I was disturbed today to look at my dash. The Section where the cd's are inserted. what looked like an easily whipped off smudge, turned out to be a place where the rubberised coating was coming off. I only have 2500 miles on it! Any one else have this happening?

Thanks,

Evan

Yes, the coating where my knee acassionally touches the dash has peeled. I'm becoming a little disappoined in the quality of this car. 5000 miles on the car

Wonder if there isn't some way of consolidating all of the manufacturing and design quality issues and somehow forwarding them to the SRX program manager. John Caddy had mentioned this the other day and I think it would be a good idea.

I hav ethe same problem. I Nfact, I have been meaning to post the pictures but keep forgetting to transfer the files off of the camera.

I'm taking it to the dealer and see what they say. This is unacceptable for a $50k car.

Same thing here.

Is there an after-market wooden dash for the non-navi versions anywhere?

This black plastic is actually polished. And it peels easily.

The same rubber dash material seems to be on the steering wheel spokes.

I wonder how long it will hold up

I was wondering about that myself. I think the steering wheel spokes are plastic. But doubt that the color is embedded. They probably pulled cruise control off of the wheel as they knew too much switch usage would cause paint peel (bit of humor there)

dealer ordered new dash trim for the peeling part (warranty).

My Nav equipped 04 SRX is 7 months old, and I now have peeling rubber on the panel where you insert a CD into the player. Has anyone had this successfully resolved? If so, how?

Dealer saw peeling CD panels and said he would order a new faceplate. Has anyone had theirs replaced. Is there any peeling evident on the new facepate? Thanks.

Had pealing problem on CD panel. Dealer replaced part under waranty. Loaner car SRX had material pealing, (flaking) from door handles. Supposedly replacement part has had problem corrected. Service tech said they are seeing a lot of this. I am watching other rubber covered parts and expect to have same problem, will stay on top of problems with dealer.

I wonder if they use this material in other models, or just the SRX. I find it hard to believe that this material hasn't been subject to some durability testing, or is this just a problem with some vehicles a bad mix of the plastic or such.

Dash ok so far (6k mi) but after a car wash; detergent or wax dripped on my drivers inside dark brown door panel insert when I later opened the door.
Didn't notice it until it dried in a white streak.
When I used plain water and a towel to remove the streak the brown panel lightened up like I had used a paint remover where the detergent/wax had dried. Have yet to inform the dealer.
Anyone else on this issue?

The BMW X5 was notorious for having this same rubbery coating come off the door handles, and many BMW's are afflicted by this on the cupholder area. I really do not know why the automotive industry continues to use it, my Lexus has it on the steering wheel buttons but it hasnt peeled off yet.

Try lighting rubbing a mild ammonia on this - any floor stripper should do it if that's what you have. I doubt if Windex would be strong enough - its concentration of ammonia is probably too weak to work on a vertical surface.

All this tells me is that the panel is probably real wood veneer and the water somehow permeated the surface finish. This is quite a normal property of finished wood and the only way it could be totally prevented is if you used multiple coats of spar varnish (such as what they use on those antique mahogany boats) and you take care to never nick the finish surface.

Good luck - let me know if the ammonia works.

The amazing thig about most of the synthetic rubber materials is that they are almost impossible to glue to anything. I can't think of a material that would be much more inapproprite for automotive interiors.

so... does anybody have a PART # for the replacement of this piece? My car is out of warranty and I need to replace it.
