So is that "fire engine red"? Or does it have a metallic flake in it? Awesome looking Coupe Deville either way.

And one more question . . . Did the 77-84 Coupe Deville have frameless door glass? Its been ages since I've seen one in person.

Thank you! No metallic flake in the paint, it's just plain red, red, red! Also, to answer your question: No, none of the '77 and up full-size B, C or D body GM coupes had frameless door glass, although the Monte Carlo, Olds Cutlass etc. did I believe. Maybe Benzilla could correct me if I'm wrong here. I kinda wish there wasn't a frame around the window on my coupe, because I love that look... oh well! I still love the car.

Thanks CS. Here's a couple shots (with different cameras). Interior is pretty much mint, I don't think the back seat has ever been sat in. I've added a factory AM/FM/8-track, and there's a 6-cd changer under driver's seat that runs through the stereo (FM modulated).

Benzilla

Yay! Good to be back, guys. Craig, the eldo was for sale in town, I was driving by and saw it. I had some time to kill, so I stopped and took it for a test drive... things escalated from there, now it's mine. I traded my Cutlass fir it. Only thing is, it's in the shop right now getting some *unexpected* repairs done. So I'm a little sore about it, but wen I get it back, I'll have a great old Eldo with 66k on the clock. I'll post a link to the thread I have in the Eldorado forum when I find it.

Best thread ever! MFB, when did you get an eldo? I wanted to be the first! lol.

I picked up the '71 vert back in early November. It had been in an elderly man's garage since 1991, and he had just got through redoing the whole engine, interior, and top. Unfortunately mold got to the top and I accidently busted out the back glass. So I'm redoing the top, and I'm painting her too!

But Ben, I thought you wanted a '79-85 Eldo? I basically bought mine to flip, since all that work was done. :D

Your Coupe looks great. It's come a long way. Which reminds me, back when your '76 was brand new, I bought my first Caddy in 1976. It was a '58 CDV that was pretty much ready for the junk yard. I paid $285 for it and drove it several years. Nothing worked on the car but the power windows and the 8-track player. Forgot to put enough antifreeze in it one winter, and the good-running 365 froze like a popsicle one night. I then installed a 390 from a '62 and drove the car a few more years. It was basically a party barge, a ton of reefer was smoked in that thing. I always dreamed of restoring it, but that never panned out.

Actually I have all that stuff in my basement, I took it all off to Bondo. The dash is wrecked though and needs replacing, here's the list of crap I need....

-Door panels
-Rear seat area panels (where doors would be if it wasn't a coupe)
-Front seats
-Dashboard, top and bottom
-Radio trim woodgrain piece that goes across the whole dash
-Radio wiring harness
-Steering wheel
-Seatbelt loops on seats
-Horns
-Fuel leaks from the top of the tank, prolly a line.
-More rust still to fix
-New paint
-New vinyl top

Still soooo much more to do!!! :crying:

I got that done actually. The car runs and drives exponentially better than it did when I first got it. The only thing it needs before it can be drivable is the wheels are all outta balance because of the hubcaps I have on the car which don't allow wheel weights on the outer edge of the rim. The fuel leak needs fixing too but it stops after a few minutes when it's parked. I also don't own skirts, still gotta find those. I think I forgot to add them to the list of needed parts. For now the car needs plates and insurance.....

Dope, is that a Security System light I see in there? I know they had primitive car alarms back then but I didn't think they had dash lights yet.
Yeah it has the alarm system, it just doesn't work at the moment because all 4 horns are dead. The lights blink and I can hear one horn clicking under the hood. The trunk closed switch is dying though and sometimes sets it off for no reason so I don't arm it for that reason. I need a new one of those also. Haven't given up yet, it's a very well loaded Coupe and for that reason I'm fighting tooth and nail to keep at it....

