Hay guys, new to the board.

Hoping somebody can help me out with a question. Looking at purchasing a Northstar motor, but wasn't sure on how to decode the serial numbers. I'm particularly interested in what year the motor is before purchasing. I would image this is the best place for this kind of technical information, so any imput would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Jeff H.

Assume you are looking at a standard fore-and-aft engine, not FWD.

On the front right side of the block, just below the front corner of the right cylinder head is a machined pad. The VIN derivative number, an abbreviation of the original vehicle's VIN, is stamped or etched into the pad. A GM dealer service writer can decipher it.

Not sure what you want the Northstar for, or even if you're looking for a FWD or RWD setup There are both, and both are VERY different. The 2000+ 4.6L Northstars in the FWD series have roller cam followers, so that's the best of the FWD's.
