View Full Version : annoying creeking near sunroof wacka888 07-24-04, 12:11 AM anyone else have an annoying creeking around the sunroof. happends round turns on bumps and such. pisses me off like a lot...poor build quality. got a 98 e320 with 100 thousand miles, and it doesnt make noise ever, thing is a vault....I love my SRX, but creeking and cracking kills me.... I also have an annoying creek....just don't think it's coming from the sunroof. Mine creeks when pulling in/out of my driveway, or any driveway, never head on. Just when 1 or 2 wheels make contact first. Sounds like the creeking is coming from the trunk, but who knows!!
Will wait a week or so & see what happens. (It only started last week) i have the same annoying problem. It sounds like there is something loose up around the sunroof that rattles around when ever i hit a bump or even on slightly rough road. I can't seem to locate the exact location but it is definitly from around the sunroof. Little things like that drive me crazy I have the same squeek but only when the sunroof is open. I seem to remember someone else having this same problem and the dealer fixed it. I'll have them fix mine when I take it in for my first oil change. Well, my SRX also does this, and I do believe it has everything to do with the sun roof, a very large piece of glass, and a fairly complex design. Mine only does this when I first get in the car, always once, maybe twice, mostly when the two front tires are over a dip, and one is over, the other not yet. Anyway, I think it has to do with the large piece of glass, and with the fact how rigid it is compared to the rest of the car. I am not saying this is an excuse, but this type of roof is complex, and very rewarding. I am not going to complain, anyway, if I am right, no dealer is going to be able to fix the problem. In fact, when I get to the dealer, it will not be doing it by that time. It is a design proble, probably not a manufacturing issue.
John JKN, I think you're right. Thought the creeking was coming from the trunk, but it may be from the sunroof.
Is it worth mentioning to dealer? Can it be fixed, or just wasting my time?
Could get pretty annoying over time!! (Or it may just settle). Wonder if this was why they gave $1,500 off for buying with no sun roof? JDelorean_srx 07-25-04, 07:44 PM Part of the reason gm is/has been giving a discount for no-ultra view is because the demand/desire for the roof has been more than double what they anticipated. (Originally 30% were to be ultraview, they are at 70% and climbing..) Hope the supplier can keep up, and still have a quality 'system' - as the entire roof is delivered, to the factory, as one unit. :coolgleam
oh btw, I've just started noticing a sunroof-based rattle, after just over 4k miles. It appears to be coming from the passenger side, above the front door. While traveling I've opened the roof, then closed, and the rattle appears to go away - I really hate to keep turning the sound up, as many dealers will advise with an internitten, non-findable problem.. :drinker Samboosa 07-27-04, 07:57 AM i dont even know where the creeks i hear come from! :crying2: Bottom line........Can this creeking sunroof be fixed? Has anyone been successful? I also have an SRX V8 that has the same noise coming from Ultraview. I have put Armor All on the rubber gaskets that seal the roof and it seems to help some of the. I also put the Armor All on the driver door seals as they sometimes get creaky over bumps. It works. Either way it is unacceptable that a car that cost me almost $60,000 has such noise in the first place.
I did take the SRX to the dealer to look into the noise and they were not able to provide a fix ( of course they could not replicate the noise). One other problem I had was that the Ultraview stopped mid stream as it was closing.
The price we pay for buying first year models !! I have a 1-month old SRX. I don't have a sunroof but I do get a creeking sound everytime I use my car (it seems to me that it comes from the rear). It happens when I am backing up, when I slow down, and whenever I am making a turn - basically, it comes off whenever I am driving really slow. I brought my car to the dealer and of course, the creeking didn't go away. I am wondering if anyone of you had this experience. I'm really frustrated because I am expecting a really quiet car from the price I've paid. By the way, I already had my 2 front doors fixed because of rattling noises. I also had my front passenger door fixed, 12 days after taking delivery. Seems they (factory) forgot the insulation in door. Now I am left with an intermittant ticking from same door.
Love the drive, however, I too am not impressed with the fit and finish of this car. Everything, and I mean everything ticks, squeeks or creeks!!!!!!
To avoid the creeking sunroof, have to backup out of driveway straight out, no turning wheels, at a snail's pace. Making a conscious effort now but who knows how long that will last.
Will definately bring all these issues to attention of dealer the next time we go in for service a/o more serious issue. sonjaab 07-29-04, 04:10 PM Folks............Mom just finished her 3 day test of a v-6 SRX w/roof.
Nice vehicle...But she is undecided at this point.
Dealer only wants to give $5k trade for her 98 Deville with 50k miles
on a GM employee deal. Thats what I expected tho.
I noticed the creaking over bumps coming from the roof. Not too
bothersome tho. Funny our Devilles are quiet like bank vaults with
roofs ! Its been pretty rainy here tho. and no leaks.
I had a couple of T/As with t-tops also a 90 Deville w/roof that leaked
like crazy and could never be corrected ! My 96 Deville had NO roof !!!