I have a project thread buried somewhere in the vast ruins of the RWD section. Sometimes I just feel like I got more than I bargained for but after posting here earlier today I went outside and tried to bring the dashboard back a little. Some asshat used either tar or black RTV silicone to "permanently" attach an illfitting dash top to the original dash. I was outside trying my hardest to get that crap off the original dash which is full of cracks. Not sure if it can be saved but I'm trying anyway....

Anyone who can help me with parts please let me know....

Try SoffSeal and Metro. I think that the part is a pretty standard GM piece. Any from the full size GM line will probably work.

Let's see some pics of that LeCab! :D

Yes, I know, but the top rack that Hess and Eisenhart used was standard GM. Same rack was used for other year LeCabs, too. We know a bit about them, too ;)

I think that the 76 and earlier part can likely work. I'll check with another source for you...

Have you ever tried to put bigger rims on the car with the switches? Do they not fit? I have always wondered what a car with switches and 20s would look like, or 18s. Something besides 13s.

Try to picture a car with wheels that big hopping. You could go with 14s. :D

hello I have a 1979 cadillac deville convertible (le cabriolet) does anybody know where I can get the roof rail weatherstrips for this car.

You can find convertible weatherstrip on this website. I only see the 80-81 Convertible listed, but I'm pretty sure you can call them and they'll have it - if that's not the same header bar and weatherstrip.

Hi, I sold this car in 8/06 on eBay for $2,495. 1981 Fleetwood Brougham Coupe with 368 V8-6-4, had 238k miles when I sold it. It had 229k miles on it when I purchased it in 1/04 for $500 - it was traded in at the local Toyota dealer and at the time I was a car dealer myself and bought it wholesale for what the dealer took it in for - they were happy to get rid of it - I couldn't believe what a cool car I picked up! It was quite decent when I bought it, everything worked, and I wanted to use it as a fun daily driver so I had everything possible renewed including exhaust, tires, shocks, springs, brakes, radiator, belts, hoses, etc. - and sunk about $3 or $4 grand into it. The V8-6-4 had some quirks which drove me crazy and my mechanic couldn't figure out the problem so I decided to sell it and later found out the new owner fixed the problem with the V8-6-4 and the car ran awesome. Good for him! The Fleetwood Brougham Coupe looks better and better as the years go by. I miss that car and admire all of you who own one of these beauties!

^Are you sure it had that many miles? That interior is mint and shows almost no wear:bonkers:

Bro-Ham
06-24-09, 12:58 PM
Hi, Yes, I'm sure the mileage was over 200k. I ran a CarFax when I bought it and it was a two owner car and it was emissions certified for over 10 years with the mileage climbing consistently each year. It was not a perfect car but it sure wasn't bad. The V8-6-4 problem was its only downfall and had I been able to solve that problem I would have kept the car. Chad from the Cadillac forum here drove the car when I lived in Minnesota and saw it in all its glory. :-) It was a bit challenging to sell because so many people saw the pictures and thought something didn't seem right - like it was too good to be true! There really are super nice and very well maintained cars with really high mileage. Don't be afraid to consider them. The dude who bought my car got a good deal and everything was new on it. Again, now that I know he fixed the V8-6-4 I really miss that car!!! I'm happy I didn't sell my 79 Sedan deVille tiki barge since it is also a super nice car but it doesn't have the visual appeal of the Fleetwood brougham coupe. Dave

More info, and more pics, please! Well deserving of its own thread...

Jay,
Thanks for the interest. I purchased the car from its second owner in 98.
Its almost fully loaded for 85. Its missing the remote rear view mirror & the memory drivers seat. The paint is 90% original - 3x black. Even-though its kept in a climate controlled garage, last year I had to replace the fillers. No matter what you do, they always crack at some point.
I also still have the original tires, I put the vogues on it just to preserve them. However Diamond back makes a great duplicate 225 70 r15.
A set of 4 will cost you close to a grand. They should be on the car in a few weeks.
Non of the prior owners knew that this was the last one.
I called up GM in 98 to ask if I can get a copy of the build sheet, this woman was very nice to me. She took the VIN number & had a rep call me back the following week to confirm all the info. At that point it became more of a garage queen. Its not a 100 mile time capsule car, But as close as you can get. I think I put 200 miles on it in ten years.
A few of the larger cadillac dealerships in NJ have had in on display on there showroom floor. It always gets a great reaction.
More to come when I get some extra time.
Thanks

