Hi, can anyone help with this? I removed the rear disc brake caliper unit to see if the pads needed replacement. Then while it was off the disc, I stepped on the brake, and the brake cylinder extended so that I can't get it retracted enough to reinstall the pads and caliper onto the disc. On other cars, I have always been able to push the cylinder back in with a large C clamp. On the these brakes, it won't budge. What am I missing?

Update- I found out that the pistons actually turn, rather than simply slide in and out? Does that sound right? Does anybody know which way they rotate to retract? Does anyone know where I can get the special tool?

Please help, I'm fairly :bonkers: with this.

Thanks in advance.

BTW- Great Forum. I'm glad I found it.

IF the puck is not blown out of the caliper bore, screw it in clockwise. Use a spanner wrench, brake puck tool, or needlenose tips. Make sure the indents line up correctly with the brake pad backing.

As you found out, NEVER apply any brake pressure whatsoever when the pads/rotors are off - you stand a very good chance of blowing the puck(s) right out of the caliper, and then it's rebuild time because those tapered cylinder seals don't like to be pushed in the wrong direction.

Once you manage to get the piston back in, notice the the inner brake pad has a bump on it that fits into a recess in the piston face. Me thinks you need someone to do this. You should never learn to do brake repair without supervision. Could be the last brake job you do!!!
