You have probably also heard horror stories about BMW and Ford/Lincoln, Mercedes, Honda/Accura; the list goes on.

With attention to scheduled maintenance items, there are Northstars in daily service clocking over 300,000 miles without major engine repairs.

There are other Northstars with failed headgaskets at less than 100,000 miles. Scheduled maintenance is 75% of the difference.

Mine has yet to put me to walking.

The big item is coolant. If it has not been done, consider draining and refilling with 50/50 Dex-Cool and distilled water. I do not flush the cooling system as that will loose control of the desired 50/50 mixture and introduce water with unknown mineral content. Also add the GM coolant supplement tablets OR Barsleak Gold powder.

The serpentine accessory belt and the water pump belt can put you to walking. Replace them at your convenience. Be sure the spring-loaded belt tensioners are operating properly.

My plugs and ignition wires are original at 130,000 miles. My engine starts as well and pulls as strong today as it did in 1998. If it ain't broke....

Drive it and enjoy!!!

I had my 88 toyota 4x4's timing chain replaced at 200K for preventative maintenance. They screwed up a chain guide and had to rebuild the Yo.

No one touches my Eldo unless it needs it.
