I went to the first Friday night car show of the year in Downers Grove last night. Here are some of the cars I saw. None of them were trailer queens and all got there under their own power. None of the pictures are fantastic as it is hard to get a good angle and a shot without anyone walking in front of you.

I am friends with the son of the owner of the IROC. I cannot remember exactly what year it is but he is the original owner and the mileage on the dash is correct. The car is a good as new.

The big Buick later down was ridden in by FDR back in the day. Pretty cool piece of history.

Some more stuff. This show is very large, taking up all of downtown Downers Grove. This is just one of the side streets, not even the main drag or the parking lots.

And I saved the best for last. I met up with Elias and Nicole and he introduced me to some other local Caddy fans. I pulled my car up after a few spaces opened and had a nice chat with them. Low and behold, someone pulled up with a clone of my car. Same year, model, engine and only 850 more miles than mine. His was black and in excellent condition.

Elias took the Fleetwood home (before I got any good pictures of it) and returned later with the Marauder. I managed to get a great picture of it in the streetlights of the parking lot that makes it look even more evil than normal.

Some of the night pictures are not so hot though. I had a hard time getting my camera to focus on the right areas. I had a tripod and had the shutter set to 6 seconds so exposure is good but the focus is out of whack a lot.

Boy, that Lotus 23 sure brought back memories. A very good friend of mine, Frank Monise, very successfully campaigned one of those in southern California. He went on to win So Cal SCCA championship in 1969 for BRE, Pete Brock's highly succesful racing effort using Datsum (Nissan) 2000 roadsters and later 210 coupes. He continued to be very competitive in Datsun powered Lolas on through the seventies and eighties. Frank passed away in 2004 but continues to hold a very respected place in SCCA racing.

My buddies and I took my friend's brother's 92 Camaro down to the local drag last night and I saw a few beauties. 1978 Eldorado Biarritz, 850Ci BMW, '69 Z28, etc etc. We were only there for a few, but my mind was blown when I saw that 850Ci. I have blurry pics, will upload later.

Later has arrived:

Here's the Camaro we took. It is in MAGNIFICENT shape for a '92. It's basically a garage queen that gets driven (very carefully mind you), in summer time, unless it looks like it's gonna rain. During the winter, it sits in the 3rd stall of the garage, under a cover. It only has like 70,000 miles on it. It is his 16 year old brother's, but to his dad, it is like the Ferrari in Ferris Bueller's day off.

Yeah, I hear ya. His brother wanted the Z28, but the insurance was much higher. The 5.0 TBI is decently quick all things considered. It's a bit slower than my 4.9 DeVille, so it's probably a low-mid 16 second car. For it's day, it was pretty decent, but now it's slow.

How could you possibly have missed the awesomeness that is Elias's Fleetwood?

I am planning on going again this week but I am not sure which car I will take. They were parked down in the train station parking lot near the far end. They are there every week with their cars so I may make it a weekly thing as well. I stayed until 10:30 on Friday just talking with them.

No pictures from tonight's car show but you guys have to come with me to it (the Downers Grove car show) in August when you visit. Tonight I got to drive a 1965 Fleetwood! One of the other Caddy guys there owns it and he let me take it for a spin. The same guy also owns an Eldorado Brougham, which in case you didn't know, are mega rare.

The 65 was fantastic! I am so used to being surrounded by techno gizmos that being in such a simple car was great. It had all the features of my Brougham but they were all analog. The cruise control was a large dial that was way cool. It also had 8 power windows because it had the little windows in front and behind of the main windows in the doors that were powered. The steering wheel was super thin and felt great in your hands. The seats were very comfortable and hit me in just the right spots (very rare due to my height, especially in older cars). The steering was even easier than the Brougham's but had roughly the same amount of power. It was running a little rough but it was still a great experience.

The doors weren't too heavy, and they were nicely counterbalanced, so it wasn't hard to pull them down. There was a pretty good amount of space, as far as legroom was...the dash was far away from the seats, so it felt pretty open and airy inside. Wasn't much for headroom though.

Chad, if you are ever tempted to become the owner of a De Lorean, run, don't walk the other direction, do not stop running till you find some other way to spend your money.

