yeah, yeah. i know the V's already have it, but I've gotten used to my Garmin over this past year. I've just picked up the V & after a week of trying to get used to it, I've determined that - it sucks. Do any of you use a Garmin and how do you have it mounted? OR - better yet, is there a way to get Garmin functionality through the factory Nav screen?
yeah the v's navi sucks big time.. i still use my iphone if i need something quick or to check the traffic... i actually still haven't figured out how to change the damn state. it is stuck on Michigan and won't seem to let me change that to California!
The user interface for the CTS Navi is a bit clunky to use to say the least. I only have the original Navi disc that came with the car. I want to get the update but what I have found with navigation updates is that they rarely contain enough new information to justify the price. I can say the factory unit has been very helpful.
For my other vehicles, I use a Garmin GPSmap 76CSx handheld. On occasion, I use a suction cup mount by Ram Mounts. I bought my father a Garmin Nuvi (model?) unit that he like alot. He uses the weghted beanbag type mount from Garmin. For my brother-in-law, we got him a Garmin bike trainer unit.
I think Garmin makes the best naviagtion/GPS units. They all have their own limitations and quirks.
I am glad I am not the only one that thinks the V's navi sucks. It has gotten me lost twice already since the disc is outdated. And the whole interface isn't user friendly at all. I use my AndNav on my G1 to get me where I need to go.
I used to have a TOM TOM. I have used a Garmin (older one about 3 yrs ago). And other than the interface (touch screen rocks) I have not had any problems with the navi in the V.
I don't know where you guys are using yours but I have used mine from OH, KY, TN, FL, NC, SC and VA with no problems yet. Of course I don't get off the highways much except in the city. With the exception of a new section of interstate that was built a few miles from my house in 2004 and a few subdivisions that are new, mine has all the roads I need. It gets me from A-B, helps me with my ETA, leads me to gas stations, dealerships, stores, restaurants AND hotels.
Besides the interface, just what does your Garmin/TOM TOM do that is so special?
I think one of the problems with the V's navigation is the amount of time it takes to recalculate if you miss a turn. On mine it takes about 4 or 5 seconds to do so and often in New Jersey, you're way past the street it was planning on recalculating you to turn on already. For one, I've tried using the V's navigation in New York City and it is totally worthless. In the amount of time it takes to recalculate, I've already driven past the street and 3 or 4 more, so it just recalculates again and again. I know the portable ones (tomtom and garmin nuvi's) recalculate in 1 second, along with Verizon Navigator and the one on the iPhone. That's important in the concrete jungle around where I live.
I still cant figure out how to get the unit to pick an addy outside of new jersey. How on earth do I select anything other then NJ when I want to go to NY/CT etc. I can pick the state but it shows only like 1/2 the towns/cities.
after using the navi in the 09 escalade ive been spoiled

i get 20's mpg all the time not as much as i get 11 though.:stirpot:
But yeah the Navi sucks but like he said dude hit the state button its super easy and set your home to your state and you should be ready to roll. And having another GM vehicle (suburban) I've gotten used to it. But trust me count the blessings, because the Navi in brothers 2000 Merc s6oo which is cdrom based really really sucks! its 2 discs just for the east coast.
if that was to me i never had an issue finding a state.... i wrote that the cities i am looking for were not being listed in that state. ie in ny state it only showed brooklyn and nothing else on the island
so to recap in post 17 i can pick any state, just the cities are missing
The nav is far from perfect, but it's still usable for long trip or to find location that are unknown to me. The only thing that irritate me is how unfriendly the turn-by-turn directions are. There is so much information displayed on screen that it takes 2-3 seconds to see what you want. I also wish it was touchscreen but I guess the technology was too expensive back then (~2002).
My friend's Acura TL 2005 has a really cool feature; auto-zooming of the map depending on the speed you go. But the refresh rate on the TL wasn't as good, it would refresh the location every 1-2 seconds where as the GPS in the V refreshes every 0.5 sec. It's also damn near impossible to find a street in a big city just by looking at the map on the screen (scrolling mode).
To be honest, i'd rather not use it and get lost than risk scratching the buttons :suspense:
To you guys getting really bad gas mileage...do you have a tune? Ever since I got my w4m tune on my V my gas mileage has drastically improved.
