I have a 2004 SRX that is starting to give my wife and I some trouble. The problem now is the key will not turn back to be removed, like as if it were still in gear. I can assure you that it is in park. So I read the manual on how to remove the key with tools, but I want to fix this problem the right way. And since it is my wife's car, I need to fix it right and now. The car has actually been real good to us and has only let us down about a month ago with a dead battery. Since the new battery install, the key problem was occasional but has now become every time we use it. When it happened before, with a few tries it would come out but now it will never come out of the ignition. Right now I'm wondering if it has something to do with the new battery or if it is a switch on the shifter itself. Has anyone had this problem before ? Can someone please help me ?
Thanks Dan.

I had the problem once. Never figured out what caused it and it never happened again after the battery disco/reco.
Luck!

I have checked this thread and tried several of the options with no luck. I have been through all of the fuse blocks, have tried diconnecting the battery and also tried adjusting the shifting linkage. For some reason the car thinks that something is wrong and the key should not come out. As a temporary fix, so the wife can get to work, I threaded a bolt up in the release hole. I know, not good, but works for now. Is there any chance my $140 Autozone replacement battery would have something to do with this ? My parents had a similar problem with their cadillac car, only their car would not start.
Just thinking out loud.
Thanks.

if you are in doubt over the battery, why don't you just swap with a known good replacement? Good luck