brougham

I am not big on the "bling" stuff either. However, these fit the wheel well perfectly. They are 20 X 9 with a 275 tire. Really wide. Plus I found them second hand so they were cheaper than a new set of whitewalls. I bought them off of a Jeep that was being turned in from a lease. I have never seen another wheel with this style/design. The center caps say ION. Thanks for the compliment.

Man that car is incredible for the mileage. Hell its just incredible period. Sure it didn't have 138k, or maybe just 38k, since the odometers were only five digits back then?? Seriously, those seats look nicer than the ones in my car with half the mileage.

It was owned by a complete car nut and maintained perfectly from day one. Car went south every winter. It was a 25+ year old car when I had it and that was less than 10,000 miles per year. I also ran a carfax report which showed the manditory emissions testing with mileage increases anually which verified how many times the odometer went around through the years. It was a very decent car, not as nice as my 92k mile '79 Sedan deVille, but for 238k miles you're right that coupe was super clean!

A late reply is better than no reply....I've been including windshields in the tint assignment since 06....no issues at all, but my wife was claiming it was harder for her to see, so I actually peeled hers off. No complaints as far as I'm concerned, and it looks more uniform IMO.

Restored and sold a couple other Cadillacs, really wanted a coupe though. Stumbled across this one in November, much nicer and much cheaper than I could have dreamed, she's a keeper. 72k miles, runs and drives like it's still 1970.

My first Cadillac would have been a 76 coupe exactly in this color, guy wanted $500 for it and all I had was half, came up with the rest and it was already gone when I went back.
What this Caddy needs is wider whitewalls.

Elias, that is a stunning Coupe Deville. Although I don't care for that white vinyl top, it is very period correct. I'd personally prefer no vinyl top or one that went over the whole roof.

Hi CS, in fact the wheels on that 81 Fleetwood Brougham Coupe I previously owned are the very ones I sold you which you have on your blue 84 Coupe deVille! The difference is the center caps pictured on my old 81 Coupe are 93-96 Fleetwood Brougham caps, the caps on your wheels are 93-96 Fleetwood non-Brougham. I have the non-Brougham lace style wheels on my car currently and somehow they got switched around since I have the Brougham caps with them. Did that make sense?! :)

Take a look, here is my current 79 Sedan deVille:

Nice car Bro-Ham. Did it have a diesel?...

Oh, thanks! That 81 Fleetwood Brougham Coupe was a superb old car, wasn't perfect but darn nice. It had the 6.0/368 V8-6-4 which was temperamental to say the least! If it had a diesel I would still own it - want one of those! :)

238k and clear cornering lights and an unripped drivers armrest....you'd have a better shot of having people believe it had 38k that 238k

That 81 Fleetwood Brougham Coupe I had was a beauty, not a show winner, but nothing to be ashamed of either. It was as decent in person as it looks in that picture. Always garaged, up north in summer, down south in winter. Original owner was beyond fussy! It would have been a stretch to say it looked like 38k miles, totally would have passed for a well kept 138k, but a quick look at a CARFAX report showed visits every year for over ten years to the previously mandatory MN emissions testing with increasing mileage readings each year revealed by the owner. Yes, there really are nicely kept and clean original cars with high miles. My 79 Sedan deVille is pushing 120k and most folks can't believe it has that many miles. :)

06-25-12, 02:33 PM
I think the rims have a pretty high positive offset, thats also why they stick out so much, so they dont go over the brakes much if at all.

CBodyFan
06-25-12, 04:11 PM
High positive offset makes sense. However that would be rough on the suspension components.

As for the 2dr custom Fleetwood pictured, I had a magazine a few years bak, a hot-rod type magazine, I don't recall which one, that had an article on how they converted that style Fleetwood into a 2 dr sedan from a 4 dr. The workmanship is superb and it really looks factory. If it had a set of factory wheels it would fool most people.

