I just changed the oil for an elderly neighbor of mine, it's a 98 malibu with the 3.1 engine, where the heck is the odometer mileage display, the speedo area shows a trip meter but that's all,the owners manual is no help either,
thanks for any help.

Is it digital? There is probably a button somewhere that switches it between trip and actual odometer.

No,it's not digital,I forgot to mention before that there isn't even a provision on speedo area for mileage reading, just a trip meter.

Actually maybe I answered too fast, most of stuff is standard, but I will check out for a button somewhere, the readout is possibly digital.

It is digital. My friend's Malibu has a button you can push to change it from Trip to Mileage. I forget if it the button is on the steering wheel or a stick on the dash.

Different vehicle, but in my F150 you push a stalk that sticks out of the upper right instrument panel lens to change from total to trip (and reset).

I still haven't had any luck finding mileage, I tried malibuowners.com,
no luck, maybe it involves programming buttons ?, It's more of a pita now
then anything. Thanks

find the tripometer reset button, and just tap it, it should toggle the trip/odometer. I think thats how our silverado works.

Look for the black button on the instrument cluster (as others have stated). A quick push should toggle the trip meter to the odometer. Holding the button 'down', while on the trip meter, should reset it to zero. (and if all else fails, read the owners manual again, it's got to be in there somewhere)

Creeker, you may want to PM DopeStar156, I don't know where he's been lately but I'm almost certain he used to have that exact same car.
