Have anybody had a strut to leak fluid? What would cause this?
Right front strut on 05 STS is leaking. Dealer said they could get to it on Thursday.

Strut leaks are not too common, but essentially the same as a shock fluid leak. A boot or seal has failed.

It may very well be a bad seal around the piston. This happens over time as the seal can wear and deteriorate. Also, struts can heat up, particularly at the seal interface. I have a rear strut on my '99 Deville that is leaking and will be replaced in the next week or two. The important thing is to always replace struts in pairs - both rear or both front - at a minimum. Usually, if one is worn enough to start leaking, it implies the rest may soon also require replacement. If it were me, I'd do all four.

Technically I believe that is a "shock", but regardless... if it is leaking then it is just bad.

No it is not a common failure.

Electronically controlled MacPherson struts in front, electronically controlled and/or air-assisted shocks in back.

Not to argue with you sub but an '05 STS is RWD and it does use a coil over shock in the front and shocks in the back.

It was a shock and dealer said it was defected. Car has less than 11,000 miles.

Failures are rare, but not unheard of.
Glad it is fixed.

2005 with only 11k? Get that car out and enjoy it!!!!:)