Grinding the rotors wouldn't accomplish anything, the caliper would still be in the same place, and that's what sticks out the farthest anyway.

I really love the Le Cab's. I wish people would leave them alone, however. As much as I like layitlow, it saddens me to see very rare cars like the Le Cab's cut up and customized all the time. Don't get me wrong- I really like a well done custom car, especially a Caddy. The Le Cab's are so rare and unique that it would be nice if there were some left stock so 50 years from now people of the future could appreciate how cool the Caddies of the 70's were.

not much reinforcing to the frame was done on these Le Cabs. The tops of the wheelwells were cut out and placed back in upside down so that the top could sit lower. There is a brace from the inner qtrs to the floor on both sides and under the frame that goes over the axle, there's a small piece of metal welded. I have seen the pictures on layitlow but I cannot recall the name of the topic...

It's all good ... I was just teasing ... wouldn't have posted another one, if I thought otherwise.

It'll soon be time to sell the other ones, these are replacing, as I'm completely out of room ... when it rains it pours, I guess!!

I know the white one looks pretty bad-ass in that pic (bad pics of the black one, also) ... but in reality, I still think that black looks best on these cars. (Saffron Red with a white interior is pretty bad-ass, as well, come to think of it)

Plus, the white car does not have Level Ride (ELC) so it's sitting up and the black one is sitting down a little (Level ride cars has softer springs) ... white car has wire wheels and bigger tires, too ... black car has wire hub caps and very small factory size tires ... once the black one is sitting "up" like my '77 and '78 do, with 235/70's, with better pics, it'll "level the playing field", so to speak.

Noooo....not the chain-link wheel.....that was my favorite Cadillac option!

Good on you for bringing that back from the dark side. Are the wheels 15's or will they have to go too? You should have a "un-build" thread detailing the cost and process of converting back to stock. I have seen quite a few with modifications and thought about them, but always wondered how hard and expensive it would be. I assume the salvaged parts would have a decent value on Lay It Low?

Good job saving a fine old coupe!

The back bumper might not be gone, you would need to clean and polish it to tell for sure. I have been pretty with bad chrome, even using 0000 synthetic steel wool and then coating with a clear when done to get a few years out of a bad part.
The rust coming from the roof line is the biggest worry seen in the photos. The vinyl is probably lost it's smooth protective finish and is absorbent now and letting the roof rust under the padding. If looking for a long term car, pulling and repairing under it is the only way to go. For a couple years of fun, cleaning it and painting with a spray clear satin will stop water entering and give you a decent driver quality look.

Honestly i would most likely have the roof pulled have body work and paint then sent to a roof guy

Good job saving a fine old coupe![/QUOTE]

Haha thanks, yea the rims are 15's and I do like the spokes so i"m thinking about keeping them and just ditching the low pros. And yea I'm sure the lowrider guys could use some of the stuff, The rims are dayton's and I looked up what they go for new and it was about $2400 for a set of 4. This didn't have bags in it, just really really short coils but they weren't cut, so they had to be aftermarkets

Returning it to the original ride geometry will greatly improve handling and ride. The larger tires will as well. It will look great too as you said. :p

Very cool! I would keep the wheels too. Glad they were 15's. Hard to tell with the little lopros on them. Good score on the car.
Can't wait to see it all done. I'm no hater either, but they look so good original!

Most definitely, it rides like a dream already just from going back to the stock springs and shocks. The poor thing used to bottom out on roads with barely any incline or bumps. I would cringe every time I drove it lol As you said the tires are going to be another noticeable improvement for sure.

We need updated progress photos! :)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned it yet, but what's up with the blacked-out cornering lamps? Is that just a cover?

I'll post some pics as it starts coming along, and when I bought the car the cornering lamps were blacked out. It's not a cover its like a paint I guess, one of my buddys smoked the taillights out on his car and that's how he did it.
