View Full Version : Transmission Failure- No warning lights- 04 SRX mhousealum 10-21-09, 02:14 PM Over the last few days, I had noticed a slight shudder around 45-55 mph (roughly third gear). I put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank thinking that may be the problem. Problem persisted so I called my "off dealer" Cadillac mechanic to schedule an appoint. He scheduled me for tomorrow, 10/22/09. This morning, I got on 285 (Atlanta) and as I merged onto the freeway, the tachometer was stuck at 4 for about 10 seconds before dropping back down. It was morning rush hour and the traffic slowed and then picked backed up. As I tried to accelerate, it just revved but didn't go forward. I got in the small emergency lane next to the fast lane barely. A HERO truck came, blocked all lanes, and pushed me over to the wider emergency lane (now have a 4 inch scratch there). The car has been towed to the repair shop. My understanding was these transmissions were pretty good. I only have 95k on the car. There were no warning lights or error message on the onboard computer. Given that there was a slight shudder over the last few days, could there be any other cause but the transmission? I hope to God it's not the whole tranny. BTW, I had a trans flush about 25k ago. maybe the fluid level was low. mhousealum 10-21-09, 04:05 PM Wouldn't there be a sensor for low fluid level? Wouldn't there be a sensor for low fluid level?
not for the transmission, only coolant, engine oil (2005 and older vehicule if I remember correctly), w/washer and brake fluid. mhousealum 10-22-09, 04:42 PM Mechanic called this morning. Complete transmission failure. Certified trans would be $3,700 out the door and rebuilt would be $2,600 out the door. I'm getting the rebuilt and then selling it. I'm extremely disappointed in a trasmission failure before 100k. I've had all the services done including transmission flush. Looks like I'm heading back to the imports. conedoctor 10-22-09, 07:07 PM Dude come on give me a break, cause no import trans never died under 100k.
Your mad and that is fine I understand but lets not paint domestic with such a big brush, failures happen to them all but when it does happen to an import it just costs more to fix.
What import did you want to back to, Korea, Japan or Germany? mhousealum 10-23-09, 02:34 AM Give you a break, hunh? I need the break....GM has come out with a drive it for 60 days and if you don't like it bring it back campaign. Hyundai has a 10 year/100K warranty. Which is better....10 years or 2 months? The caddy was the longest I've owned a car in the last 10 years (5 years) and I love it. I could see if I had skipped some of the maintenance or dogged the car out. Just the opposite. A trans failure under 100k is just flat out unacceptable. conedoctor 10-23-09, 11:24 AM Agred that is a crappy deal to have a tranny fail.
Good luck with whatever you buy, hope it lasts forever. the SRX transmission is made in France. Good luck finding an import made of only non-US parts....Im sorry that your SRX has dissapointed though. dctex99 10-23-09, 05:22 PM Please make an effort to find out WHY your trans failed. Try to talk to the mechanic and see if he has any ideas; it would surely help others down the road; personally, I worry about trans flushing! I think it stirs up up anythiing that might be loose aluminum deposits in the trans housing from breaking in or use; and making them available to the pumps if they don't happen to be flushed out.
I just checked Truedelta for info on 04 SRX trans; someone had a complete failure in GA; 51,000 miles, cost him $2800 to have it rebuilt by the dealer.... I wonder if this is related to the transmission shudders in 35-45 MPH range that folks have discussed here. My 06 V6 RWD SRX had that shudder that started at about 45K miles. Others have reported it to be diagnosed as a torque converter problem. mhousealum 10-24-09, 08:28 PM Interesting theory...the torque converter and transmission obviously are connected. My mechanic loaned me a 1992 Caddy STS to use while we wait on the new trans to come from out of state. This car has 187K miles on it and is still riding good. I guess it's just hit or miss. dctex99 10-26-09, 09:30 PM Wow, a 1992 Loaner car; that is interesting.....most dealers loan something very new, and covered by warranty in case something happens to it! raysirx 10-27-09, 10:08 AM Maybe you should buy a BMW 3 or 5/ X5 series they use the same trans made by opel in France.
:shhh:
BMW calls it the AS5 360R
GM calls it the 4l40e / 5l40E
http://www.amtrans.nl/5L40E.pdf raysirx, interesting! I find it a little odd that a small BMW 3series would have the same autotranny as the SRX (?) I guess it must be a good transmission... Kauai 1 10-30-09, 05:00 PM Like others, I suspect that your problem was caused by the transmission "flush." Who performed it? Was Dexron VI fluid used to refill the trans? (It is a MUST!)
Many trans experts do not recommend flushes for a number of reasons. And, if the wrong fluid was used, problems would arise.
What is your "total failure?" If I were told that, I certainly would ask lots of questions, and get other, outside opinions. And, is your mechanic doing the rebuild the same one who did the flush?
I smell a rat...............sorry! Good luck! My friend had a Rolls with 55k on it, trans went, I think it's just the luck of the draw, he would have loved to have a 3,000 dollar bill for a trans, | |