Over the years, since they were new, I have had 6 friends who have owned DeLoreans. Every one of them rued the day they put their money down and drove it home. In each case it became, not a "love/hate" relationship with the car ..... but a pure hatred of the thing. Now these were not unseasoned "newgies," naive about exotic car ownership, but knowledgeable car collectors used to the foibles of low volume automobiles. The crappy Volvo/Renault V-6 was very unreliable (in any application) and the DMC application was slow and unreliable. The brushed stainless steel was heavy and impossible to keep looking nice due to finger printing and smudging. The doors wouldn't stay in allignment ........ all this hoodoo fro a boulevardier tthat was hard pressed to get out of its' own way.

You have been for warned!!!!

'73 Imperial Lebaron Sedan. This thing is HUGE! Seems much longer and much more substantial than a comparable Continental or deVille. The hood seems as long as one on a Mark IV or Eldorado, much longer than any other full sized sedan.

The 1957 Plymouth has always been a favorite of mine . IMO the '57 Chrysler New Yorker and the '57 Plymouths were the best of the Chrysler Corp. designs of the mid-fifties. Too bad they started rusting before you got them home from the dealership. For a Luxury sedan, though, I think it is hard to beat the '55-'56 Ghia Chrysler show car inspired Imperials.

Now, compare this to that Imperial I posted earlier, it's a '78 New Yorker Brougham, what was basically an Imperial Lebaron Sedan three years prior, before Imperial folded. This one didn't have the super long hood of the '73, but the interior seemed to be laid out a little nicer, but it didn't have that super intimidating exterior either. The 69-73 Imperials just look so mean and intimidating...the 74-78 Imperials and NYB's look a lot like Continentals, mainly due to the waterfall grille.

I think we need a little help from, Sandy, our resident "Imperial" maven and expert! Unless I am mistaken both the Imperial and the New Yorker Brougham were the same car; i.e. no difference in dimensions just a matter of a different tip on the frosting bag!

Oh, that's what I meant, the NYB was the Imperial Lebaron, sans the Imperial badge.

Unless my eyes deceive me, the '78 NYB has a lower beltline than the '73 Imperial and a more upright greenhouse. The combination draws the eyes up and makes the car appear shorter and less massive, even though dimensionally they're identical. The styling on the '73 is also more fluid and rounded, so it flows better, making for a visually more imposing car. The '78's styling is much more choppy, so your brain divides the car into more pieces, leaving you with the impression of a smaller car.

Yeah, I didn't think so either.

As far as exterior design, I have to say yes. A 132 foot long rectangular box is about as uninspiring and ugly as an auto design can be regardless of what badges are on it. The lone exception would be the Cadi Eldorado vert, but the failure in that car is the FWD.

I agree with Chad. a 1959 Chrysler or De Soto (sp?) which has been customized; i.e. the fender snoods and the hood have been modified as has the side spear line from front fender to rear quarter panel. The roof embellishment does not look stock. From what one can see of the tail lights they appear to be De Soto.

Ok, so yesterday was Back To The Fifties. There were 11,562 cars in attendance, and I saw probably 80% of them.

Here's the best of the best.

When you enter, there's a big MECUM auction right past the entrance, and I always go in there and look around for a while first.

Mint '90 Trans AM, 50k miles, TPI 5.7, etc etc.

1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V "Bill Blass" edition. In the late '70s and early '80s, Lincoln would do a lot of special "designer edtion" Lincolns, the color schemes all designed by heads of fashion back then (Pucci, Blass, Cartier, etc etc). The Bill Blass editions were always my favorite...they always used dark blue as their primary color, but their secondary color was either white or saddle. 1977 & 78 used saddle, 1979 used white....So they always had a very nautical theme to them. I've wanted a BB Mark IV or V since I was 17. This is the first time I ever saw one.

The Allante was under rated. It should have had the Northstar for longer, it would have helped out it's reputation for being a world class luxury convertible.

To sum it up, I guess I'd say that the '60s Cadillacs were always more "detail oriented" than the Lincolns, but the Lincolns seemed better looking overall, mainly because the design was so balanced, flowed so well and is so timelessly elegant.

