Hey everybody! I have 1992 DeVille with a 4.9 engine. All of a sudden, it has been sounding like a lawnmower when I accelerate. I am pretty sure it is the muffler. It is really rusty and beat up looking and it probably has a hole somewhere. What I want to know is what kind of muffler I want to get to give me a certain sound. I want a lower sound: a deep pur at idle(still pretty quiet like a caddy) and a bit of a roar(like a LION!) when revving(closer to a muscle car), but not that crackling sound. I don't want a high pitched whiny sound or a loud sound while accelerating normally. I want a deep-sounding cadillac that sounds powerful when you almost touch the pedal to the floor. I don't mind it being a little louder than the original muffler at idle or revving but deep is what I am really after. Ideas, recomendations, thoughts, brands. How does your caddy sound with what you got on it? Thanks in advance!

I just put a Dynomax Ultra Flo (Part # 17513 to be exact) on my 4.9 and I love it...had it for about 2000 miles now.

It's a 2.5" offset in / 2.5"center out just like the stock muffler and is 25" long, very close to stock length so muffler shop had a real easy time putting it in.

I did a lot of research on mufflers and I'm extremely pleased with the sound its given me.

The muffler is a straight through design and just has insulation packed on the outsides of the tube, like a glasspack.

I got it off Amazon of all places for 79.00 shipped! Most places I look now want 100 or more at least before shipping, idk guess I got an "open box" one but it was brand new, good beads on all the welds, looks great.

As far as sound it is definitely quiet at highway speeds, once it gets in 4th all you hear is a very faint low rumble as it sips gas. I get no annoying drone in the cabin while cruising. It will get loud though, especially on startup and WOT. Mine will fire up loud and then calm down into a deep, low rumble of an idle, it's really nice. Resonates through the ground pretty good too, you'll feel it.
It really won't get that loud unless you WANT it to, and when you want it to...it WILL. There's definitely no high pitched whining anywhere haha but there is some crackle in the higher RPM's around the shifts...sounds awesome.

No cat either on mine (I know some of you are going :tisk:) so I'm sure that has an effect on the sound, probably not much though I wouldn't know...

Best of luck,

I have a Walker Quietflow3 sitting in a box waiting to be installed for my Deville. Its the same design as the Dynomax posted above (made by the same company) except the quietflow has a bend in the design so that it is quieter on exit. You can get it in the standard (2.5" in/offset, 2.5" out/center), but the one I purchased is 2.5"in/offset, 2.25"out/offset x 2 (dual out).

Mine is the same part number for a 2002 Z/28, so that will probably give you a better idea of what it would sound like. Cost me $46.45 after rebate from RockAuto.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. Anybody else have any other suggestions or comments for mufflers?

I still love my flowmaster 80. Alot of guys dont like them because "a caddy shouldn't sound like that" but I dont do things "the way people think they should be done" because its MY car and Im the one who hears it the most and I like the sound. Just dont mess with the cat converter. It has alot to do with the way the car sounds. If you gut the conv. and you have a flowmaster, you WILL regret it. Dont get greedy with the sound.... I got way more than i bargained for.

Thanks everyone. You gave me some good stuff to work with! As soon as I fix my car, it's new muffler time! I'll let you know which one I choose.

you might want to check the pipe convecting the cat to the intermediate pipe you might have a crack in it .now if you looking for a cheap fix in a muffler the cherrybomb turbo they don't have a bad sound to it and its only about $20 but they start to rust after a year . but you cant go wrong with a flowmaster 80 series and a set of square tips tucked up about a half inch from the bumper

Here's something I threw together real quick earlier.

I plan to get a higher quality recording with a CONDENSER microphone instead of the crappy camera mics. Still turned out pretty good though I think, especially if you have some good computer speakers.

And here's a link to download just the audio from the clip above in UNCOMPRESSED .wav format. I can't wait to record this stuff with a condenser mic, ya'll will be blown away by the difference in sound quality, if you have the speakers to do it justice. It will probably all sound the same on tinny little computer speakers most people seem to have :annoyed:
