Can this engine be removed from the topside and teh transmission left in place.

ie....Pull it out from the top and then drop another one right back in?

I believe you can do it that way. You need a factory manual to help get all the "stuff" disconnected. I've had the FWD engine out of my '85 Fleetwood twice.

My manual has a step-by-step list to remove the engine, 51 items in the list.

It's not too difficult, but it does look that way. FSM is needed like Bill said. I suggest you take plenty of close-up photos. Label everything you disconnect. Torque every bolt to correct spec when you reinstall. Lotsa different size/lengths of bolts to put back, so organize them. Take the hood off or disconnect the struts to get it almost vertical.
