View Full Version : '05 STS DVD/NAV addition chris.mason1 10-22-09, 11:01 PM I want to add the stock DVD/NAV system to my 05 STS that currently doesn't have one. My only questions are is the wiring harnesses the same? and is the 05-06 DVD/NAV the only one that fits. I have found a few used ones from cars that were totaled out by insurance and are still working but don't want to have any issues with the wiring if I purchase. Thanks in advance for all replies and help with my situation nguyendot 10-24-09, 06:45 PM Easiest way? Buy the car with it. You're going to have a headache trying to get it to work, and spend a LOT of time and money. snum1fan 10-24-09, 06:54 PM Nguyendot you are completely wrong. It's been discussed on here alot in the past few weeks. That's why it's in the FAQ now. People just saying no it won't work cause they heard it from somebody is the reason it took so long for someone to try it.
Look in the FAQ.
You can do it easily and it is all explained in the FAQ. Nothing hard about it. Only thing you won't have is voice recognition. And you'll have to find a 10 pin connector if you want A/V inputs. snum1fan 10-24-09, 07:58 PM Here is the link to the most recent discussion and the one that was placed in the FAQ.

From seeing people ask on here and me and the other people I know who have done it, all the dealers that were asked and everyone on here all say "its easier to just buy a STS with a NAV". Even though my local dealer will install a NAV in Escallades and even though it has been done by SOOO many people in the CTS forum for some reason no one thought it could be done on the STS.
I really dont know why.
If you look at the pin outs (which you would think would be the first thing you would do if seeing if this is possible) you will see that the non NAV STS has two harnesses and the NAV equipped STS has four. Then you would see that the two harnesses that the NAV equipped and non NAV equipped share are the EXACT same. So then you look at the two harnesses that the non NAV equipped STS doesn't have and you see that there is nothing really important in them.
All you need to do the conversion is a NAV unit (05-06 for an 05 STS) and a GPS antenna (one with pink connector). After that you just plug the NAV in and mount your antenna (see FAQ).
After that you will have everything a NAV equipped STS has except voice recognition and A/V inputs.
If you want A/V inputs you need a 10 pin connector and the actual input module. When you buy your NAV try to get one that has all the connectors still in it with the wires cut. Both Ebay and junk yard sell them that way. Then you can use the connector to hook up your inputs.
The VR doesn't really work that great anyways and from what people say on here I dont think too many people use it regularly.
I have also installed the lockpick and it works great. andrewt57 10-24-09, 08:30 PM i just completed the install on a 2006 and just recieved my antenna from the g m parts store. It really andrewt57 10-24-09, 08:37 PM snum is totally accurate all you have to do is plug in the first two harnesses and the unit works. all of the functions including the car options function as factory equipment. the olnly issue that does not work is the bluetooth becasue and the on star becasue the orginal wiring of the factory radio does not have this wiring for factory equipment. thank you snum1 i am elated now that i have a nav unit in my sts.. the car now has become the ultimate driving machine. chris.mason1 10-27-09, 01:57 AM So the microphone for the OnStar phone won't work for the bluetooth mic?? Is there a way to add the mic so you can have voice recognition?? snum1fan 10-27-09, 02:58 AM I am pretty sure that I have the Onstar figured out. It has been done in the CTS forum. As for the VR I think it is more than just hooking up the microphone. I may be wrong I haven't really looked into the VR part of it much yet because I am not too sure its worth the time. I dont think too many people use it regularly. Dial Name is very useful if you record Nametags. Since they are in your own voice they work reliably even with this older technology. nguyendot 10-29-09, 09:26 PM Nguyendot you are completely wrong. You'll also be missing half of the speakers. The nav comes with a 15 speaker system. The sound modes won't work correctly (but they'll work). snum1fan 10-29-09, 10:30 PM The nav equipped sts comes with 15 speakers so unless you have a 15 speaker sts without nav you won't be missing anything. chicagoswagger 11-06-09, 06:07 PM First of all you all need to lighten up. Second of all it's not copy infringment if he owned the disc at one time. Backup of owned material is legal. Lastly who gives a F, he spent $$$big$$$ on the frigin car and you want him to buy a disc?!?!?!!??! GM has bigger problems to worry about than a damn disc being copied. quit acting like snobby bitches. cremecreme 11-11-09, 02:37 PM I have hooked up the Navigation and everything works.....I cannot get a GPS signal to come up...I have drove around, even with the GPS antenna taying on the dash and still nothing??? Any recommendations? Do I have a bad GPS antenna? This was the original OEM GPS antenna that came with the Navi unit when I ordered it and recieved it. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!! hazcaddy 11-11-09, 06:20 PM Stepping back a few paces - why would anyone want to go through this hassle?
Garmin sells some mighty fine units at reasonable prices, plus you can take those with you when you fly somewhere and get a rental... cremecreme 11-11-09, 09:20 PM Well i have to be honest, i believe the investment is well worth it....I paid a total of $350 for a brand new looking Caddilac Navi...and it looks great in the dash, nice and clean...i just didnt want no garmin or whatever sticking out the window...plus i can watch DVD's on my Cadillac and now have the six disc changer....so that is a no brainer for that small investment....compared to the STS grill costing over $500 now that my friends is a BAAAD investment...but nothing we can do about it... |