Only wife NAGGING for one on our 03 and MANY water tests before I
signed on the dotted line to make sure of NO leaks........LOL :hmm:
.........geo Samboosa 07-29-04, 08:08 PM open the sunroof a bit and close it. or maybe keep ur finger up pressing it from the side all the time!
i think it has something to do with the metal expanding from the heat. during the day time this sound is hardly there as the temeprature here hits 45c. it always starts as im getting back from work and durig night time.
thats one big sunroof we got there! open the sunroof a bit and close it. or maybe keep ur finger up pressing it from the side all the time!

I only get the creaking sound with the roof is open, never when it's closed. Everything is quite as can be when the roof is closed. :) Well, I've had my SRX exactly 9 weeks and thought the "creeky sunroof" would subside/settle in. WRONG!!!
Find it has been creeking more than usual. Can't find any connection to the problem (ie. heat, low speeds, etc.).
Am scheduled for a service next week and wonder if I should push the dealer to look at sunroof or not. Is it fixable? Has anyone had any success with a fix?
Since there are so many people with this problem, has there not been any TSB for this sunroof? Or have people not really complained to Cadillac?
Would like to hear some feedback from other SRX owners. Samboosa 08-24-04, 08:46 AM just got the car today.
the dealer lubricated the sunroof and the cable thingy that it moves on.
drove the car for like half an hour no sound yet. will have to check in the evening when the temp is not as high as now. Samboosa 08-28-04, 09:14 AM creeks are still there. i doubt this problem is solvable. creeks are still there. i doubt this problem is solvable.
Took my car in today for the first oil change and I was going to have then look at the creaking thing. Then I noticed it was gone! My wife drives the car mostly so I don't know when it went away. Oh well, we'll see what happens. Samboosa 09-01-04, 10:22 PM the sound in my car is clearly affected by the temprature.
during the day, in the heat of the sun its always perfect. no creeks.
i guess when winter strikes it will be really clear for the dealer. Finally brought my car in to dealer today to check a couple of things, most importantly creeking sunroof. According to service guy, says it's fixable........
Well, we'll just have to see!
Also doing "Lower Control Arm" recall.
Will let you know, hopefully tomorrow, if any or all of the ticks & creeks disappear!!!!!! Took my car in today for the first oil change and I was going to have then look at the creaking thing. Then I noticed it was gone! My wife drives the car mostly so I don't know when it went away. Oh well, we'll see what happens.
Ok, get a load of this. The service dept. at the dealership said they heard the creaking noise but when they checked out a new car on the lot, it did the same thing so they noted on the work ticket "Test drove with a known good one and there are no abnormal noises from the sunroof area or shade" when I spoke to the service rep. he actually tried to defend the statement and then backed off and is writing me another service ticket stating that they heard the noise and it is not normal.
To make a long story short, I was told there are no TSB's for this problem so there is not a fix for it and until there is, they can't do anything about it.
To do nothing with it after hearing it is unexceptable and I am going as high as I can or have to at GM until I get the answer I deserve. I'll let you all know what happens. Samboosa 09-02-04, 09:11 PM maybe we just have to figure out how to fix it ourselves.
1- where EXACTLY does the noise come from?
if we can pin point the exact position i'm sure we can find a solution. If you find it (and I hope you do) sell the solution to Cadillac, don't give it to them. Samboosa 09-02-04, 09:34 PM i donno maybe i am just fed up with the headache of all the problems and going to the dealer everyday.
but if i find the solution i'll post it for free on the forums! and i will NEVER inform the dealer.
i think we just need some rubber to stick at certain places and it's all solved.
they (the dealer) LUBRICATED it (and lubricated the leather seats while they were at it too - made a real mess for NOTHING). Ok, get a load of this. I e-mailed the Cadillac customer service about the whole issue and they responded immediately. They actually investigated it a little instead of just responding in a form letter. They knew I had a recall part replaced and they were investigating the sunroof issue and they are supposed to call or e-mail me on 9/8/04 with an update or solution. I will keep you all informed.
By the way. The service tech seemed to think the noise was coming from the shade when the sunroof was open and not the sunroof itself. The noise is a creak, not a rattle so I don't think that's it. I will try to investigate it further this weekend.
The fact that the noise is there is less of a concern to me than the fact that the service dept. wont even try to fix it without a TSB to tell them how to do it. They could document the problem all they want but it doesn't make it go away. Johnz, go for it!!!
I'm supposed to get my SRX back today, we'll see what kind of story I'll get about my sunroof. BTW, Cadillac Customer Service is following up with my dealer re the creeking. Everybody with this problem has to contact the customer service from Cadillac about this. They gave me a request # to follow up with them on it. Do not rely on the dealership to follow up with it. They won't do it.
Log on to Cadillac.com and click on the contact us buttom and fill out the form.
I even told them to log on to this forum and see the problems for themselves. mine sound is more of a "thump" when in or out of driveway.
pagpc I just sent a message on Cadillac.com for the same problem. I will pass on what they say. Samboosa 09-03-04, 06:23 PM anyone knows any line for overseas owners? Got my car back this PM and guess what? IT'S QUIET AS A MOUSE!!
Only got to drive approx 20 Km (13 miles) but, believe it or not, not one creeking sound from the sunroof! Even over especially bumpy, cracked roads and in/out of my driveway.
