Yesterday I wanted to go to a service for a relative’s sweet little 12 year old daughter that died last week from the H1N1 virus. Since the chapel was located several suburbs away I tried to program the location into my 2008 STS NAV system. The phone number did not work so I tried putting in the address. Entering the “House Number” was no problem but when I tried to enter the “Street”, all I could find were alpha characters on the touch screen and no numbers so the system wouldn’t accept any variation of 73rd St. that I could think of. After messing with it for several minutes I gave up, hit the Interstate and found the chapel without any problem.

Today I looked in the 5/16” thick NAV manual and could only find instructions for entering alpha street names. I really don’t want to plow through the whole manual nor do I want to spend half an hour trying to get help from the 800 number so does anyone know how to enter numbered street names into the NAV? Do I have to spell out "Seventy Third Street"?

I can't remember the button but I think it might be Sym for symbols. I know there's a way to get there :)

I'll post again if noone else does.

Hello,

Sorry for your loss.

I too have a 2008 STS with factory Nav. I find it is only accurate about 80% of the time. The 20% it takes me 1 or 2 miles away and annouces I have arrived at my destination. I have the latest firmware. Just wondering if yours gets you to where your going most of the time.

Thanks,

Pete

No you can enter numbers I think you have to push the symbols key then a keypad comes up. Ill look at my nav when I get in my car later and post how to do it

Thanks for the information guys. You are correct, the numbers are in the Symbols file. I'm not sure how Symbols and Numbers are related but I'm getting old and my brain hurts.

One trick I found while I was messing with it yesterday is to enter the City first. Then when you enter the first couple of numbers into the Street file it will display all of the related street numbers in that city including N, S, St., Ave., Etc. Then you can just click on the right one.

Pete - In answer to your question, I have the same problem. About 20%?? of the time, it will direct me to a location several blocks from the actual place. It seems more prevalent with Addresses than when I can use the telephone number. Of course the street addresses in the suburbs of Chicago are pretty well screwed up to begin with which may be the problem.

I got lost in a bad way a couple months back going from Logan airport to a DoubleTree hotel on Mt Vernon Ave Boston which according to Google is like 6mi away. Well I found two Mt Vernon Ave's in Boston. I picked one then the other, they were the same place. So I started out. Mind you I live and work in the Boston area. I just wasn't aware of this location. It told me it was like 10mi away but I didn't think much of it and went along for the ride. It took me into some of the worst areas of Boston I have ever seen. There were Cadillacs allright but older DeVilles and older El Dorados if you know what I mean. It was 1am. I used my Blackberry for directions and made it there about an hour later. Ugh... other then that episode, I find it to be fairly accurate. I have the 2008 version of the streets disk.

Atmospherics and sunspot activity have a noticable effect on GPS accuracy. The difference in signal propogation from day to night is also apparent.
