View Full Version : Favorite Cadillac PRE 2000 OffThaHorseCEO 03-22-09, 02:49 PM I wanna see your favorite pre 2000 cadillacs
please, i dont wanna see any mention of audi, mercedes, BMW, infiniti, volvo, etc etc. id like to keep this thread entirely cadillac. Also, if you can, please keep it to one model, or one series at least (example, 94-96 FWB)
ill start. although i have never driven this car ive been lusting after it for about 4 years now. i love the styling, the business in the front, party in the back look (haha) the curves, the interior, the sheer opulence. i WILL own one of these even if it has to be a multi year restore project...

1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz
http://www.smatarese.com/forum/000_0049.jpg Caddy Man 03-22-09, 05:35 PM Maybe someone can clear this up for me...but I never understood the exact differences between the 1959 Eldorado and the 1959 Series 62. Anything but the 1986 Eldorado.
You're thinking, "Why don't you hate the Cimarron more?" Let me explain.
The Cimarron was always a low-level joke of a car. It never aspired to be anything but a tarted up Cavalier. The Eldorado, on the other hand, was a legendary badge attached to legendary luxury cars. GM sold many, many thousands until the horrible redesign in 1986, and sales never recovered.

Stupid car. I have always had a thing for the 1989-1992 C-Body FWD Fleetwood and its identical 1993 Sixty Special (that I own). In addition the 1967 - 1970 Eldorado and the last Coupe deVille of 1993, and the custom one made Seville in California into a 2-Door Coupe. AKA Seville Coupe` Called San Remo. gdwriter 03-22-09, 07:03 PM That '68 Eldorado is stunning; it's definitely one of my favorite classic cars. Doesn't it look like you could cut your finger if you ran it over the rear fender and taillights? From a more modern perspective, I love the '92-'97 Seville. The '98+ Seville is a handsome refinement of the original (with a better interior), but since that design continued through 2004, I'll leave it off the pre-2000 list.
I agree with Jesda on the '86 Eldorado. That thing was an abomination. 1986 was the nadir for Cadillac; they've been clawing back to respectability ever since. King Steve 03-22-09, 07:34 PM 80-85 Seville with the "bustle-back" is one I'd love to find in good condition at a fair price.
Also, Jesda check out this Cimarron. I've always kind of wanted it.. OffThaHorseCEO 03-22-09, 07:40 PM That '68 Eldorado is stunning; it's definitely one of my favorite classic cars. it sure does. in many of the articles ive seen reviewing or just plain talking about that eldorado, ive seen it referred to as razorback or knife edge, knife fins, razor fins etc etc.
i like the 98+ seville as well, what year did they get HID?
i also agree with jesda on the 86 eldo, as a matter of fact, mst cadillacs from that point in time were horrible.... Rodya234 03-22-09, 08:10 PM http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2439/ext2k.jpg (http://img17.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ext2k.jpg)

Seville got HID in 2001, which was available on the STS only with the Performance Luxury Package which also included 17" wheels and a few other amenities. Best Seville's by far were the late '02-'03 models with the Mag ride suspension. Looking back I wish I would have waited and found one, even though I love my 2000. slk230mb 03-22-09, 08:18 PM Maybe someone can clear this up for me...but I never understood the exact differences between the 1959 Eldorado and the 1959 Series 62.
The 1959 Eldorado came with the bigger V8 engine standard, and had optional front bucket seats instead of the bench. It also had the chrome strip running down both sides. Over the tail light lenses was a V. There were 99 Eldorado Biarritz's with bucket seats in 1959.

I inherited my love for 59 Caddies from my dad. We currently have 2 - an Eldorado Biarritz (pictured above) and a Fleetwood Brougham (pics on this site in other posts). In order of preference:
1977-1979 Coupe de Ville (for sentimental reasons, but also because they're damn handsome cars)

1965 Fleetwood Brougham

I thought the the 98-99's had a little more pick up due to higher compression before they lowered it to run 87.
As old and depreciated these cars are, theyre really just throwaway cars. If my head gaskets go, I may just replace it. dirt_cheap_fleetwood 03-22-09, 09:48 PM '87-'88 DeVille or Fleetwood (preferably an '88 because it had the 4.5).