Also, my passenger door is silent for the first time. "Lower Arm" recall done at same time. According to service tech, they spent 12 hrs just on the sunroof.
Bravo to these Cadillac techs!! Now let's see how long this will last!!!!!!!
Will keep you posted. Samboosa 09-04-04, 07:48 AM Got my car back this PM and guess what? IT'S QUIET AS A MOUSE!!

any ideas of what they have done? I'm looking over the work order/invoice and trying to decipher (it is all in French) what was done.....so, here goes.
Took of the head lining and the glass......unglued the S moldings on all corners....worked on glass module....opened something with tick line....reinstalled all parts....reinstalled molding with 2-way tape, install rubber and glass of roof.
Maybe this makes some sense to some of you guys, I don't really know. Samboosa 09-04-04, 10:02 AM seems to me like they knew what they were doing.
i hope they have a TSB open for the sunroof now.
thanks and congratulations! hope the noise doesn't come back. 99DevilleDe'Elegance 09-04-04, 11:42 AM mine sound is more of a "thump" when in or out of driveway.

I have the same thumping noise, sounds like the tire slapping the tar in the cracks. At first I thought it was the load leveling system pumping up. Check this: close sun roof but leave slider open. When noise starts, open your window a bit. The noise usually stops for me. Also if you push up on the front corners of the glass while it is making the noise it should stop. This makes me think that the seal on the sunroof has shrunk up and there is just enough play that the air pressure makes it thump like it does.
I will be bouncing this theory off my local Caddy Service Dept. and will let you know if they have any brilliant ideas. compfan03 09-05-04, 06:04 PM Does the build date have anything to do with the creak. Mine is 2/04 and I have it. My build date is 4/04. And BTW, never had a thumping noise, even with the sun shade open (always) or closed. It was a definate creek.
But, now it is gone!!! Hopefully it will last. John Caddy 09-07-04, 09:19 AM My ultraview creaking is getting unbearable! To the dealer on Wednesday... JDelorean_srx 09-07-04, 08:08 PM If your crack is coming from the front=passenger side:
a. There is a 'torx' screw/bolt in the corner, it's kind of hard to see from the outside, as the roof rail is in the way. But, that could be loose. I had a similar 'rattle'/ creeking sound - tightened it up. No rattle/creek.
I had a contact at the suppliers plant - they were fielding a number of 'tech' questions about the roof..(can't do anything else, he was let go today..) Cadillac got back to me yesterday about my post to them on cadillac.com concerning the craking sound many of us have experienced. They stated that they had no information about this but told me to bring this issue to the dealer. I am sure that the dealer will have no idea how to fix it but here I go - got the appointment on Monday. I already brought mine to the dealer (See earlier posts) I am supposed to hear back from Cadillac today with a resolution or at least an update. I will let you know what they say.
:banghead: strindl 09-08-04, 11:13 PM My ultraview creaking is getting unbearable! To the dealer on Wednesday...
I drove an 04 V6 AWD SRX for a couple hours on tuesday while my CTS was in for a recall, and did enjoy the vehicle. It had the ultra roof, and it DID make noise . I tried it with the roof open and closed, sunshade open and closed, and got creaking and rattling in all positions. This is something I could not live with on a car I was driving regularly. If I do decide to trade for an srx, I don't want one with the ultra roof. mbsigman 09-12-04, 01:17 AM Howdy all.
We too have the ticking noise from the roof on our 94 SRX. Our dealer has been beating his brains out trying to fix it. Determined that the noise was coming from the top of the B pillar. There are two welds up there, and they postulate that the welds may have come undone. They tried to get expandable foam into the space, but the space between the two metal roof plates is too narrow for the foam to get into. Then they tried injecting Loctite into the space with a syringe; no fix. GM Zone Rep says they are getting increasing complaints about this situation.
Dealer has been nothing short of fantastic about this and is working very hard to a) make us happy and b) work the problem. All other manufacturers and/or dealers would have done the "could not duplicate on ground, ops checked good for service" thing (in aviation we call that 'pencil whipping') and thrown it back in our faces. Moritz Cadillac in Fort Worth, TX has gone above and beyond trying to fix this. Will keep you posted.
Mike
Will keep everyone posted. I already brought mine to the dealer (See earlier posts) I am supposed to hear back from Cadillac today with a resolution or at least an update. I will let you know what they say.
:banghead:
I got the call from the Cadillac customer service rep. He stated that there is no "definite" fix yet for the noise yet but but they are supposedly working on one. He will contact me every week with an update. (I have his name and direct # just in case he forgets) In the meantime he offered me free oil changes to ease my pain. I told him I had free changes from my dealer for the next 3 years. If nothing else, at least they are acknowledging me.
I will let you all know what is said in the next update in about a week. I got my SRX back yesterday and they fixed the noise. The tech stated that there was not fix for it in the system but they took off the headliner and drove it around until they could find out where is was coming from. Here is what they did "Removed headliner and found sunrood module tweaked. Loosen and retorque screws in sunroof assembly". If your dealer can not figure this work order out, I went to Delaware Cadillac and their number is 302-656-3100. They stated that my SRX was the only one they experienced this problem with but I am sure there is alot more out there! Good Luck. John Caddy 09-15-04, 10:46 AM After 7 days finally got 'little red' back this morning - creak could not be heard on the 20 mile drive home - here's what they wrote on my receipt...
