What around town gas mileage should I expect from a 1987 Eldorado with the 4.1 V8 engine. The car has 35,000 miles on it. I get around 16 MPG, driving it gently.

If this is too low, what should I check or replace to improve the mileage? Other than the water pump and air filter/oil changes, nothing has ever been replaced on the car.

Thanks,

PeteC

clean the TB and EGR tubes. use search and use keyword "cleaning TB" or something similar.

go the auto parts store and buy some small rubber vacuum line. replace everything you can.

replace air filter with similar paper type. go ahead and give it a new rotor/cap, wires, pcv valve. check the egr valve.

16mpg isn't bad around town however. you should be in the low 20s on the freeway.

oh yeah, and drain and refill your coolant! this is extremely important that you do this! the 4.x aluminum motor are really picky about this! Use 50/50 green silicate stuff and DISTILLED water. disconnect the lower rad hose and drain it all. go to wal mart or whever has it, and pick up 2 tubes of bars leak golden seal. put 2 tubes in the empty rad. now fill your system back up with 50/50. now you're good for another 30k/2yrs. good luck bro.

Thanks, I will start checking those items.

I had already taken care of the cooling system, thanks to the recommendation on this forum.
