just bought a '72 eldo thats engine is in very good condition. however, out of the 30-40 times i've started it the engine, 4 times it would "diesel" for a few seconds. I've asked around and been told its fairly common with a 500ci, especially if there is carb build up. Also told that it could have to do with the octane fuel i'm using (87). does anyone have any ideas as to why the engine will diesel every so often and also what octane is best for the engine (has 110k original miles)l..thanks

72 500s should have 8.5:1 compression. So that shouldn't be a problem. Try checking the timing.