Just got home from the Cadillac & LaSalle Club's 2009 Grand National Meet in Las Vegas, so I thought I'd post a link to the pics I took. The majority of the cars were housed inside the convention center at the South Point Hotel. We would have squeezed them all in, but the fire marshal said no. On the upside, being in the adjacent parking structure meant I didn't have to run my gas down below a quarter tank or disconnect my battery.

I love those Continentals, probably one of my favorite automotive designs ever. I'd say its the most radical production design ever for a four door sedan or convertible. Money being no object, a black on black

Every time I see a picture or one in person though, it reminds me of Kennedy getting his brains blow out in the back seat. I know that sounds horrific, but it just adds to the mystique and legend.

That is a 1962,the 1961's grill came forward to a point as well as the trim on the front end being subtly different, same way you can differentiate between the 1963/'64 Cadillacs

The front parking light is round on the 1961 and square on the 1962. The tail light on the '61 is a chrome horizontal ring enclosing two circular lights, while the 1962 has vertical rectangular chrome housings with a square tail light within. While similar at a glance the cars are quite different when scene side by side. The difference is even more evident when viewing the 1957 and 1958 models side by side: i.e. the '57 grill center is flat and there are black rubber tips on the dagmars, while the center of the '58 is pointed and has no rubber tip dagmars ( they are all chrome), the rear edge of the '57's rear fender slopes toward the front of the car while on the '58 it juts abruptly toward the rear.

Good point, but there is an exception, the '57 Eldorado's fins pointed towards the rear also.1957 had a single headlight, while 1958 sported dual headlights. The front end of the '58 looke more like an Impala with dagmars added than a Cadillac.

The single headlight on the 1957's is a foolproof way to differentiate the '57 from the '58 Cadillacs.

Corvairs are so goofy and eclectic. I really like that '58 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight though. Detroit excess at it's best.

The '58 Oldsmobiles always made me think that the designers took a tube of contemporary toothpaste stole the key design embellishments and tacked them onto a basically ugly body design. Aside from Chevrolets and Pontiacs, 1958 was a pretty dismal year for GM design particularly when compared to 1956 and 1957. Of course nothing tops 1959 when the designers were channeling Aztec and Mayan design elements and reaching out to Eric von Dannekin's ancient astronauts for inspiration!

The side trim of the '58 Olds always reminded me of sheet music with the notes missing. Still would drive a '58 Buick Limited, or Fleetwood 60S. :)

For some reason the 1958 Buick design came off best on the "Limited" pershaps it was its' shear size that helped it out. Same goes for the Cadillac Fleetwood 60S, but IMO it was over embellished kind of a "more is better" interpretation of the '57 which came across as overdone ("crass" springs to mind,) but wait the the '59 is yet to come!

I agree, the '58 Buicks were the best of the 1958 offerings from GM, well aside from the Eldorado Brougham.

The Ford "Skyliner" had to be the worst rattletrap ever built. Not only was the whole chassis a flexible flier but you could also see daylight through all the joints and cracks in the retractable roof. A Navy buddy of mine had one. After he drove my Pontiac Catalina and got back in his Ford for a while, he stopped along side the road to see if he had a flat tire, it drove so bad in comparison.

Some pictures I took from the Downers Grove show on Friday night. The Lincoln was a survivor and not perfect, but still looked fantastic. There was some minor surface rust and the interior had a few pieces cracked and worn but the seats were still soft and comfortable. It was pony night so there were lots of mustangs running around. The truck was one of only 997 made with factory 4wd and even fewer had the factory cow guard on the front.

How many cars are at the DG show?

dirt_cheap_fleetwood
07-12-09, 10:31 PM
A lot. That is only two small parking lots. There is all of Main St. (about 1/4 mile long) plus all the side streets and parking lots are packed. People even park in the drive through for the bank. I would say that on an average night you will see roughly 500 cars driving around as people are constantly coming and going. Here is a video I took that night and the second one is a compilation video someone else took a few weeks ago.

