View Full Version : 4.9 reliability :P semiauto 07-13-04, 05:58 AM When they say that 4.9s are really reliable I guess they really mean it. I currently have a 93 Eldo 4.9 in my garage with a 150 shot wet kit on it. Seven bottles (15lb) have been put through this motor (changing the oil after every bottle, Mobil 1 of course). It still runs great, even with the timing retarded a bit. LacSeville 07-13-04, 09:24 AM well, let's have some pics! when are you hitting the button during acceleration? What kit did you use? Sounds nifty!
your homepage didn't have anything about your car, but it looks like it'll be professional when you're done with it! Msilva954 07-13-04, 09:41 AM I know the engine is reliable.......but what about the transmission. Daniel Almestica 07-13-04, 01:44 PM this is a really reliable car if you take care of it semiauto 07-15-04, 05:31 AM To handle the power and get it to the ground, I had the transmission rebuilt with kevlar bands and clutchpacks. I also put in a beefier torque convertor and a bigger trans cooler. Pics should be up soon on semiautoinc.com
Oh, by the way, the nitrous setup is a 15lb bottle from NX, solenoids from NOS, lines from NX, a push button momentary button from JC whitney, NOS purge kit, and I drilled the NOS jet into a throttle body spacer for a TBI Chevy truck. I dont mess with any of that WOT switches and such, just a button to push and hold when I put my foot to the floor. Pics of this should be up soon too.
I launch the car at 4000 and dont hit the button til my foot is on the floor. I had my first kill with the car on the street tonight. It was a 99 Mitsu Eclipse GSX. I got him by about a car length, spraying all the way. Msilva954 07-15-04, 04:44 PM WOW, if you dont mind me asking...how much did it cost to build the tranny like that. semiauto 07-15-04, 05:08 PM I think I paid a lil over a grand for the trans rebuild and the torque convertor. illumina 07-15-04, 08:00 PM When they say that 4.9s are really reliable I guess they really mean it. i would like to know how many miles is on your ride??? and also if the engine has been rebuilt, because i am interested in getting a zex "dry" system for my car that will add about a 75 shot. thaks, illuminaP. semiauto 07-15-04, 09:51 PM Its the original motor with 96k on it. Never been rebuilt, but it does have new head gaskets. Dont go ZEX, just get a NOS universal wet kit. Dry nitrous kits are kinda risky. Even though ZEX is computer controlled, a wet shot is way better for your motor. illumina 07-15-04, 11:00 PM Its the original motor with 96k on it. thanks for the reply dude. i have been gathering the money to rebuild my 4.9 liter for a 300+ hp engine.(tranny too) the way i see it, if ASG can make that power from the engine, so can i. i also will add the bolt-on's that currently exist on the car, thus adding a little more power. i just hope the combination of all this shit will not be too much for the motor...:helpless: semiauto 07-16-04, 09:06 AM Oh one other thing. I snapped my top motor mount last night. I was racing a Mustang for $100. I guess the motor can handle the power but the mounts just cant. I got a buddy that is going to make me a milled steel dogbone for the top with urethane inserts. If anyone else is interested, I might consider having him make a shitload of them and sell em. LacSeville 07-16-04, 11:09 AM I'll stick with ones with rubber... ;) What were you thinking racing a Mustang... for $100? You surely know that a stock 4.9 won't beat a mustang, unless it's a 6! I got creamed by many of them in my 93 Dev! Night Wolf 07-16-04, 12:14 PM heh.... I broke *both* of my front motor mounts... without and nitrus or anything... well, 1 went, I didn't know it, and then it killed the other.... then when we reaplced the one that we though was bad, the other was bad also, so I had to be real easy on it (didn't want to ruin the new mount) but now they are both new.....
the only nitrus I ever thought of adding would be a NOS Sneaky Pete system... it is like a 35shot... but I am not doing anything with the 4.9.... the 500 that is getting built up and going in my '79... well well have to see :D I launch the car at 4000 and dont hit the button til my foot is on the floor.
Do you have Line-Lok?
Do you mean sit there in gear smokin' the fronts or rev up in neutral then slam the transmission into gear when ready to fire? LacSeville 07-16-04, 07:05 PM I launch the car at 4000 and dont hit the button til my foot is on the floor.
haha the accelerator IS on the floor at 4k! (not really, but pretty much) I need you to post pics... I wanna believe that you have N20 on your car! Night Wolf 07-17-04, 12:03 AM he most likely means powerbrake it... which is keep it in gear, keep your foot on the brake, and hit the gas... when I race at the drag strip, I usually power brake the '93... but only to 2,000rpm or so...
...even though the enigne redlines around 5,200rpm, if in neutral, it dosn't take much to bring the revs up to 4k... even in gear, your fott will never be to the floor.... it'll definitly start to spin the tires..... although that (especially at 4krpm) it hell on the tranny and torque convertor.... semiauto 07-18-04, 07:06 AM I powerbrake at launch, but I hold it at around 3200, then floor it on the green while pressing the spray button. Pictures / scanned timeslips will be up soon as soon as I go to the strip sometime next week.
