View Full Version : e.g.r. valve creeker 08-08-09, 01:09 AM I have a 92 sdv,I have tried search but no luck, how do I go about cleaning egr valve?, or direct me to correct info., I remember something
about keeping it level while working on it, Thank you Sevillian273 08-08-09, 11:02 AM Spray the pintle with with TB cleaner while holding it upright so the cleaner drains down and doesnt damage the diaphragm. It should be fine, its the electric egr valves that are more sensitive to chemicals, and more expensive... Make sure the diaphragm moves up and down freely and that the pintle seats all the way back down when you release it. You will probably need a new egr gasket to put it back on or you can reuse the old one(if its in one piece) with some blue RTV. creeker 08-08-09, 12:55 PM Spray the pintle with with TB cleaner while holding it upright so the cleaner drains down and doesnt damage the diaphragm. Thanks again Sevillian, what exactly is the pintle?. Sevillian273 08-08-09, 02:18 PM The end of the shaft that comes down from the diaphragm - the part that gets dirty.. creeker 08-08-09, 02:40 PM The end of the shaft that comes down from the diaphragm - the part that gets dirty..
Thanks,I'm kinda new to car maintenance,I bought this car as a project and to try to learn basic car care, thanks for your help. cadillac_al 08-10-09, 11:19 AM I wouldn't mess with it unless I got a code for it. Clean the EGR tubes that are below the throttle body. It is more common for those tubes to get plugged up. Enjoy the 92, I love mine. creeker 08-11-09, 12:04 AM I wouldn't mess with it unless I got a code for it. Clean the EGR tubes that are below the throttle body. I think I'll take your advice, if it aint broke dont fix it,I checked out my t.b. and egr valves, both very clean,I am still trying to found out why the
first start of the day is a little rough,it spits, coughs and sputters before it starts, and then it starts and runs beautiful for the rest of the day, when I spray the t.b. with some t.b. cleaner it fires up instantly, so it sounds like a lack of sufficient fuel in t.b. after it has sat all night, I replaced the map,(which I now have learned does not help with initial startup),I also replaced mat sensor,no help either, oh well.it'a hobby car. Cream_Devil_91 08-11-09, 12:33 AM Funny story, when I rodded my egr tubes out one was completely carboned shut and the other was nearly too. After I cleaned them and the throttle body with a toothbrush, I got the E48 code after about 50 miles and hasn't gone away since...go figure. I've bought a new egr valve and will be getting it on within the week, I'll post back with an update... creeker 08-11-09, 01:28 AM Funny story, when I rodded my egr tubes out one was completely carboned shut and the other was nearly too. The codes that came up on my 92 sdv were E-31 map sensor and E-74.

There is no fuel in the TB. Fuel is delivered down stream of the TB in the manifold just before the intake valves. TB simply regulates air. creeker 08-11-09, 01:15 PM There is no fuel in the TB. Thanks Ranger, the mystery continues. creeker 08-11-09, 03:33 PM There is no fuel in the TB. Fuel is delivered down stream of the TB in the manifold just before the intake valves. TB simply regulates air.
I just experimented again, car would not start,I squirted some t.b. cleaner in t.b.,it started faster than fast,it barely cranked over and it caught. That indicates little or no fuel pressure. Get a gauge on the fuel rail and see what kind of fuel pressure you have. Might be fuel pump time. creeker 08-11-09, 07:20 PM That indicates little or no fuel pressure. Thanks for reply, hopefully I am solving this in bits and pieces of info. revdowrong 08-12-09, 01:16 AM The codes that came up on my 92 sdv were E-31 map sensor and E-74.
intermittent mat sensor signal.
replace map sensor and mat sensor Cream_Devil_91 08-12-09, 02:46 PM Well here is mine at 85k, it was stuck open and completely carboned as you can see...
If your tubes are heavily carboned as mine were, your egr valve may be in the same shape as mine...
Got new one on, code disappeared and engine is more responsive :bouncy: Clean it and it should be good as new. Cheaper than replacing it. | |
