Northern SRX 10-27-09, 10:34 AM For those who have switched to four same size tires, have you noticed any change in handling, ride or tire wear? I have stuck with the staggered set-up but have read oodles of threads right here on this subject and absolutely nobody who has switched to same size all around has reported any truly notable difference and expressed any regret. I would suggest searching this forum for "tires" or "staggered". lionsfan54 10-27-09, 12:07 PM Seeing as how the factory tire size for the sport package was the same all around, I would think you'll be fine lionsfan54 10-27-09, 12:10 PM The factory tire size on the sport package was the same all around, so you should be fine robhersch 10-27-09, 11:50 PM For those who have switched to four same size tires, have you noticed any change in handling, ride or tire wear? We "rotated" F235s & R255s for a few K-miles to check them out since the Pilot 235s seemed to wear much quicker than the Pilot 255s; and we decided to go with all 4 255s, but none of the "conventional tire stores" would install 4 255s. After searching around, we found one who said they would put 4 of either size on for us; they did, and they strongly suggested a 4 wheel alignment to ensure no adverse wear due to alignment. They did and we did; all 4 255s. We have observed no noticable change in driving or handling, but much less apparent tire wear with 255s on front. We chose Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus, and we are very pleased. Good luck with yours. Professor Wizard 10-28-09, 10:51 AM That is weird... I have the Sport Package, and I have narrower tires in the front. Maybe you are speaking of the Sport Package on an N* SRX (I have the V6). I'm an old car guy that has been around the block a few times... I can't think of a single thing about the SRX that would require staggered tires, nor that would change enough to notice, by going with same size tires. You will ever so slightly lose some gas mileage by going wider on the front because of increased friction and headwind pressure, but you should improve some handling for turning, at the same time (More Rubber on the Road.) 4WD versions would gain traction with wider front tires. So in the SRX case, we would overall, be better off with same size tires! Every now and then GM does something that doesn't make a lot of sense - - Staggering the sizes on an SRX is one of them! This is NOT a Corvette, and it will not drive like one! gwcpa 10-29-09, 04:46 PM I have a rwd sport with a staggered setup as well. Front tires are starting to wear on the inside, 28K. Will replace with 255's when they need it. I think the only SRX sports without the stagger are the sports with 20's. Caper10 11-02-09, 03:27 PM Last winter I put 4 235 Winter tires on my SRX4, I did notice a little more sway in the rear. But the traction in snow and slush was so much better than the all seasons. david1 11-03-09, 09:31 AM I wonder if the 255's are for the added weight of 3rd row and or cargo ? robhersch 11-06-09, 02:14 AM I wonder if the 255's are for the added weight of 3rd row and or cargo ? Our assumption was: 235x60-18 are about right for the car; ....but in 2003/2004, the SRX was a "performance utility" with 0-60 ~ 6 sec, and GM put 255x55-18 on rear to give a bit less sway due to narrower side walls and a bit more bite on WOT starts. Note the circumference of both sizes are the same. An opinion only, no facts to support the thought. According to an article I read many years back, Cadillac engineers ran a number of simulations and landed on a staggered set-up to give a balance of acceleration and handling they were looking for. IIRC, the reason for the selected staggered set-up was to put the wider tire in the back where it provided better traction and leave the (still ample but) narrower tire up front where the somewhat lower resistance would provide slightly lighter steering and (very slightly) better fuel economy. YMMV conedoctor 11-06-09, 12:14 PM Looks as well maybe? In an open diff car like this as long as you get the front and rear OD close you are fine, again ckeck your spare that is not even close to the same and it is not unsafe to run for like 3000k. I don't mind the staggered look as it make the rear look that much bigger, I use 255 all around and have had no issues. 99% of SRX drivers will never find the limits of the tires and I can't see a huge gain in mileage from a wider front tire so run whatever you want, if I wear out the tires I have now I will go as big as I can in the rear for looks. TTopJohn 11-06-09, 07:26 PM There's some confusion in this thread between the "sport" package and the "performance" or "luxury performance" package. The "sport" package is the one on later SRXs that has the specific front and rear fascia - it included 255s all around. The performance and luxury performance packages included things like magnetic ride shocks but did not have any of this different bodywork - and they kept the 235 front 255 rear setup. Our 06 Northstar is like this. cfishkin 11-09-09, 11:09 PM I went with 4 RSA 235's all around due to cost. No issues whatsoever. david1 11-10-09, 10:57 AM I went with 4 RSA 235's all around due to cost. No issues whatsoever. How many miles ago ??? I don't buy the traction deal, b/c the AWD's are staggered. cfishkin 11-12-09, 11:34 PM 10,000 so far. Tom Wheeler 11-14-09, 12:31 AM I have 255x50x20 Toyo Proxy S/T's on all four of my AWD 07 and just yesterday I passed 50,000 miles on them. I just went out and measured the tread depth and I have the same 9/32" front and rear. Could not be any happier with these tires and have run them all year here just north of Detroit. Tom | |
