I was fortunate enough to get a great deal on a mint, 91 STS last summer. With $2300 cash + $800 for brake lines I was on the road and the car only had 57,000 original miles.
I love this car but I am sure some of you know how hard it is to part with the cash when it comes to repairs so this is about making me feel better.
My mechanic, whom I trust, has just given me this $1600 list of repairs to be done this week.

(4) H rates touring tires (General Altimax HP?)
Monroe Sensa trac for both front struts
A new power steering rack & pinion
full alignment

I was ready for all of it but the power steering. The tires had dead spots from sitting (little old lady had it prior to me) and they were wearing from bad alignment. The struts had started to leak and were getting soft.
I have accepted that I am losing my CCR struts and I am looking forward to the, almost, new ride and control feel I will have but tell me that it's worth it. My wife is understanding and likes the car but lack our enthusiasm and finds humor in the fact that my eyes glaze over when someone new ask about my car.

Lou....I'll jump in with a review of some tires for you. I too was looking at the General Altimax. I definitely needed a new set. I searched and researched for 2 months before I decided on the Toyo Versado LX's. So far (2200 miles) I'm quite impressed. Very quiet tire, H rated, handled a few downpours recently, and have noticed no give in bold cornering. What's funny is that a few people have noticed the look of the tire. There is no comparison between the Michelin Symettrey and the Versado. This tire has a look that gets noticed. I found my 235/60/16's online for $103per, $50 for shipping, and $22/per from a local shop for mounting & balancing. I believe it was $546 total. Cheapest in the DC Metro area was $660.
Reviews on the General have been very good as have the Versado. I love the look and feel of the Versado. Good luck.

rabrew1953,
Thanks for the review! I did go with the General Altimax HP. I only have a about 200 mi on them but on dry highway and in rain they handle very well. As for noise I am very happy. I will test the dealers integrity today, one tire has a rippled sidewall.
After having my 91 sts on the computer I am told that I have a bad O2 sensor (one of four). It has started to run rough. I am planning on doing this myself, any thoughts?

Lou,
Good to hear you found a good set of tires. As for the O2 sensor well I'm a firm believer in doing it yourself. I've purchased the Helm's catalog for my STS and along with the help from these guys on this forum it has saved me a lot of money. You may want to check the Helm's website but '91 is a ways back. Good luck. Check this forum out. All of these guys are quite helpful.

I did both upstream O2 sensors myself. No problem other than some burnt knuckles.
I did learn that with my series 1 OBD it takes two full driving cycles to let the computer relearn driving habits. It ran like hell until the car went through it and now it is 99% back to normal. The last one percent is just my being hyper sensitive to everything after putting so much into the car.
I have one more weak spot to maintain for this summer and it is the plug wires. Nothing obvious yet but they may be original so they are due.