CUST STATES THERE IS A LOT OF CREAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE SUNROOF/CHECK AND ADVISE
CALLED GM TECH LINE FOR INPUT ON THIS CONCERN/WAS TOLD TO INSTALL FOAM AND THE STOPS/INSTALLED POWDER TEFLON/SPRAY LUBE ON THE GLIDES AND STOPS
COMPLETEDLUBE THE SUNROOF GUIDES AND STOPS/
ROAD TESTED NO NOISE HEARD AT THIS TIME/
Per the service manager, GM tech is getting a lot of these calls. First fix was installing foam (I don't know where) - didn't work. Second was dry teflon lubricant - didn't work. Third was a silicon (I think) spray lube that seems to have done the trick. TIME WILL TELL!!!
Thanks:
JC
johncaddy2004@yahoo.com Unfortunately, lubrication is only a temporary fix because it won't last forever. John Caddy 09-16-04, 11:01 PM You got that right JohnZ! It lasted about 48 hours. Told my dealer today about the TimmyT/Delaware method - will schedule it for next week. I complained to the on-line Cadillac customer service about the way the service center dealt or didn't deal with my sunroof noise. They said they would update me weekly as to the possible fix for the roof. Well, they neglected to contact me on the third week so I got back in touch with them.
Originally for my disatisfaction they offered me free oil changes and tire rotaions for a year. I have free oil changes for three years through my dealership and the ones they were offering were only good for a year so I told them I couldn't use them and would like something else. I ended up getting my full "Onstar" service extended for another year after my free year ends. About a $420 value! ...Originally for my disatisfaction they offered me free oil changes and tire rotaions for a year.
Lemmie get this straight. In order to make up for bad customer service, they offered you free tire rotations on a vehicle which CANNOT have the the tires rotated because they are different widths front and rear??? :cookoo: :histeric: Lemmie get this straight. Excactly! :banghead:
I told them that myself. I took another year of Onstar and ran. I don't use it much but it's a peace of mind thing for my wife who drives it most of the time. Samboosa 09-26-04, 09:02 AM for me the dealer actually openned the sunroof and installed some plastic pieces somewhere and changed the torx and lubricated.
was good for like 5 days. no creeks on normal bumps, only on high inclines.
but after the 5 days i can now hear it a bit on normal inclines. the dealer said they've been talking with the support and got instructions from them as they have a number of owners with the same problem. but he said this is not a final solution. and i will have to lubricate the sunroof at least with every service.
i am sort of cool with it at the moment.
they also fixed the rattle in the door. thanks to the tips on these forums ;) The fix from Dealer is still good (knock on wood) and its been almost a month. mastertech 10-06-04, 10:53 AM Being a service technician at a Detroit area Cadillac dealership, I will tell you that we do not have a definite fix this issue yet. Please keep in mind that the dealership did not design or assemble these fine vehicles, and MOST of us have a sense of pride that demands we do our best to fix these issues as they arise. As with any new product, however, there always have been (and always will be) problems that leave us scratching our heads for a few.... we don't have the time like service engineers to research a single issue on a single car, as we are trying to make a check like everyone else. I try to spend a few minutes a day on this forum sharing any info I find, and trying to help out the average tinkerer with a few tips. I am not the authority on any given subject, but I'm always happy to save someone from making my mistakes. That being said, I truly enjoy this forum, and I hope more technicians and engineers will share any info they have to make all of our days a little easier! JamesMarsh 10-06-04, 12:55 PM I guess I really shouldn't be visiting this forum because I am just now noticing this creeking sound near my Ultravision - middle right hand side. It goes away when I turn the radio on :). In my case it seems to be related to the recent cooler weather here in NY. It's a large piece of glass which is most likely reacting to the weather. That being said, it doesn't bother me too much, but I will bring it up with the dealer when I take the car in for service. Perhaps a lube or some other fix like retorquing is in order or maybe a solution will be found by then. Before it got colder (40s) the roof was as tight as a drum - no sounds whatsoever. This is a demo which I bought last month. Production date is 11/03. It's got around 7500 miles. Otherwise it's a fantastic vehicle. No other complaints (except for the exceedingly bad standard radio speakers - truly horrible). Hoping to upgrade the speakers when XM is available??! In my younger days I had what I considered to be the dream job. I represented a field service force to the design and manufacturing engineering folks for a major computer manufacturer. That was back when computers were bigger than cars and as mechanical. We fought for what we called RAS (Reliability, Availability and Servicability). I wanted to do that ever since I worked in my fathers garage and wondered how some idiot dreamed up the access path to check the master cylinder on what I believe to be a 1955 olds. It was obvious that the idiot who designed this never had anything more than a beer can opener in ihis hand.
