No oil light sometime I smell somethin burnin look under the hood nothing. I kno I put 5 quarts in it. So thts not the problem any ideas or should I change the oil to be on the safe side

sounds like an oil leak. the question is where or it could be the oil is getting past the rings or you have a bad valve seal

I have no visable wher the car is parked. As for the valve seal ill look at it and post my results. Could it be possible the car is burning the oil ecesssivly. What would the bet oil to put in it. I'm using quaker state advanced 10w-30

If you can smell oil burning I would suggest taking a look at the engine gaskets, mainly the valve cover gaskets and intake manifold gaskets. If any are leaking enough to drip on the exhaust manifolds or cross-under pipe if you have one, this will cause the smell you are noticing. Usually when this happens, oil drip on the ground is minimal because it burns away on the hot exhaust. This types of leaks can be sneaky.

If you have a lot of blowby due to poor ring seal like previously mentioned, sometimes the rear main seal can leak prematurely. However, this type of leak usually results in excessive oil dripping. If the valve seals are bad enough to burn tas much oil as you say is disappearing, usually lots of blue smoke out the tailpipe is evident, especially at startup. I'm confident the rings and valve seals are just fine. If you can actually smell the oil, I think it's an external leak somewhere. Take a look for any wet spots looking down on teh engine from the top and looking up at it from the bottom.

1st, I would stop using the quaker state. Parafin=sludge=oil burning. 2nd, as Drewsdeville said, start looking at the front and rear valve cover gaskets. Oil leaking from the front or rear valve cover gaskets will burn off on the exhaust manifold, hence the oil burning smell. Also check the intake gaskets, they are prone to leaking on the 4.x engines. Hope this helps.

Ok I will look at that too. So what oil should I use. And no blue smoke sometimes you can't even tell this car is on lol.

Don't get paranoid about oil brands. One is as good as the next. Todays oils don't sludge up like they used to.

So if I understand you correctly, you have 2500 miles on this oil and it is low. How low? Engines DO use oil and it is pretty normal to have to add a qt every 2-3K.

The oil cooler lines are known to leak too.

I looked. The manifolds and I couldn't see the valve cover gaskets due to no space and the engine was hot but I didn't smell what I smelled before and a friend of mine told me to add a quart which I did but only a half before I drove it to get a acurate level and its fine. But what I don't understand is how could it be that low to where its add and on the older car I had 86 sdv it didn't burn tht much oil but when it got low you could smell it when it got low around 3-4k. So I'm gonna watch it the next couple days and post my results

You can't smell low oil. If you smell oil, you have a leak that is burning off. Simple as that.

This is the first time I've heard of problems with intake gaskets,I'm on my
third 4.9 in 5 years and have never heard of this before, was any particular one of the 4.x engines known for this?.

It's supposedly common according to this board. I myself haven't witnessed anything extraordinary. I had a leaking intake gasket on one 4.5 .

From what I've been told, the iron heads with an aluminum manifold are some what of a problem in long term. My Chevy van with the 5.7 eng had the manifold gasket fail. Many Chevy pick ups had manifold gasket problems in the 90s.

So its either oil displacement of being burned off over time or a manifold gasket. Ill keep an eye on the gasket.