We had a HUGE car show here on the 4th of July that I went to. It was pretty incredible, took up a whole football field. I went with my gf and her family. It was pretty cool. Apparently they do this once every 3 years at a different spot in Hawaii each time. I just snapped as many pictures as I could, so I have a buttload. I don't think I even got pics of half of the cars.

Anyways, I'll see if I can upload them for your enjoyment.

I'm actually not sure if the Shelby Cobra is real or not. When he was pulling in he was overheating. He jumped out, opened the hood, I took the pic, then steam started billowing out from it. I was kinda sad. I was like "Poor Cobra!!!". :p

You guys got it, not sure of the exact year, we need Sandy, but it's definitely a late sixties Chrysler 300. I think they only used those wheels on the big performance Chryslers one year, but Sandy would know for sure!

It was a 300. The exterior was definitely the highlight of the car. It was a base car with crank windows and the seats showed their age. It was nothing horrible but it could have used a little freshening up.

You guys got it, not sure of the exact year, we need Sandy, but it's definitely a late sixties Chrysler 300. I think they only used those wheels on the big performance Chryslers one year, but Sandy would know for sure! It's a '68. Almost all Mopars that year had the little round side marker lights.

All the big Chryslers, Dodges and Plymouths were redesigned with the "fuselage" styling in 1969.

Those are Mopar wheels, but not correct for the year. I think those weren't available until the Seventies.

Some pictures from Downers Grove last night. It was a pretty crummy night, on and off rain and such, so few people showed up. This is my friend's '89 Dakota Convertible. It's one of only about 3000 made.

M..WOW! That is rare to see a 66 Toro in red with the gray painted wheels. Very nice. Quite possibly a rare and extinct W-34 (which I'm pretty sure was also in 68). The tell-tale sign is RARE bucket seats, dual exhaust cutouts bumper, and the 390 H.P. Hurst/Olds 455 motor with "C" heads. My brother has a green 68 bucket seat car sunk in the ground in an old horse barn.

Very cool pic!

That was a nice Mark VII until he killed it with the spoiler on the back.

Here are some from Downers Grove on Friday. There were 3 DeLoreans there. One was electric powered and had a projector mounted up front that shone onto the hood. It also had the best license plate ever. The other was completely decked out like the Back to the Future car and everything lit up and worked just like it did in the movie.

Pictures from the show I went to last weekend in Bremerton, WA. Got to meet LS1 Mike (good guy) and see his T/A. Unfortunately, I left my camera back with Betty when checking out his car, so I didn't get pictures.

We had a nice shady spot, but the shade kept moving away as the day progressed, and Hoover and I moved with it.

For Chad, his ultimate automotive fantasy, a 1979 Lincoln Mark V and a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado. Both are all original (save for the Eldo's vinyl roof); the owner inherited the Eldo from her grandfather and the Mark from an aunt. The Mark V was built on Valentine's Day, 1979.

Probably my favorite car at the show (besides Betty), a '67 Buick Riviera GS:

This was the location for the car show. God, I love the Pacific Northwest:

If Satan had a car, it would be a black Charger. The purple Charger is for Satan's ghay cousin. You stole the first line from me. But I give you full credit for the second. Well done! :histeric:

The '66-'67 Toronado might be the best looking Oldsmobile ever.I heartily agree.

Purple Charger's are okay, but I would kill for a Plum Crazy Purple Challenger.

I have an unexplainable fixation with the Edsels. That grille is oddly cool.

Hahah, my friend actually bought one of the new body 3's in a manual and its a pretty fun car actually. It has welcome music and everything.

Hey V-Eight, is that Charger for sale at all? My friend is looking for one to replace the one they had to sell a few years ago.

If it was for sale, I'd buy it :P

I don't think so, I didn't see any signs on it, I think the guy was just parked for dinner or something.

What is "welcome music?" I have this vision of little Japanese girls poping up from the dash board and bowing and greeting you as they do in Japanese department stores!

There's a little jingle that plays when you get in and start the car.....so not quite your fantasy

An interesting license plate I saw today, not quite accurate as I think that plate belongs on a V2

Lakefield, MN. Down here near Iowa. This was the 2nd car show in the city, we have the regular one in June (missed it for work!) And this was a fund raiser for the clinic.
