When using the Porter Cable to polish your car how much pressure should you use? I am using it for the first time and in the videos that I watched on Autogeek.net it looked like he was using quite a bit of pressure, when I put much pressure on mine the pad doesn't spin.

Can anyone shed some light on this for a real novice?

Not too much pressure - the weight of the buffer does the work - just keep it moving and allow the pad to spin. Start on a 2-square foot area on the hood or trunk lid to get a feel for pressure.......and be careful if you're using anything other than the finest cut swirl remover at first - you don't want to go through the clearcoat. If you watch the DVD again you'll see that he's controlling the buffer, not leaning into it. Also, fool with speed control - there are tips in the DVD.

Thanks Sub, that's kind of what I thought but I wasn't sure.

I have about 3/4 the way through polishing the car at the moment - it's quite a bit of work - more time consuming than anything - but the car is looking really nice - almost hard to believe it is 10 years old.

I'll post some pics when I get finished.

For some more real punishment lay on a coat of Wolfgang synthetic wax/sealant followed by a microfiber towel hand-buffed coat of Pinnacle Souveran Carnauba wax.

hcvone - thanks for the link. Good info there, it never ceases to amaze me, the amount of information that is available out there - all you have to do is look for it.

We talked on the telephone and belonged to Hot Rod Clubs. We worked part time during high school summer vacation and college semester breaks as a grease monkey in a local gas station. We spent small fortunes on magic potions and snake oil and blew up a lot of engines. We learned a lot in the school of hard knocks and got speeding tickets.

I get tickets with the internet, and I got them before the internet too :banghead:
