Hello,
ok, I'm new to this navigation radio stuff and I need help... bought 03 escalade esv..installed navigation radio (non touch screen) cause old one evidently broke, got dealer to unlock, and I have no disks that came with this vehicle...
1st what part numbers version or how do I know what I can use without payin 200 for the new newest one (doesn't bother me if it's older lol)?
2nd do I have to do the upgrade steps in order (I don't even know what version was in there before)?
3rd are all the NAV discs in DVD format?
Newbie here with this technology so please excuse any ignorant questions upfront...
Hey ZolaZoey,
A Nav DVD did not come with my 2005 Escalade either and had to do a lot of research before finally decided to buy an upgraded one. A very irritating process....:rant2: New streets, express ways and sub-divisions were constructed in my town with in the last 5 years and I wanted them on my Nav Disc, which is why I chose to upgrade mine.
If you don't want to spend money on a new upgraded disc, a good start would be to contact GMNavDisc.com and ask them for the part # and version of the disc which came with an 03 Escalade. A lot of junk yards may also have it where you can try it before buying. Or, you can go to Ebay and search for it. Nav Disc part # and version is usually mentioned on the sellers page. You can verify this part number with GMNavDisc.com before bidding or purchasing one on Ebay.
B2B...Yes there is alot of research as I have found out :tongue2: makes a person go crazy looking at all those numbers...When I went to gmnavdisk.com they would only pull up the newest version and when I typed in the older numbers they would say no longer available..bout gave up on having navigation...
Nathanjax thanks for the info....and funny dvd format but won't play movies
I have actually found a guy a couple hours away from me that has the version 3.0 disk so came out pretty lucky...salvage yards no help around here..when had to replace the radio most just laughed when I said navigation. :bonkers: finally found one but had to replace all the buttons...even our local dealer had only seen two go through their dealership in vehicles...(had to take in instructions from this forum to get them to untheftlock radio!)
Hey ZolaZoey,
You did good if your found one of those disc that actually works.... Don't know what you paid it but it can be pretty pricy. Enjoy that unit, am sure it'll come in handy if you ever get lost.......
BTW, yes it's too bad that the Nav won't play regular DVD's. However, if you every decide that you would like to watch movies on you Nav unit, install an interface, then you can watch movies on the Nav screen with an external DVD player. The interface will also unlock your Nav and XM radio.

Hey Zolazoey,
That's a very good price for that disk, wish we all had your luck.... I would have bought two for the price.
Anyway, to answer your question about the interface. There are several write ups with pictures on this issue elsewhere on this forum.
Ok, right now your OEM Nav unit cannot play any DVD movies, games, mp3, iPod, or even has inputs to add a back up camera. Also you cannot operated the navigation (add/change address, look up restaurants, gas stations, routes, etc.) while your car is in motion (a GM safety precaution). And you can only get certain XM radio channels.
An interface is a electronic unit that plugs in (wired) to your touch or non-touch screen Navigation unit. Depending on which company makes it, an interface can have various options such as video input, audio input, back up camera input, USB charger, iPod/mp3 inputs, Bluetooth for cell phones, remote control, etc. All of which can be played through your OEM Nav unit in color and with sound. It will also unlock your Navigation and XM radio, which will allow you to operate it while in motion and also pick up XM channels that otherwise you cannot receive. The best part of it is that you will not loose any on your steering wheel controls and can remove it if you ever sell your vehicle.
I have one on order, which am planning on installing to my Nav unit. It should be a very interesting installation. Can't wait....... I may even do a detailed write up with pictures on this forum on "How to install a Navigation Interface" if I get time.
Yes it was luck for sure...he had ended up buying two copies and had an extra he didn't need...well worth it!
:bouncy: oh cool beans!! B2B that is awesome info...I had read a little bit about it cause I seen cables similiar to that mentioned on ebay...but they didn't offer near that information..Thank you for explaing the full benefits of it...
:worship:
what brand/type of cable are you getting and where is the best place to get these? If I'm right they described these and basicly plug and play right?
Hey ZolaZoey,
You're welcome!! Glad to hear that you understood how interface works...
For my 05 Escalade, I would have to open the bottom of the Nav Unit and install a ribbon cable (not very hard). I assume that it would be the same for 04 to 06 Escalades. Once the ribbon cable is installed, everything else is plug and play.
Unfortunately, the one you see on ebay are not as complete as the one I have ordered. You can find Nav Unlock Unit for 07, 08, 09 Escalades that has complete Unlock, Video/Audio inputs in one component. But when I searched for my 05 Escalade on ebay, it gave me an option with video inputs only. Then I would have to buy a separate audio component or FM modulator for the audio part. Needless to say that I didn’t like that idea....:nono:
So, after much detailed search and networking, I finally found a company to communicate with and came to an agreement with them. They would custom make and sell me there product through my business because they are not open to the public. Well, I ordered it through my business and now waiting for the product. They guarantee there product will work or money back, so we'll see how it goes.
