Gold plating the key really makes a statement IMO, it just reeks of excess and luxury. It makes the newer Cadillac keys look like junk, most of them have the crest missing off of them.
Cadillac really should go back to a solid metal key with the crest embossed and the entire thing gold plated. It is one of those little details about the old Cadillacs people really remember being special. hueterm 08-30-09, 10:30 AM I hate the gold keys. Since the gold wears off...what's the point? I~LUV~Caddys8792 08-30-09, 10:39 AM It's one of those small joys that makes owning a Cadillac so special. It wouldn't work very well today though...people want keyless ignition nowadays. submariner409 08-30-09, 11:49 AM ........and it's difficult to get a transponder pellet into a metal key head. To each his own i guess, but I agree that anything gold plated screams cheap to me. dkozloski 08-30-09, 01:46 PM Keys only work in the old clunkers. A modern Cadillac starts with a cheesy fob. hueterm 08-30-09, 03:40 PM To each his own i guess, but I agree that anything gold plated screams cheap to me.
I have a couple of shotguns w/gold plated triggers that don't look cheap :-)

I have a double barreled shotgun with gold and silver inlays in the floral engraving that looks pretty good too. Aron9000 08-31-09, 02:27 AM ........and it's difficult to get a transponder pellet into a metal key head.

Those keys you posted above aren't transponder keys. What you have the arrow pointing to is the old VATS system method of using a pellet with a simple resistor inside it. The system is obsolete and I imagine car theives loved it as it is pretty easy to steal by mimicking the resistance in the pellet. The transponder in the pk3 system uses an rf chip in the head of the key that sends a radio signal to the theft module. Even these arent theft proof with modern technology and the easy to buy bypass kits made for remote starts, but they are steps above the VATS system key you posted above.....
OSU411 Aron9000 08-31-09, 03:09 AM ^ Good info there. I thought the new keys worked like the old ones in that they sent an electrical current containing a code to the ECU. I thought the only real difference in technology between the old and new keys was a longer, infinetly random, better encrypted code. slk230mb 08-31-09, 09:55 AM I wish I could get a flip key/fob for my Escalade...they are just sooo much fun... I have a key FOB that stays in my pocket and I hardly ever see. To hell with going back to a key in any form. For my Q45, I used 3M mounting tape to physically bond my key to my fob. INSTANT BMW.
The current Cadillac keys are quiet boring. billc83 08-31-09, 12:48 PM My Deville's keys are gold plated and have the chip installed in them.
How about an entirely gold-plated FOB, though? dkozloski 08-31-09, 12:57 PM For my Q45, I used 3M mounting tape to physically bond my key to my fob. INSTANT BMW.

BMW keys are noisy boring? ewill3rd 08-31-09, 09:46 PM The gold keys were something extra you could get back in the day.
They are gone, if you have to replace your locks or cut a new key you cannot get the gold ones anymore.
The gold does rub off after a while.
Personally I am not a fan of keys but I don't much like the "easy key" system either.
I have adapted but...
Driving so many different kinds of cars every day, it is embarassing when I jump in and instinctually try to turn a lock cylinder when there isn't one. I liked the gold keys FWIW.
Also have a Browning 12 ga. with a gold trigger and I inlayed the engraving with silver. Looks great! I~LUV~Caddys8792 08-31-09, 10:50 PM How about a platinum key (fob)? Would work well with the Platinum edition Escalades and DTSs. Rodya234 08-31-09, 11:25 PM My dad got four sets of keys when he bought my Deville. two regular and two gold. One set of the gold is worn out, but the other looks brand new, the teeth in the ignition key are still razor sharp. Red_October_7000 08-31-09, 11:25 PM I liked the gold keys too. I'm also a bit of a stickler about having the correct keys; it bugs me that the keys to my 'Vette and even my MR2 are not factory keys. At least those are common enough that I can probably have correct ones made up (unlike my dad's 99 'Vette that uses a special keyblank that is very hard to come by and costly for GM to make). My favorites are however the Chrysler ones that used to be not only gold, but with a piece of (fake?) crystal in the head carved into the Chrysler star. dirt_cheap_fleetwood 08-31-09, 11:53 PM I have a set of gold keys for the Brougham as well. I also still have the gold keys from my wrecked '95 DeVille. I made duplicates of each and only have the gold keys for show, I do not use them on a regular basis. dkozloski 08-31-09, 11:58 PM Back in the day, car keys looked like a key for a wall locker. DopeStar 156 09-01-09, 12:28 AM I use my gold set everytime. I still have two in the little wallet that are perfect and uncut. I like the physical feel of turning the key in that wrist twisting motion towards the firewall, I always wanted to do that when I was a kid and I appreciate every time I actually do it now......
Gold keys are boss..... ^^^ Or a cheap padlock. My early Jaguar keys looked like they would fit a cheap lock .... interestingly enough would unlock and start half the Jags in Hollywood! I~LUV~Caddys8792 09-01-09, 12:33 AM I wish I kept a set of keys from my deVille, it would be nice to have a set of gold keys just for fun. Last time I was at the junkyard, I snagged the keys out of a '93 Continental...not gold, but still cool to have. BMW keys are noisy boring?
Touche, typo catcher! osu411yamaha 09-01-09, 02:47 AM ^^^ Or a cheap padlock. My early Jaguar keys looked like they would fit a cheap lock .... interestingly enough would unlock and start half the Jags in Hollywood!
Bob Barker wants his Jag back!!!!!!! dkozloski 09-01-09, 10:41 AM When I was a kid, my neighbor reached under the dash on his old Ford truck with the wood spoked wheels, twisted two wires togethey, and got out front with a big crank to make it go. I was way more impressed by that than the turning of a key on any newer machine. fierodough 09-01-09, 11:37 AM I got it!!!
Imbed the tranponder in....

You can still have a second key and tranponder for additional drivers etc..
I think this would be a first? and classy! osu411yamaha 09-01-09, 11:46 AM If you really want some security have it surgically imbedded in your forearm.... Aron9000 09-02-09, 02:12 AM I got it!!!
