I did a short search and didnt find what i needed, im obviously new to this board but how to you check the codes? how do you clear the codes? and i also need to know why when i drive the car its hard to slow it down because it wants to idle at 1700ish rpm this is odd im not sure what it is thats making it do it but any help would be adviced, also in clearing the codes would that get rid of the messages such as the ones telling me to change the oil ect.? oh yeah the car is a 93 eldorado. Thanks in advance!

to start the OBDI, turn the key to the on position. press the "off" and "warmer" buttons on your climate control panel. it should tell you the codes after that. it will display 7.0 when its finished.
to clear my codes i just disconnected the battery for 30 seconds, i think there is a way to do this on the climate control panel but idk how. this will clear everything, however if you havent fixed whatever it was that was causing the problem the codes/warning lights will come back within a week or so.
as far as your high idle goes, i would think its the idle speed control motor or something of that nature. im sure somebody else will shed some light on this for you.

to start isolating the problem of idling too high, use search, typing keyword "throttle body cleaning" or "TB cleaning 4.9" something like that. that'll most likely be your culprit.
press off and warmer buttons simotaniously like above mentioned. write down any codes that come up and post them. when it's done checking for codes, it should display "ecm?" I haven't cleared any codes for a while. I'd have to get my manual for that, but I think you can just disconnect the battery for a while (5 mins should work for sure) and that'd clear history codes. any codes that are still giving you trouble should re-appear.

I can tell you that I just fixed that problem on my car. Is your gas pedal not popping back up right away sometimes also? It was a dirty throttle. The gunk in it kept causing it to stick, so it would have trouble closing. This should cause "open throttle signal switch" engine code which in turn cuts on your service engine soon light. It's pretty cheap to get fixed at a mechanic shop. Hope this helps. :hmm:

after entering diagnostic mode by pressing off and warmer at the same time, then hold off and high, that will clear the current ecm codes and the engine will relearn its perimeters, pressing off and low clears the bcm codes, which can help when repairing the a/c so you don't have to unhook the battery to get the compressor clutch to engage after a low refridgerent charge code is tripped, i'm currently battling my a/c system :coolgleam