When I look at what it takes to change a bulb in the front bumper of an SRX, what the local Dealers people probably had to go thru in order to straighten out the front fenders on my SRX and the grief you guys are experiencing due to the design escape on the sunroof I am reminded that there still is a need for representing the practical side of life to the parts of life dominated by engineers. John Caddy 10-14-04, 01:47 PM Well Little Red's been in the shop for 16 days now (this time) getting the sunroof "fixed" - they've replaced the glass and the rails - now are waiting on new rails from a new manufacturer... no ETA. According to the dealership and Cadillac customer service, there is no known cure for the creeking roof yet. I will live with the creeking noise and the free extra year of OnStar they gave me for my troubles until they have a definite fix for the problem. Then I will take it in.
Good luck............. Not sure if this is 100% , but a salesman at a Cadillac dealer in Phoenix told me that his service manager just infomed him that Cadillac just announced a RECALL on the Ultraview! For all of us putting up with this annoying problem this could be great news as they hopefully have a sure fix .
:) compfan03 10-17-04, 06:13 PM Can anyone confirm this ultraview recall? Isn't there someplace on the web that posts this info. I am going in for service this week and it would be great to have the info if available. Thanks. It's been exactly 2 months since dealer fixed my creeking sunroof. Silent for 2 months and now the creek is back, but not as loud or as often. We have a new sound: a constant "squeeeeeek" now coming from the roof! Could it be the cooler weather? Who knows!!!! My service manager confirmed that they haven't received any fix for the sunroof yet.
samidj, I am sure it's the weather. The weather where I live is very hot in the day time and quite cold in the night. My creaks are night-time creaks :coolgleam :hmm:
This is such a strange problem with certain Ultraview's . Mine is in the shop now for 3 day's and the creak is still coming through! To the Cadillac dealer's credit they are trying everything to pin point the problem and they do not want to let the SRX out of the shop until they find a fix.
An associate of mine purchased a late build '04 with Ultraview and has no creaking. I think it has something to do with the Dupont adhesive used to install the ultraview. Yes, they are glued onto the frame... Mine is a late build 04 (April 26/04 to be exact, the 05's start up May 17/04) and, yeah, it occcasionaly "creeks & squeeks". Don't know if it's worth complaining to Cadillac Customer Service again! Whatever my dealer did 2 months ago was only a temporary fix cause the creeking is back sporadically.
I think I'll just wait a while & see if Cadillac will come up with a permanent fix for this annoyance felt by many of us!!! Those of you complaining about your creaking panorama sunroof should send a letter to Webasto in Rochester Hills MI, GM Zone Rep and the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Lansing MI. Webasto designed and manufactures the modular panorama sunroof. At least you are the first on the block with a modular panorama sunroof from GM! There are reports that Webasto is having problems with the assembly fasteners loosening. Samboosa 11-15-04, 03:43 PM they do not want to let the SRX out of the shop until they find a fix.
Then you could be waiting for a looooooong time. tiranga008 11-15-04, 06:23 PM Guys, got a call from my dealer this afternoon. They are going to try out "new bolts/screws". Apparently, that's been recommended by GM as a fix for the sun roof creaking and rattling - though the dealer rep went on great lenghts about it "not" being a recall - I think they have at last found a solution. So, all you guys suffering this terrible noise - go back to your dealerships and ask about the new bolts/screws for the ultra sun roof.
I will post my experiences here after I get the SRX back.

Torx? Dealer changed those in mine too. No use.
All was directed by GM. tiranga008 11-17-04, 01:23 PM Yes, the same... so, nothing really changed. However, GM has acknowledged the issue - I saw a "document" from GM describing the problem at the dealership - squeaking and rattling of the sun roof - goes away when the sun roof is opened and closed.. comes back after the car is driven for a few miles.
According to that problem document, the next step is to change the arm(s) that move the sun roof. They have ordered the part and it would take about 2 weeks .. so, they gave me the car back and when the arm(s) gets here it will replace the existing arm(s).
Again, will post the results when the arm is replaced...
Cheers :hmm: I've been in several SRX's and I don't remember the creaking in any of them unless we went up a steep incline. Our driveway has a steep beginning and the roof would creak but that's the only time it would happen. If your roof creaks even when driving on rough roads service should be able to tighten or adjust something. Mesawoman 11-29-04, 08:35 PM I had the same problem. Last week they "fixed it" and the noise is gone. The service manager told me about the bolt thing too. I was skeptical at first, but a week later, the squeeking is really gone. syrob@MSN.COM 11-30-04, 08:01 AM I heard a rumor that GM has put a hold on the roof at the factory, they are not installing them any more. Can anyone confirm this?
SYROB JDelorean_srx 11-30-04, 09:56 PM I finally had to let them have it. I was SOO tired of the near-geiger counter sounding clicking/rattle from the passenger-side front.
So, when I dropped it off for the free oil change, I told them "Whatever it takes..", gave them the details from this forum, the tech bulletin, webasto tech's, etc..
Then, they had an XLR waiting for me - Of course I told them to take their time, "..It's more important to do a "quality" job.." Hell, I was hoping they couldn't fix it for days... :hmm:
Before closing I got the call - "..srx was ready, owner wanted to go home, could he have his car back.." :rant2:
I'll be darned if the clicking/rattle wasn't fixed! :shhh:
Comment on the service paperwork:
Tightened front-right corner bolts, added insulation, test drove, no rattle.
