My name David I got a 1986 Caddilac eld with 167,000 mile with the 4100

every now and then The Steering wheel will lock up and the car cut off and when it does it all u see is the icon on the screen showing up I was wondering do anybody know what it could be cause it seem to be dangerous I dont want it to happen to me at the wrong time. It mostly happen when I am backing up or turning and the car will just stop and u got to restart it cause the steering wheel wont turn if anybody know what it could be please help

When the engine stalls the power steering no longer functions. The steering isn't locked...it is just very hard to turn due to the loss of power assist. The engine stall is the thing causing your problem...not the steering effort.


Could be just the state of tune of the engine...the plugs/wires/etc. Could also be the idle speed control motor not functioning correct. Search on "ISC" and "ISC motor" in the archives and read my posts.

Did you check the onboard diagnostics for any trouble codes?? With the key on simultaneously press and hold the OFF and WARMER buttons on the climate control panel until the onboard diagnostics activates...and watch the displays when the trouble codes scroll by.
