Hello, i have seen an engine currently on ebay called a Shelby northstar, i have found out it is from the early to mid nineties and produces 375 hp. i called Shelby in Vegas and they had very little info for me. it was kind of weird.
i cant imagine it would be a drop in replacement. anyone have any info??

The Shelby engine was a 4.0 Aurora V8 with the L37 intake cams, and different PCM programming, and it produced 320 HP. This sounds bogus to me- could you post a link to the ad?

The computer that ran the Shelby Aurora was basically an LS1 computer with a special tune. AJ could tell you more.

The Shelby engine has been dropped in Olds Aurora, directly bolts in, and runs though not so great in the Aurora due to the factory PCM tune. The base tune runs worse than the Autobahn tune. It should work about the same in the Caddies. If you have 3.11 gears it will run worse than the base aurora which has 3.48 gears

Sounds like BS to me, who would sell a brand new N* for a $1500 starting bid, let alone a factory Shelby engine? If this is all true, it is well worth the price.

Look real hard at one of the pics.....whatever engine that is, it has spark plug wires (not coil-on-plug), so it's already 10 years old, has flat tappet cams, and the present owner really doesn't have any idea what it is. Snake oil.

Thanks eldo and everyone else. i have spoken to the seller and he know little about it. made me think it was stolen. i was just curious about it as i am doing my eng now.
eldo i will b calling soon for a stud kit. my project is held up b/c my eng had an external crack from previous owner putting in straight water last winter so now i need a junkyard motor to start over.

That sucks, regular water should never be used even without the freezing temps. The stud kits are sold out as of now, another order is supposed to come in on Wednesday- I look forward to hearing from you.

thats good news. I spoke to a veteran dragster engine builder about your method and he also said its definitely the way to go. I also wanted to ask you how many special tools i would need to do this. there is a kit on ebay with timing chain, valve seal, rear eng seal tools etc. etc. for $100.00. would you say that is needed? Thanks again, dan

I built my own tools, but you can by them if you want. Setting the timing doesn't require special tools but it helps.

All of these engines were sold at an auction at the Shelby plant! All of the engines were sold in lots of 10! Yes you had to buy 10 engine at one time! All of the engines were sold for $250 or the 10 of them for $2500! That is the facts!

When they were first coming on the market they were listing for $3500 to $5500. WOW some people got rich!

So can the Shelby N* drop into the cadillacs AJ? or just the aurora?

Lets revive a dead thread, J/K
But I'm curious as what has been done to the Shortstar engine to gain 70HP? Imagine if we could gain another 100HP. Maybe Jake can dissect it and see where the performance was made.
If it fit in the Aurora it should fit Cadillac but without proper PCM it will not run or use the power capability. Seen some available on Ebay and Craigslist.

the shortstar is the 3.5 V6 version. do not believe the 4.0 northstar ever had a nickname. maybe it was the slowstar? saw a 3.5 in junkyard last week. had front head missing. walked around car and it was sitting in mud and frozen into the ground. wanted to turn it over and look at the valves but i could not get it out of the ice.

4.0L is not a Shortstar
