View Full Version : Preventive maintenance ('90 with 28k miles) Notaguru 10-11-09, 01:59 AM I bought this 1990 Deville early this year with 21k and now it has about 28k.
I replaced the gold stripe tires and front struts, installed a Bluetooth radio and a GPS, kick-started a reluctant window motor, installed an alarm with remote entry, changed the oil and the trans fluid, flushed the cooling system (with tabs), replaced the serpentine belt, and right now it's like new. No leaks, noises, faltering, codes, or other problems. There is no rust anywhere, the body and paint are perfect, and the interior looks a year old.
What else can I do to keep it that way? I'd like this car to outlast me... drewsdeville 10-11-09, 12:08 PM pics???
Looks like you have it all covered.
The best thing you can do for any car is keep it on a precise maintenance schedule, changing fluids and tune-up items when it's time. You might want to change out some of those tune-up items now so you can get yourself a baseline for the next tune-up, replacing the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, pcv valve, fuel filter. After all, they are all 20 years old now, if they are original.
Have fun and enjoy your ride. You did not bleed the brakes?!!! How could you miss that one?!!! :D Just kidding. I am sure there was nothing wrong with most of items you have replaced. Struts at 21,000 miles. ATF at 21,000 miles... Serpentine belt at 21.000 miles...Jeez!
These cars are rustproof. I would not bother about anything except the coolant and motor oil changes. In my humble opinion, tuning up a perfectly tuned engine means nothing but possible troubles. Notaguru 10-11-09, 12:36 PM I posted pictures after buying the car, but couldn't find them, so here are some of them again. (I've since turned the mat around). This car was 90% when I got it, and is 95% now.
And yes, I replaced the brake fluid, installed new pads up front, turned the disks, and aligned it (three times).
Is it appropriate to go through the car re-torquing everything? I have access to a lift and every tool known to man. Dave S Texas 10-12-09, 10:37 AM Nice ride. With a lift you can do anything. I'd keep it garaged when not in use. What size tires/rims? I'm thinking of replacing the wire covers and going with similar to yours. Notaguru 10-12-09, 10:50 AM This daily driver is in my garage at home and in a parking garage at work. It's averaged less than 1,000 miles per month, so it's not in the sun very much.
I had it in the air last week, and once again could not find any rust at all. I have a rustproofing kit left over from my Mustang days, but in this S California climate there's no need.
The tires are stock 15", and the wheel covers are original. Coincidentally, I've been thinking about wire covers, so if you want to swap let me know.
Back to topic, I plan to do a 75 shot, wet. It looks like all the new plumbing can be made to disappear, so the engine will always look stock.
