Aron9000 10-18-09, 02:40 AM Timing chains last the life of the car. revdowrong 10-18-09, 03:29 AM If your car takes awhile to start, it might be time to change it. Better yet when your water pump goes out change it. The timing chain is located behind the water pump and the timing cover. You'll notice a big difference when you go to start your car. No more long starts. mike93 10-18-09, 12:00 PM nah she don't take long to start but im gonna change it when the water pump goes Ranger 10-18-09, 01:39 PM I traded my '92 with 125K and it was never changed. submariner409 10-18-09, 01:58 PM The timing chain on a 1993 4.9 is a standard run-of-the-mill cog link chain and gearset. It will probably last until well after we're all gone. The run between crank and cam gear is so short that practically any amount of stretch (there ain't much) will make NO difference in timing. Most factory and stock replacement cams are machined with a degree or two of advance built in to compensate for any chain stretch. You replace the whole gearset, not just the chain. The crank sprocket is the first to wear, and in my Olds 455's they last past 5,000 boat engine hours - 300,000 mile equivalent. HUF 10-18-09, 03:01 PM I have been a member of this and other forums for some eight years and NEVER heard of anybody who had to change the timing chain on 4.9 engine. mike93 10-18-09, 03:43 PM ok thanks everyone Ranger 10-18-09, 06:10 PM I have been a member of this and other forums for some eight years and NEVER heard of anybody who had to change the timing chain on 4.9 engine. Likewise. drewsdeville 10-18-09, 11:13 PM Within the last 2 years, I've had the timing covers off on my 4.5 and 4.9 (I always replace the timing cover and water inlet when doing a 4.X water pump. Ensures lifetime job with no do-overs, in my experience) Anyway, the timing chains on my cars looked like brand new at 170,000 miles. Not much slack at all. I wouldn't worry about it. revdowrong 10-19-09, 12:57 AM I agree with Drewsdeville, If the water pump goes out change the timing chain and sprockets. The first time I changed the timing chain it had massive amount of slack on one side. Which cause my car to take awhile to start. This was changed in 1999 with 140,000 miles when the water pump went out. Then I changed it in 2009 when the water pump went out again. That time it had very little slack but I wanted to be on the safe side. After I did that I replaced the timing cover as well because of broken studs for the water pump. mike93 10-19-09, 11:18 PM Ok whe it goes and im going to school to be a mechanic HUF 10-19-09, 11:30 PM I agree with Drewsdeville, If the water pump goes out change the timing chain and sprockets. That is NOT what he suggested. mike93 10-19-09, 11:36 PM He did not suggest what HUF? HUF 10-19-09, 11:55 PM He did not suggest what HUF? No, he mentioned only the cover, not the chain itself. Big difference! :) mike93 10-20-09, 12:06 AM oh ok thanks guys | |