Even had full tank of gas & a polish & buff. (I almost felt guilty, cause the XLR was bone-dry for gas..) :worship: ywrotk2006 12-01-04, 07:25 PM I thought my creek was from the sun visor. Nope, dealer told me an hour ago, it was the famous roof. said they realigned and lubricated it. will see how good the fix is. I made the mistake of having the dealer check out a minor rattle in the sunroof. they also ordered the above parts and now the thing rattles worse, almost every bump. I dont believe techs know how to fix these rattle problems. Ihave a bad rattle in my door which hasnt been fixed on 2 dealer trips and i am going to disasssemble the door myself tiranga008 12-09-04, 11:59 AM Ok... the "arms" are on national back order... will get them when we get them... Believe it or not, even with the cold/damp weather here in Canada, the creeky sunroof has been extremely quiet. The odd creek here and there, nothing like the noises for the past 6 weeks.
Checked with my dealer here and they said some sort of permanent fix is due very shortly.
Hopefully the New Year will bring an end to all these noisy, creeking sunroofs!! strindl 12-09-04, 06:57 PM Hopefully the New Year will bring an end to all these noisy, creeking sunroofs!!

I haven't seen a lexus with a sunroof this size.
I have seen the so called moonroof on the X5 but it is nothing like the SRX. First it comes in 2 pieces not one large piece of glass. And second as it retracts it actually only goes a little more than half the way and stops. Its like they couldn't handle making one large sunroof so they thought lets combine 2 small ones we're used to make that won't rattle. A year late, but better late then never. Cadillac didn't put this car out on the market knowing that the sunroof would make a noise just as Lexus does. It just happens that the sunroof made by "Webasto" (Not GM) who makes both OEM and after market sunroofs for car makers world wide (Including Lexus) has a flaw in some of the roofs. While this roof is very new to the market it was devloped and made by probably one of the biggest makers of sunroofs installed in new cars. syrob@MSN.COM 12-10-04, 02:15 PM Sorry, the blame goes to GM for not testing or not watching the store...

Of course GM is still responsible to make the product acceptable to the consumer. My point was that the sunroof comes from a source that makes millions of sunroofs for cars of nearly ever make. So they have a very good track record for making reliable sunroofs. It just so happens that some of the ones installed in the SRX have a problem which I'm sure will be found and fixed over time. GM has a problem with a product that came from one of companies that supply products for their cars.
How can you say that GM didn't test the sunroof? Or are you trying to say that GM knew of the problem and put it on the car anyway? I don't believe GM or Cadillac knowingly installed a product in their cars that will give them a problem. Every auto maker wants to make a car that people like and doesn't have a problem with it at all. Nothing is perfect.
I'm not defending GM here. My SRX is the first GM product I've ever owned. I just don't think for a second that any other auto maker does things any different than GM. As with any other issue on any other car, sometimes things just happen. A part fails, a design is not as good as it could be, etc. Life goes on. strindl 12-10-04, 06:22 PM I don't believe GM or Cadillac knowingly installed a product in their cars that will give them a problem. Unfortunatly, I believe GM does exactly that. The rear differential whine for example, has been a problem since the 2003 model year on the CTS, and they are still building them with the defective part at the beginning of the 2005 model year. They MUST know that. There is a fundamental difference in corporate philosophy between GM, and Lexus for example.
Lexus had a few problems in early production year 2004 with a vibration in the drive shaft of their GX470 model. They were made aware of the problem, and fixed it in later 04 vehicles. My GX has a build designation of 9700G, and they started the 04 production at 9700A. That means Lexus has made enough running improvements during the 2004 model year to change the model designation 7 times. GM doesn't do that, they just keep churning out the defective ones, model year after model year.
The SRX Sunroof has been a problem for over a year, and only now are we hearing about a possible fix for it. ywrotk2006 12-15-04, 08:02 PM whatever the dealer did to my roof, only worked for about 30 min. it rattles a bit worse, maybe because it's colder now. I guess it'll be a big announcement, in this community at least, when the final fix comes out. i checked out another caddilac forum, an ex-BMW owner says his BMW always had the rattle, and plenty of Armor-all will take care of it, and he thinks it's normal due to the tight fit between the rubber and the glass. GM did make changes as the 2004 was made. That's why the earlier built cars have more issues with them.
If you are the one with the problem it never gets fixed fast enough. For the past 2-3 weeks, especially since the temperatures here in eastern Canada have plummeted, my sunroof has been absolutely silent. Not a squeek, creek or rattle (knock on wood!!). Somewhat strange, considering it's been an issue for the past 6 months of ownership.
One would think that along with the sub-zero temps one would experience more creeks & squeeks, especially driving over uneven, snow & ice covered roads. Yet, my SRX has been silent as a mouse.
I believe that the lower tire pressure (32 psi) in my winter tires (Pirelli Ice & Snow) has got to have something to do with the noisy sunroof; also the quality of the Pirelli's as opposed to the Factory Goodyears. What do you think?
