: Whats the fastest

I was just wondering what is the fastest everyone has gotten their STS up to? I was on a remote highway in Texas and got mine up to 100mph and she was just as smooth as if I was doing 50-60 mph. I own a 2005 V-6

Do you have a V-6/8? How was the ride at 125? I backed off of it when I hit 100.

I don't know what mine will top out at but going up a 6% grade I accellerated from 110 km(70 mph) to 200 km(125 mph) snd still had plenty of gas petal left. I backed off cause I had an exit coming up in an 1/8 mile and had to make 2 lane changes

There are many places in the US that do this too. One of the main roads I take to work is Paseo del Norte, 3-lane road with 60 MPH limit. Every few months LEO stand on an overpass and get people with LIDAR. Folks who get nabbed at 100+ MPH go straight to jail, and their car is confiscated.

I've only had my STS up to about 100, in an area where the speed limit is 75.

Drove my Vette to Las Vegas last year, and took it to 175 MPH on US-95 in Nevada. That is a barren, flat stretch of highway, light traffic, and you can see forever. There was no traffic out on the road in front of me when I did this.

I very rarely drive more than 10 MPH over the limit. I've only had one moving violation in the last 32 years, and that was about 5 years ago.

Hit 110 heading north on I-35 in my 05 STS. Smooth as silk. Still had more pedal but my exit came up pretty quick. New tires, fuel injection flush, and fresh oil change. That was the fastest I have ever gone. I want to go faster now. Thinking of a cold air intake to help my cause.
Peace.

HUH? Last time I drove the 401, in 1991 I was doing 150 and lots of cars were passing me.

Out here inthe land of the REDNECKS(Alberta) they sieze vehicles too. In fact here they sieze snd sell the cars before you are even convected. It really pissed one guy who was found NOT guilty, his car had aready be sold. But Alberta is rapidly become a Fascist Police State. HAIL STELMACH.

Top speed is limited to the tire rating by the computer, not the engine capability. some rental units have a lower top speed cut off.

So if I replace my S-tires with V-tires, then someone can update the computer and the car can go faster? Is this a dealer-only ability?

If your car came with "S" rated tires...you are limited to about 110/112MPH.

The dealer or someone with a TECH ll "COULD" raise your speed limiter, but because of liability issues, I don't think you will ever find a dealer that will actually raise it for you.

2008 STS V6: 125MPH at which time the speed limiter virtually shut the engine down.
Asked dealer about upgrading my V rated tires and readjusting the speed limiter accordingly.
The answer was a flat no due to liability issues.
The way the engine was pulling at 124.99 MPH it sounded like to could go on forever. But I'll never know.

Last thing I need at that speed is the car thinking the tires are slipping.

OK all well its about time someone asked about topspeed. I have hit a speed limiter twice in my car.. it stopped me at 142 mph in my V8. It just says top speed limited to 142 and the needle bounces. I had the same thing in my Lexus LS at 149 mph (indicated 153). I asked my dealer why I was not allowed to hit 155 mph and he just shook his head and said "Sorry, Cady will not look into any speed related issues above 70 mph".

So I guess I just keep trying till the car thinks conditions are perfect.

By the way both times were on a 4 mile long straight highy with no traffic in either dirrection. No danger to anyone but myself.

It won't do you any good to keep trying and it don't matter what the conditions are.

If it is speed limited to 142...then THATS IT.
You ain't a gonna go any faster unless you modify the ECM. :D

I understand what you are saying...I think.
Mine used to do the same thing.
I had two that I hit the speed limiters on.

One said "SPEED LIMITED TO 130MPH"
The other one, (which I have now)..said "SPEED LIMITED TO 123MPH"
To change it, I had to go into the Engine Control Computer and change the settings.
I raised the limiter to 180...so...in all practicality it now has no limiter, as the car will not run anywhere near that fast.
I have only had it to 143, and based on that, and how it was still pulling at that time...I would GUESS that it will now top out at a little over 150.

I nail it and at about 100, I start to pull away but when I hit 120 the limiter kicks in WTF!
I need to have this fixed! Where?

Depending on your year model....
Probably the best way is to take it to someone that does custom tunes.
You can also get the software from HPTuners or EFI Live and do it your self.

Two suggestions.......... if you want to get the limiter changed go to a tuner. I'm in NE Ohio and take my vette to a tuner who can do magic. Forget about going to GM they can only do very little.

Second suggestion........ high speeds should only be done on a track. And there are plenty of opportunities all over. Many different sports car clubs would love to have you "race" with them...... they need the registration fee. You can buy time at most tracks in the country. For less then $100 you can find an event that will allow you all day to play.

Somewhere in one of these posts it says if you press and hold the traction button for more than 6 seconds it will disable the limiter, along with the stabilizer, I have not tried this however I just remember reading about it

I think around 110-115 here....... in passing car situations (my previous '05 STS V8). It just happens, you get there so fast and so smoothly. I'm learning a lot from the tires rating and all vs. speed vs. road, etc. I am oblivious to these factors. Kinda scary.

It may disable the traction control and Stabilitrac, but I would be be willing to make a small wager, that it "WILL NOT" disable the speed limiter.

it is the cops discretion to give you a ticket or take you to jail and impound your car. :stirpot:

At first - please excuse my bad english !!

That was only a Topspeed-test, at 187mph the highway is very narrow. But the STS was great at this speed, no differece to a BMW, Mercedes or Audi in control and handling. Great Performance for half the price than a german car.
My normal crusing speed on the highway is about 100 - 110 mph, that is a little bit higher then the average-speed on german highways.

I have had mine in the 140's but canít remember the exact number. I know that as soon as I got over 135 it sounded like my sun roof was about to suck right off the top of the car. I had plenty of pedal left but was afraid of the sun roof. Anyone else had this problem? I would think that 180+ would actually pull it out of the seal?

I've been in our STS4 at 130 MPH for a short spell on the highway and it seemed fine. Very little wind noise. Since that car is geared so low there was more hum from the engine than anything.

I've had the STS-V up to 140 MPH on a track and it was also very quiet. Just supercharger whine. :cool2:

So last night coming home on the "Autobon" (in case any prok reads these posts) I was doing about 95mph and all of the sudden a Mustang tails me and passes me (shoulda been paying attention so he couldn't have done that). Then had to show him NO Mustand beats an STS. caought up to him passed him and kept going. got up to 140mph twice before having to slow down for curves. Well just guess got to go out to the desert for a straight stretch to see the true top speed. Never gone much abouve 110-115 before but damn, need to slow down big even for slight turns.

Big Whoop!! In 1960 I drove a stock 1960 Buick LaSabre Two Dr Hardtop with two passengers from Springfield, Ohio on Rt 40/I 70 to downtown Indianapolis at mostly 120+ mph (less that two hous travel time). On the return I was arrested by a local bull when I slowed down to 95 mph to pass a fuel truck. I have certified witnesses.

So, 120 MPH today ain't no big deal in the Cadillac STS or STS-V.
