: Engine in the car repair... how many gaskets?

okay so my tech is doing the job with engine in car... i already have the head gaskets... what other gaskets and seals are needed for 2002 sts? so far i have:

Cooling System : Water Outlet Gasket
FEL-PRO Part # 35346
DOHC engine; Water outlet

Engine : Valve Stem Seal
FEL-PRO Part # SS71043
DOHC engine; Premium valve stem seals incl.

Engine : Valve Cover Gasket
FEL-PRO Part # VS50526R
DOHC engine; w/Grommets & Spark plug tube seals; PermaDryŽ molded rubber gskts. incl.

Exhaust : Exhaust Manifold Gasket
FEL-PRO Part # MS93371 {Set}
DOHC Engine

Cooling System : Water Pump Gasket
FEL-PRO Part # 35659
DOHC engine; Loc. Upper; To block

Engine : Intake Manifold Gasket
FEL-PRO Part # MS93313 {Set}
DOHC Engine

Engine : Timing Cover Seal
SKF Part # 20018 {(Only 3 Remaining)}

what am i missing? or is that everything? i only need to upper water pump gasket right?

i don't know what is what... i'm just going with the info i can gather... thanks!

Unless you are doing a valve job (usually not necessary) you don't need valve stem seals.

The rest of it appears pretty well covered, and if you break or are missing something, a NAPA store will have the rest.

ok cool... so i should only need the upper water pump gasket...right? the lower triagular one i shouldnt need?

and no valve stem seals either (thanks for saving me $40 submariner)

If you pull the water crossover there are 4 ring gaskets for that. It's a once-in-a-while leak point, so maybe a good idea to go through the crossover and water pump while the engine is out - it's a world easier now. Pure hell in the car.

Valve stem seals involve head disassembly and valve spring removal. You should not need that - just carefully clean all the combustion chambers and valve faces and for God's sake, DO NOT use any sort of Scotch Brite pad or polisher anywhere near an engine. NEVER.

If you have to remove the cam rollers and hydraulic lash adjusters make very sure each goes back in the exact place it came from - don't mix & match. Be very careful with cam bearing cap torque in that case.

.........and there's a redesigned water pump housing cover - leak prone also.

No he has not... but i would love to tell you what he thinks about it when done... Yes he is inserting all 20 holes via Norms...

Submariner... ok... water crossover gaskets are a must and water pump housing cover is a must... i don't know what these technical parts are called... i found the water pump housing cover...

but no coolant crossover gasket... is it one that i already listed? I don't need the valve stem seal unless its damaged i guess...

Coolant crossover gaskets are in sets of 4. Not sure if they have different numbers.

Some use the cam/valve cover gasket again. Condition-wise, it's your call.

Are the water pump gaskets AKA coolant crossover gaskets? it looks like they sell each one individually... not sure about this...

If he does it like I did, he wont need the timing cover gasket or seal. You can do the job without removing the balancer and by just removing the timing cover bolts. It will open up enough to get to the tensioners and the gasket did not tear. I have 10k miles and no leaks from there. Although they come in pairs (I believe), you only need one exhaust manifold gasket, as I left the rear manifold on the head. I left the crossover attached to the block, and just inspected the area well for evidence of leakage.

Whoa... That is interesting... so you only replaced head gaskets and ONE exhaust gasket? nothing else? no intake gaskets no water pump gaskets?

any one else care to chime in about what all gaskets MUST be replaced?

That post wasnt meant to be all inclusive, I was merely commenting on some of the previous posts. Off the top of my head, I used 2 head gaskets, 1 exhaust gasket, 1 intake gasket (although I believe the manual says to inspect and if the silicone looks good you can reuse), 2 valve cover gaskets, front cam seal behind the water pump pulley, and 2 upper crossover gaskets. You mentioned water pump, we may be talking the same thing. But you really dont need to disturb the water pump. Plus, I changed all hoses while it was apart.

Most of the rubber gaskets are considered reuseable, but they get hard with age adn may not seal well if you reuse them. You don not HAVE to replace them but it's advisable.

Someone had a spreadsheet with the gasket's and pn's. I don't have that saved anymore. Anyone else save it?