I'm looking ahead to the spring, hopefully having a quiet 1st winter with my SRX, and hoping by then there will be a permanent fix for the sunroof.
Or maybe, I'll just leave my winter tires on and enjoy the car!! BTW, the SRX AWD is amazing on ice and snow! I've plowed thru piles of snow & ice without a problem. I live in the Chicagoland (Illinois) area and maybe the cold weather has something to do with the roof being silent now. Who knows? As for the tires, I have only tried them in the snow twice this year and I think the Goodyears are fine. Are they the best? Of course not but the way they perform now does not warrant shelling out the chunk of money on other tires in the hopes they perform better. GM did make changes as the 2004 was made. That's why the earlier built cars have more issues with them.
If you are the one with the problem it never gets fixed fast enough.
Exactly right. Looking at TSB's proves this to be true. Lots of problems early model years. Lots less currently. I bought a , GM certified, built after march
04' (may 04') specifically because of this.
Only complaint is one creek in moonroof when exiting driveway or turning at speed.Probably would've noticed it if I didn't read it here first.
Cadillac only behind Lexus in quality according to JD powers. 1st model year blues.

Real world can only be duplicated in real world conditions. A doctor once said to me " I only prescribe medication that has been out for 5-10 years" Do you think drug companies want a PHEN-PHEN or Vioxx drug in their lineup?? I'm using this analogy because on some things you can test all you want but until it gets used by the masses???????????
Largest production moonroof= Growing pains (or growing and shrinking pains with the weather :bonkers:) I thought I would resurrect this thread because my '04 SRX with UltraView developed the creaking and popping when driving up an incline at an angle.
I just got it back from the dealer and their diagosis was the headliner (NOT the sunroof), which they replaced. So far, it seems to have fixed the problem.
It seems that all of the discourse in this thread over sunroof design, supplier quality etc. doesn't apply for this particular problem. This is a relief since I think the UltraView is the single best feature of the SRX - and certainly the most unique.
Has anyone else had their creaking problem solved with the headliner? The dealer turned the repair around pretty quickly which indicates that there was probably a TSB from Cadillac. Anyone know? I know my dealer had removed the headliner to get at the Ultraview track, but I do not think anything was done with the headliner.
The creaking is pretty much fixed. I am up to 26,000 miles on our '04 ( Novemeber '03 build date) SRX and it just keeps getting better. I am thinking about trading it in for an '06 if the interior is vastly differnt then my '04 and if there are other significant changes. Otherwise, I will run this SRX into the ground !! Strunzo 06-22-05, 03:02 PM My 05 SRX had a slight rattle in the ultraview above the front passenger door. Took the car to the dealer ( 7215 miles) and it was repaired. Another noise of creaking can be hear from the RSE screen since few weeks ago. stlgasman 07-02-05, 01:29 PM Mine has started making a noise that appears to emanate on the passenger side neart the front. I would characterize it as a light noise similar to tapping ones fingernails on a hard surface. Is that what everyone else hearing (subjective)? Any fixes that work? I have 2005 SRX V8, build date is 06/2004 and I do have rattling noise from right side when sunroof is open every time I go over uneven road surface.
I went to the dealer and they took off sunroof (at least Service department manger told me so) and then reassembled everything back (just 4 bolts) and at the time of pickup they told me that everything was fixed and there is no rattling. I even test drove the car with service manager and it seemed that it was fixed but on my way back home just two blocks away from service dept. it started rattling again. I returned back and told the guy about it. Once again service dept. manager went back on the road with me and I was able to demonstrated him this rattling noise and he replied to me that there is nothing they can do about it at this point because mechanic checked everything and didn't find anything that could rattle up there even though they heard it and I gave them TSB number.
In my opinion City Cadillac dealership (Long Island City NYC Queens) has worst service department I've ever saw, so guys stay away from this dealership even though their prices very hard to beat but then again when you buy $60K car it's not just a car but tech support as well and Cadillac's tech support is far from being on the level, at least that was my experience so far on few dealerships. stlgasman 07-28-05, 03:35 PM Ok... the "arms" are on national back order... will get them when we get them...

Did it solve the problem? tiranga008 07-29-05, 12:51 PM Nope :( cesron7 07-29-05, 02:14 PM Here is what my dealer did for me, AND IT WORKED, I had very loud rattling noises above BOTH back doors, he took the headliner down above the doors, there are cables running the length of the glass, the cables were banging against the frame of the roof, now from here on I was not there to watch what he did for the fix, he did say he tied them together??? what that meant I do not know, but I will say this, he fixed it, it took about one hour, put the headliner back in place, and, no grease marks, this is just one reason I have been buying Cads from this dealer since 1982. cesron7 07-29-05, 02:21 PM One other thing, the teck also stated that he put sound deading material aganst the metal part of the roof next to where the cables run, hope this helps you people with the dealers that dont know what to do. SRX1701 07-29-05, 11:23 PM I had this same problem over the winter, I tried to lub what I could then it got warmer and the noicse went away. I am not really sure why? This is what the wifes has for a noise. I brought it in once and it was gone for several weeks, but it came back. JDelorean_srx 07-30-05, 07:31 PM I just got mine back.
