This is the problem. Any movement of the steering wheel produces a 'clunk'. Happens while driving, or while standing still. Either way. left or right it happens. Sounds like it's coming from the steering column and appears to be louder on the outside than from withing the car.
Do a search for "steering" in this SRX forum and you'll see a bunch of symptoms and possible fixes. My steering noise was corrected with a new rack & pinion unit replaced under warranty.
thanks, good tip.
I found a tread that talks about the rack and pinion beeing loose.
Now is this a DIY job to retorque the bolts or is a trip to the dealed required?

You can lay on the ground and have a trusted one turn the steering wheel back and forth. If the rack and pinion is loose should be able to see it move... or if you can reach one end, feel for clunks. There's an attachment bolt at each end. Torque specs = 134 lb-ft. To tighten you'll need the front on ramps or jack stands to get maneuvering room.
