: Standing Mile

I was watching Supercars Exposed and they went to the "Texas Mile" to try to hit 200mph.

2 Questions...
Are there otherplaces (preferably west coast) to do this?
Has anyone done it? If so what sort of speed can the V hit?

I think I saw a similar event at the Salt Flats in Utah but I dont know how hard it would be to get out there to do something like that?

The V1 hits a top speed of 163 mph stock (drag limited), more if you got mods. I'm not sure about the V2 though...anybody else know?

V2 did 163 in the Top Gear episode at the salt flats, ZR1 176 and a Challenger SRT8 150.02 (just watched that episode again today) I'd imagine the Texas mile has much better speeds, being asphalt and not salt!

'Cadillac's own testing has resulted in a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.9 seconds, and powertrain engineer Dave Mikels says that he is "confident that you guys [members of the media] will beat our time, since we ran our testing pretty conservatively." Cadillac has run the quarter-mile in 12.0 seconds at 118 mph. What's more, the CTS-V will not be speed-limited: the 2009 Cadillac CTS (http://www.automobilemag.com/am/2009/cadillac/cts/index.html)-V with automatic transmission will reach 175 mph, while the manual-transmission model will, according to Mikels, reach a breathtaking 191 mph.'

Well... as a V1 owner I was interested if anyone thought it would top 150mph. Seems reasonable since the Challenger hit with similar power on the salt flats.

I really want to do this on my next vacation. Maybe I can wait till my sabbatical and hopefully have a cam/LPE heads and intake by then!

I think there is a video on you tube where a v1 hits 163 or 164. It took a while for those last 2 or 3 mph.

Did you read the thread title? Do you really think the cars can reach their top speed in a standing mile? If the top speed on a geo metro is 115mph do you really think it will do much more then 60-70 in the first mile? Top speeds are measured on 2+mile banked circle tracks or many miles of open straight. Top gear got the Veyron up to 253mph, in a 5mi straight at a VW test track. Can we get a copy and paste with a tiny bold section of relevance next time?

Yea I was wondering if there was any other place that did standing mile without that kind of competition. I was just hoping to hit 150. Maybe I need to start making friends w/ the highway patrol and see if we can set up an event and get them to close off a section of highway out in the desert (also done on Supercars Exposed).

There is a place in NC that does it at an old Air Force Base.

Out west just find a stretch of road.

WOW. Take a :chill: man. Do you really think people care to be patronized by multiple sarcastic a$$ rhetorical questions? I asked the question so the reply DID have relevance. At least OldRoadDawg posted a comment with positive information. Jeez...:cookoo:

I think that if you changed the gears in the Geo Metro it could easily top out in a mile, it might not be 115mph but you could top it out in a mile. :D

Stealth has always got some nifty graphic illustrations (looks like the V2 would hit just under 170 in the mile):

Maxton, North Carolina (The Maxton Mile). The organization's website http://www.ecta-lsr.com/

This year's schedule http://www.ecta-lsr.com/?page_id=69

Easy access... less than 1/2 hour from I-95.

A side note: This is held at the WW2 airfield specially built for the training of glider pilots, tow pilots and 82nd Airborne cadre for the D-Day invasion. A lot of history here!

My Metro (2001 3-cyl) is only good for ~95 (in a 2.5 mile stretch, with a tailwind and on slight downhill). :suspense:

If I added a fart can to the exhaust and a really big wing, maybe it would make up the difference. :ill:

How you'd like to do 180+ mph--with a State Police escort? Unfortunately, you have to have a Corvette. Our annual toys for Tots run in Atlantic City attracts more than 800 vettes. The State Police close down the Atlantic City Expressway for 10 miles and then let us go at it. I've reached more than 170 and I know at least one guy hit 183. I can't find his Utube video, but here's one with a guy and his son who hit 163.

Think they'd let me in if I'm running a C5-R motor????

That's actually pretty impressive. I had an '86 GTI when I was a kid and spanking new, that car would hit 98 mph in about ten miles of straight, flat down hill road. I'd be stunned if a geo would really do 95 except off a cliff -- unless it had a REALLY BIG wing, that is.

Their site doesn't have safetey requirements. Do you need a cage or anything weird to do the standing mile??

I once hit 147 by accident... I hit redline in 4th and went for 5th and after a bit realized that redline in 4th was way faster than I should be going so I looked down went oh shit and shut 'er down. Was stable and it came up FAST after the 4-5 shift cause I wasn't in 5th that long.

Yes, you do need a cage if your car will go faster than 135mph (I think) in the mile. I wanted to do this and called one of the tech guys. I thought the V might be exempt because it has a steel roof, etc. That was not the case, though.

I've seen that done. but on the third run.

A guy qualified for his 125 mph license, then his street license at 130. then dropped the hammer at 172 on his third run (N/A 434 SBC 2nd generation Camaro). The officials informed him of the cage and other safety requirements, should he desire to continue. :tisk:

I was thinking about doing this, but using my truck for the first run to get the 125 mph license and then switching to the V.

A TT C6 Z06 at the LSX Shootout last year was kicked out after a 7 second run with a bone stock interior. I think they made their point though.