The sound as I'd describe it was similar to a geiger-counter - or - as just described, tapping fingernails against glass.
The weather didn't seem to stop it or make it louder.
As this has been the 3rd repair, GM/Cadillac customer service was informed also. The car spent 4 days at the dealer - not being touched cause the duffuses at GM were on 2-week holiday. Once the dealer 'talked' with tech support, they had me come back to the dealer, to help them figure out what the noise was. The dealer put in close to 3 hrs. Then, GM had the car sent to Webasto tech center, about an hr. from the dealer. :rant2:
Webasto had the car just under 2 weeks, the work order wasn't complete when I picked up the car, but, here is a brief list of what was changed out. (Note: this was a mid-yr. build '04.)
a. Entire front glass
b. wind deflector - didn't get a good reason, other than they are making it different now.
c. sun shade - apparently there was a better one made, and currently being installed. (It does seem thicker than the 3mil thick pc of plastic/vinyl they use for the rear storage roll-up cover.)
d. insulation placed between headliner & metal where tracks are.
e. double sided tape
f. New reiforcement bars were added - apparently they weren't available for the '04's.
I'm waiting for the complete breakdown.
Driving home around town = so far no rattle. We'll see if this fix holds.

From what I can see, barring any loose bolts or brackets, the rubber gasket needs to move easily on the glass. Powdered graphite just might do the trick. I have the creaking sunroof so I'll let you folks know what happens.

I hear people saying it is the glass meeting the rubber along with that area being part of the structural integrity...or some say its wires hitting the roof, or the headliner. I know its not a loud sound, but once you NOTICE it.... it does get to be annoying. I would like to know exactly what the problem is before i start taking it to the dealer and having problems like some of you have described (headliner wont stay in place anymore because it has been to dealer many times) haha...thats no fun. stlgasman 01-09-06, 11:43 PM J Delorean srx is only one who seems to have a possible fix, but he hasn't posted in while. stlgasman 01-26-06, 11:58 PM Mine's heading back in to try and quiet the Ultraview. Love the vehicle; hate the squeaky, glorious, annoying, incredible ultraview roof. I hope somebody someday remedies that issue. It's all related to cold weather. As soon as the temps drop below 40 degrees mine starts to make the creaking/rattling noise again. Now that its warmer I have absolutely no noises from the Ultraview. The cold weather must cause the metal in the ultraview housing to expand/contract and then rub up against something to cause the noise. I have an issue with my 1996 Trans Am, where in the winter my front door rubs against the side panel when I open the door, it gets really bad and I have rubbing marks to prove it. Once again, once its 40+ degrees out the rubbing ceases to be an issue. Really kinda weird. Makes you wonder how much cold weather testing GM is doing for the body panels and such related to the expansion/contraction of the metal they use in our cars. jsportel 05-16-08, 02:54 PM ...chalk me up for the same issue. I am new to this forum but share many of the same problems . I live in Port Elgin Ontario Canada and bought my 04 SRX in Florida in Jan. 08 the noise you describe is identifeid in a TSB #06-08-67-012 The parts to fix this is cheap .....(40.00) but the time in the shop is what will give you a heart attack it was 12 hrs labour at 90.00 bucks an hour as they have to remove the roof liner and that is what takes the most time. My '06 SRX has this creaking sound too. sounds like two plastic panels rubbing together. It doesn't matter if it is cold or hot (32-90 degrees F). Seems to be worse when the sunshade is retracted. I have silicon lube sprayed all tracks and parts I can get to. seemed to have helped for a day or two.
Dealer says they found a TSB but did cite the number. They are ordering parts. I will report back when I have more info on fix or no fix.
At least they are making an effort to try and resolve this common problem. Luckily I still have some factory warranty left.
Rob Bill Brummett 06-01-08, 10:11 PM The problem is with the original design tracks for the Ultra-View. Had the same problems with my 04. After about 3 unsuccessful tries by the dealer to remedy the problem, they looked a little deeper and found that there was an "unpublicised" fix by GM. Involved totally replacing all of the tracks and clamps with a different design. After this mine is TOTALLY silent, warm or cold.
Ask your dealer to check this out. Bill:
Thank you for your reply. My dealer said he is ordering "parts". They should be in by the end of this week. I will print out your reply and take it with me and inquire what parts they ordered. When did you have your repair made? I wonder if the new design was implemented in the '06 and my creak is due to something else. I doubt it, but I am obliged to let them try their fix if it involves parts other than the tracks and clamps you mentioned.
Rob_L Bill Brummett 06-02-08, 05:04 PM Rob...
As best I recall, it was about a year ago. Mine is an '04. Thanks again for your reply. I will report back to this forum on my success, or failure to have this pesky noise eliminated.

I just got notice from my dealership that the parts they orders are in to hopefully fix this problem.
I will report back on any success... or failure.
The creak went away in this 90+ degree weather, but it came back last night when the temp went back down to mid 70's and I travelled over some bumpy roads.
