So for instance you may have 18x9 in rims in the front and 18x9.5 in the back, or maybe even bigger diameter rims... Catera V 07-21-04, 01:48 AM The reason this is done is to add traction to the rear and provide more understeer on powerful RWD cars. I'm getting a staggered set of wheels. 18x8.5 in the front and 18x9.5 in the back. miscreant 07-21-04, 03:23 AM Cool. Devil_concours 07-21-04, 04:51 AM What size tires? 245/40/18 in the front and 275/35/18 in the rear miscreant 07-21-04, 09:59 AM 245/40/18 in the front and 275/35/18 in the rear Great choice. Let us know how it works out. KadKat 07-21-04, 06:08 PM Call me stupid, but how do you rotate? I'm not familiar with this type of tire/wheel sizing. :hmm: elwesso 07-21-04, 06:23 PM You just ahve to rotate sizes... You will have to buy tires sooner (no even wear) but who cares about that..... No one keeps tires over 20,000 miles or 2 years..... right?? :) j-w 07-21-04, 11:05 PM What does it mean? I saw that some 5 series wheels are staggered. I think all bimmers with sport package have a staggered setup. And fwiw, you do not rotate the tires. RobertCTS 07-22-04, 06:34 PM I think Corvette is the same. Hey, you make compromises for performance. It's a trade off. Even the direction tires like I have do not rotate in the normal manner. What ever makes you happy. Keep in mind, rim width should be the same as thread width. dkozloski 07-22-04, 08:46 PM For what it's worth, in the motor racing fraternity, stagger refers to the difference in rear wheel circumference that is adjusted by tire selection/air pressure to enable a race car to negotiate a circular course gracefully without the benefit of a rear-end differential. Adjustments in this area were pioneered by the late, great, Ralph Earnhardt the Sportsman series champion and father of the late, great Dale Earnhardt. newton 07-23-04, 01:57 AM would staggered wheels offer an advantage when looking for snowtires?it would seem to me that you may get a bit more traction from behind... but then again too much traction from behind and not enough from the front may be bad in snowy conditions(NY really as thats where im talking about) would it make a difference with handling at all? any thoughts on this? Devil_concours 07-26-04, 07:02 PM hey miscreant i have another question before i buy, will 38mm offset work with the cts? darrelld 07-26-04, 11:21 PM The 04 Shelby Cobra Concept also uses staggered wheels. http://www.intellichoice.com/autoshow/showVehicle.cfm/vehicle/132 terstheman 07-27-04, 12:46 AM the cobra has 275's on all four corners... the corvette actually has diffrent wheel sizes too! corvette: Tires / Wheel Size P245/45ZR17 Rear Tires / Wheel Size P275/40ZR18 gothicaleigh 07-27-04, 06:43 AM would staggered wheels offer an advantage when looking for snowtires?it would seem to me that you may get a bit more traction from behind... but then again too much traction from behind and not enough from the front may be bad in snowy conditions(NY really as thats where im talking about) would it make a difference with handling at all? any thoughts on this? A wider wheel isn't going to help in winter conditions. In fact, the effect may be just the opposite of what you expect. Many people go to a smaller tire in the winter to help with traction and control. | |