The '98 and '99's did, but Cadillac called it the Premium Luxury Package because it had a slightly stiffer version of the CVRSS struts and the HID's. I've driven two '99 STS (one with 75k and the other 62k) and both felt stronger throughout the powerband than my '00. Even though with my new spark plugs I could easily beat them.
EDIT: Not Performance; my bad.

The '98-'03 Seville STS is one of my favorite cars. Ever. Even though the body is softer than the 4th Gen, it's more refined and elegant looking. Even though my '00 drives me crazy, I adore it. Playdrv4me 03-23-09, 12:38 AM Far as I'm concerned the chassis is ages old and the car was introduced in 1998 so it counts. :)
The last ORIGINAL body Volkswagen Beetle for example was sold sometime in the 2000s (2001 or 2003 I think?) but I wouldn't consider it a "2000s" car by any stretch. OffThaHorseCEO 03-23-09, 02:00 AM Far as I'm concerned the chassis is ages old and the car was introduced in 1998 so it counts. :)

http://i489.photobucket.com/albums/rr256/Torque2000/1972_Cadillac_Sedan_de_Ville.jpg ryannel2003 03-23-09, 11:00 AM Oh well then I take back my original post stating my favorite is the 4th Gen. My favorite pre-2000 Cadillac is the 1998-2003 Cadillac Seville STS. Since I'm a whore, I'm posting a picture of my favorite Seville STS.
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n46/ryannel2003/Cadillac%20Seville%20STS/IMG_0429.jpg billc83 03-23-09, 12:13 PM A funny thing about this thread is that the choices are subjective.
Take Torque's answer of 1972 Deville; I'm not a fan of the '71 - '73 Deville's styling, especially the headlights. I'm also not a huge fan of the "stacked headlights" from '65 - '68. But to each his own.
That being said, some of my favorites (YMMV, of course):
- The quintessential Cadillac is a 1959 convertible. I will own one some day.
- Following that, '57 is the best designed of the "fins," followed by '64 - it just depends if you prefer 50's rounded styling or the styling of the 60's. I favor the 50's.
- 1967 Eldorado - probably the sexiest Cadillac of the 60s.
- I really liked the '75 - '76 Eldorados, convertibles get preferential treatment.
- The Allante - sexiest Cadillac of the 80s. Took a while to actually become a good car, but one of my favorites.
- '94 - '96 Fleetwood - Last of the big, traditional, RWD Cadillacs ryannel2003 03-23-09, 03:15 PM ^I have never been a fan of the '59 fins, though I wouldn't turn down the offer to own one. They are too large and ungainly on anything but the Eldorado Seville and Eldo Barritz. I too prefer the '57's more rounded tail-fin; i have a picture of a '58 Sixty Special on my wall. Gorgeous cars.
I too like Allante; I'd take a '92 since it offers the most comprehensive set of features. The Northstar, IMO, wasn't a significant enough upgrade to justify losing all of the features that made the car stand apart in the earlier years (Delco/Bose stereo, Recaro seats, excellent brakes, etc.) OffThaHorseCEO 03-23-09, 04:35 PM A funny thing about this thread is that the choices are subjective.

4. 1967 Eldorado
5. 1976 Seville billc83 03-23-09, 08:14 PM Nothing to misunderstand there, OffThaHorseCEO; I just find people's differing opinions interesting. Destroyer 03-23-09, 09:30 PM Mid 60's - early 70's Deville convertibles. So gangsta yet so beautiful. Ashame Cadillac doesn't build cars like that anymore. I never wanted Cadillac to try and be a BMW competitor, I wanted them to keep on being Cadillac. They failed. iowasevillests 03-23-09, 10:30 PM Personally I'm a fan of the '59 Flat Top Deville Sedan.....especially the one below(with or without matching trailer). This beauty was at World of Wheels in Omaha this past weekend, sorry for the poor angles, lots of people and cars doesn't make for good photo opportunities.

Mine too, its my favorite since the 1970, from 71-76 they just got too big, too generic, and kind of ugly on the interiors. I love the 77-89 RWD models too, but the 90-92 are trimmed out just a little bit nicer IMO. | |
