the doors. I found an old post on here from 2003, that said to make sure the Twilight Sentinel switch was on. That is the dial that is on the headlight pull switch. You turn it to the left to adjust how long the lights stay on after you sut the car off, and they come on when the sensor detects low light. Anyway I did that, looked outside and Yup they work. I'm just saying try that before going through the rest of it. I almost bought 2 new ones my self!
Don't expect bright lights, they aren't dirt_cheap_fleetwood 11-08-09, 12:27 PM Mine work even if I turn the lights on manually and have the twilight sentinel off. They also worked that way on my old '88 FWD Fleetwood. brougham 11-08-09, 02:29 PM You're better off just letting them break then taking them out. His are completely different then what your 1964 has. Slacker 11-09-09, 02:59 PM Anyone have any idea how to change the bulb of an opera light on an '82 deville? Mine is out on one side. I tried removing the cloth "wall" on the inside back seat but the other side of that just has some sort of sticky black foam thing that doesn't really come out... |
