Got the Navi unit, Just installed a Punch 500 amp with Pineer Premier 10" Shallow Mount Sub that is in the space of the factory sub with a custom box built around it on the top of the trunk area. Bass is now excellent! Car is out getting wheels powder coated flat black right now, doing a couple other things to the car, but getting near done, will post pics later

Seriously, that plus a line-in port with at-least-1-step-up-from-default factory system is all I wanted. I have the 6-disc DVD w/Nav factory system.

I put this Sony XPlod GT 820IP into my previous Park Avenue a couple months before the engine died (and I bought my STS). I was very happy with the unit except for the horrid iPod integration. While it did a nice job working with the unit, the 3 line LCD display is a complete backwards step in controlling the iPod. The very first iPod's screen was easier to read and its interface simpler to use. I just ran the iPod through the AUX input instead of the iPod integration. Unless the headunit has a large screen, I feel iPod integration is a waste of time - just give me the AUX input and some way of positioning the iPod in my reach and view.

My kids love the Sony in our 15 year old mini-van that they drive around since it has so much more power than the Villager's factory unit.

How does the iPod with a line in sound? worse than a CD?

How does the iPod with a line in sound? worse than a CD?

In the end it depends on the quality of and original source for the media files on the iPod.

In general, files made at 192Kbs file or lower (128K was the original breakthrough MP3 file rate), sound crappy on any good playback system. Played through standard headphone/earbuds in a noisy environment, these low bit rate files sound fine. You just don't notice the phased cymbal crashes and muddied sharp bass lines until you playback through a good home stereo (not the average computer setup).

But well made 256K and up files sound as good as CDs in the imperfect sound chamber of a car interior. Of course, once you start listening for the differences (cymbals) you can still ID the digital file versus a well-made commercial CD in just about any environment.

I see a lot of people around here talk about MP3 CDs & DVDs, but I much prefer the flexibility of playlists I can organize and change without reburning CDs and the storage capacity of a full iPod.

To top it off, I actually stream just as much entertainment through my iPhone into the Caddy system. Between my 6,000 music files, dozens of podcasts and hundreds of streaming radio stations my audio entertainment choices greatly outstrip the whole XM environment. The convenience of XM just does not offset the yearly cost for me. If I were to pay for anything like XM, I would get a Live365.com subscription (about the same as XM) and have access to THOUSANDS of specialty stations through my iPhone and their Live365 app.

I understand bit rate. I was more asking how the quality of a line in input was.

It's excellent. With one caveat. If you use a car power adapter then you can introduce an electrical noise into the feed. Radio Shack has a ground loop insulator that someone around here claims it eliminates the noise. Usually it's a small block of metal in a plastic housing that snaps around the cable to soak up the electrical feedback.

This one is built into an audio cable, and I know I saw one with a 1/8 jack at one end too. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062214

And you plug it in via the RCAs in the center console?

MacMuse
08-19-09, 11:56 AM
Yes, and I realize I have cables running all over the console area (power & audio) but I refuse to give up the iPhone & iPod interfaces. And with the cords loose in the cabin I can (and have) let back seat passengers charge their phone or used their device to push audio through the system. This "system" also easily transfers to the mini van for family trips.

The center console does have two little notches on the sidewalls to let cables pass out of the console lid without pinching the cables. The power plug just barely clears with the lid closed. If you have your choice of adapters, get the shortest one possible. I believe mine is the Belkin.

I enjoy my Pacific Accessories uPAC-STS that provides I-Pod integration, power & control through the Nav/Bose head-end. The I-Pod resides in the glove-box (it almost fills it!) and is always charged. You can browse all the standard I-Pod categories using the Nav/Bose screen & tuner knob. All of the cars controls work as if you're on XM.

Take a picture of your own car. It looks just like that!

See the Lockpick installation video for detailed instructions. I have mine between my Lockpick & the Nav/Bose. I have a friend that always upgrades his car audio (even in his 50th Anniversary 'Vette). He spends thousands to get sound only a bit better than OEM. But he has fun!

Do you lose your XM if you install that?

No, you retain all your inputs (XM included) with the uPAC-STS module.

If I look on uPacs website, it says they dont produce it anymore?

It's a harness, plugs & a box. If they still make their other GM Lan Stuff it can probably be done pretty easy. Too bad they didn't sell enough. When I bought mine 6 months ago they didn't sell direct. I'll find my distributor. They may have something better.

Operation keyed to the XM softkey. Preset XM buttons would not invoke it. Tuning knob activity w/in 5 secs engages a scrolling set of inputs. The box appeared to be capable of 4 but wiring for only 2. The integration with the touch screen could have been better but it is easy to use. I bought the HD Radio input for my #2. My camcorder uses the STS Aux Jacks.

I have my iPod connected in the center console via the RCA's, it's nice, but would like the integration.
My only complaint is that video is really dark on the screen when watching movies from the iPod.

Maybe PAC is working on video integration because my unit does not support video. I'd bet that's insurmountable and ifmracin has the only configuration that can display iPod video.

Let me be the first to throw some pics up. I used a JL stealth sub that was made for the Mk IV VW Golfs, but it works the same in the STS. The stealth sub mounts in the trunk under the spare tire. This will raise the tire about an inch and a half, so I built a tri-fold floor and supported it around the sub with foam insulation. I used a Pheonix Gold amp along with a gain adjustment knob mounted in the trim plate right in front of the center console. System sounds really good, with a lot of extra low end bass. The biggest challenge was getting a signal line into the amp. I had to get a LOC along with a line driver to get it to work.

I like where you mounted your adjustment knob for the amp, I think I have found my new mounting spot :) Putting my blinder laser jammer switch there, if I do remote control for my amp I will put it there as well. Awesome little spot!
