Hello all, new to site decided to finally join but have been reading for a couple of months since I purchased a 93 Deville, mint condition, 99,500mi. from an older couple for $3,500. I had previously owned a 93 which I purchased in 93 with a few thousand miles on it. Anyway, my question is, I traded my old 93 in 2000 and it had 115,000 and never used a drop of oil the entire time I owned it. This 93 however is using 1 quart every 1,500mi.. From other posts I have read on this site, which by the way is great, the N* seems to have an oil consumption problem but have found no info on the 4.9. I know that an engine using 1qt. every 700mi. by some manufacturers standards is still within specs. Has anyone had this experience with the 4.9? I have no oil leaks, no smoke coming from the tailpipe, and plenty of power. Should I not worry about it and just keep adding oil? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i was using 1.5 qt per 3000. at night, when somebody is following you, poke the accelerator... i'll bet you see some smoke then! don't worry about it yet though. don't screw with what works!

That is a little high for a 4.9...but....for a 12 year old car with 100K on it...???...why worry. Drive it. Chances are that if you run the engine reasonable hard the oil economy may improve as the rings may be stuck in the piston ring grooves due to the elder couple's driving style. Some WOT and full throttle shifts will help to exercise the rings and loosen them up in the grooves. In any case, oil is cheap. Pour it in when required and drive.

Thank you for your advise. When I purchased the car 2 months ago I gave it a major tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, PCV valve), cleaned the TB & EGR ports, changed oil & filter, fuel filter , trans fluid, coolant and added supplement, and brake fluid flush and refill, new thermostat and upper and lower radiator hoses, fuel injector service, serpentine belt and am going to have all heater hoses replaced soon. After reading your replies I went to the dealer and purchased some Top Engine Cleaner and ran it through the engine and what a difference that made. A ton of stuff came out of the engine, clouds of smoke, but in the end the idle was 100% smoother and tons more power. Took it out on the road and gave it a few WOT runs and the engine just seemed to loosen up. It's perfect again, just like my first 93. No oil consumption in the last 500mi. Thank Y'all again. (Sorry, Texan)
