So we arrived in our hotel about 40 minutes ago. It's a gorgeous 13 story (it goes from 12-14, no 13th floor) Hyatt. It's gorgeous. We're on the 8th floor. We're leaving in about 20 minutes to meet Nicki and Gary out at Lamborghini of Chicago. It was about about a 7.5 hour drive, lunch and all. We stopped for lunch just north of Madison at a horrible Cousin's subs. The service was terrible, the sandwich was horrible (the meatballs in my sub were burned black) and it left us full and dissatisfied. Oh well though, that'll make all the food eaten over the weekend simply superb. We drove about 360 miles, and I got probably 24-25 mpg. I went from a full tank to about 1/3 before I got to the hotel. So how do you like that? From Minneapolis to Chicago on less than a tank of gas!

I'll have my "en route" pics uploaded in just a second...

I'm packed, Hoover's at the puppy slammer (kennel), and I have the alarm set for 4 a.m. :gah: ~90 minutes from my house to PDX, then the 7:45 a.m. flight to Chicago. See you all tomorrow!

They freaking charge $10/day to get online at the Hyatt. I walked over to the window so I could mooch off the Honda dealer across the street. Good speed!

Wow, both that laptop and the Honda dealer have some serious range. Its a good 450 feet from the hotel to that dealership.

The Ridgeline with the plow delivers the lawlz. That was the worst part about owning a Ridgeline....being associated with the people that thought they were real trucks.

Soooo many Continental GTs. There was another row just like behind this one with a couple Flying Spurs too

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v222/gheb88/Chicago%20Meet%202009/IMG_8033.jpg

I don't think that much unsold inventory is supposed to be the "norm" for an Exotic dealer. I know the one in Saint Louis certainly didnt have anything on that magnitude nor do the ones here in Tampa. Sign of the times I guess.

My god, what a great weekend! It was a much better meet than last years! More relaxed, laid back, more touring of downtown Chicago, etc etc. Tanner and I left Nicki's at 4:16, and I got home at 12:04! It was 407 miles from Nicki's to mine, and I went thru 3/4 tank of gas in the entire trip...I got 22.6 MPG on the way back and 24.7 on the way down.

I'll have my pics uploaded within the next few days. I took 377 total and it's gonna take me a while to upload, sort thru and post 'em all.

Can't wait for next year!! :)

After the Bentley dealer we stopped at the Lamborghini dealer, I felt like I died and went to heaven. It was like a private auto show.

Diablo sitting outside with no engine/transmission. Someone must be enjoying that V12 a little too much. Apparently those two rocks will keep it from rolling backwards too.

Finally, I did. From Season 1 of Frasier, the episode "Give Him the Chair!," when Frasier and Niles attempt to replace their father's tacky recliner. About 1:54 into the scene is how I feel about the CTS:

Since Gary has that big-ass camera -- and talent to use it -- I didn't take all that many pictures. Also, I didn't arrive until Saturday afternoon, so I missed out on all the automotive masturbation at the exotic dealerships. Next year, I'm flying out on Friday.

Anyway, thanks to some wrong directions, I ended up walking way the hell in the wrong direction after getting off the El at Wabash and Randolph. Walked up Wabash heading north (past the Hancock) instead of east on Randolph. What should have been a 15-minute walk to Nicki's condo from the El turned into a two-hour odyssey with lots of cussing on my part.

Anyway, I finally arrived, and the view was amazing:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2001.jpg

It made me think of the opening of Green Acres, where Eva Gabor announces "I just adore a penthouse view."

Looking down at the Chicago River and E. Wacker Drive. Like a bunch of middle-school boys, none of us could resist laughing every time anybody said "Wacker."

One of my recent projects at work is a viral campaign to get Benny Beaver, the OSU mascot, out around Portland and beyond. Just Friday, I had to write the copy for a cutout of Benny that we're giving out next month:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/benny_cutout_pbo3.jpg

I volunteered to take a prototype with me, and get a few pictures of Benny around Chicago. Nicki's condo was the perfect place to shoot pictures of Benny pointing out the Chicago skyline:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2004.jpg

And Navy Pier:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2005.jpg

I took him to the Sears Tower Skydeck as well:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2006.jpg

In the Skydeck lobby, there's an amazing Lego model of the Sears Tower:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2007.jpg

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2008.jpg

The view from the Sears was amazing. It was a pretty clear night, and Chicagoland stretches on forever. I attempted a few pictures, but they didn't turn out all that great; I figure Gary will have plenty of good ones.

Dinner at Giordano's was excellent. Hungry as I was, I could only eat three pieces of my Canadian bacon thick crust. But I enjoyed every bite. I also very much enjoyed my Ol' Blue Eyes martini, which Jimmy said looked radioactive (representative picture here from a Google search).

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1027/578281522_8e62f04cb8.jpg?v=0

Got to ride in Jimmy's CTS from downtown back out to the 'burbs. Very nice car. Even riding in the back seat behind Jimmy, I had plenty of room. Not as cavernous as my DeVille, but certainly better than a 3-Series.

Arrived at the hotel about the same time as Jesda and his roommate in the Crossfire. We spotted him in the parking lot and got behind him. Then, for reasons unknown to us, he kept driving around the parking lot at ever increasing speeds. We kept on his tail and flashed our lights, which only made him go faster. It was like Wyle E. Coyote chasing the Roadrunner. Tanner, Jimmy and I don't know what the hell is going on, but we can't stop laughing -- or following him. After I sent a text and tried calling, Jesda finally parks and sees its us. Turns out he had pissed off somebody in a Honda Odyssey who followed him into the parking lot. He had no idea it was us following him. I assume he thought the driver of the Odyssey hired goons to have him whacked.

Jesda, John (Dirt Cheap Fleetwood) and I all took turns driving Chad's S-Class later on. We all gave it high marks. It really is an impressive car, and I still say he got a smoking deal -- for a Krautwagen (Just kidding, Chad).

Car show pics next.

The rest of the car doesn't do much for me, honestly. It looks like an overwrought Continental Mark II or Mark III.

Now, to the good stuff, the CTS-V:

A DTS Platinum. I don't care what anybody says, Cadillac is doing some really nice interiors. This top-of-the-line DTS had extremely soft leather, gorgeous wood trim and a to-die-for suede headliner.

The regular CTS. I actually like the interior of the standard CTS better than the V, despite the suede inserts. The wood in the standard CTS is beautiful:

Exterior design details. GM will bounce back if it continues to build cars like this with such outstanding styling (and quality, reliability and solid driving dynamics).

Only one band gets played though my awesome 1 speaker stereo system, Styx! Save the big band music for the Commies driving your Nazi mobile listening to their national anthem.

I had a hard time getting a picture because the douchey announcer kept walking in front of the car during his schtick. What idiot hired this girly man to talk about the new Camaro? If any car deserves a presentation by a sexy booth babe, it's the Camaro. Dodge did it right with the Challenger last year.

Some detail shots:

Kael's girlfriend, who has a PhD in design, pointed out the flecks of metallic blue in the gray paint on the ZR-1. Anybody remember the old ad slogan, "Nobody sweats the details like GM"? When that was running, GM was building a lot of crap, and the slogan was quite ridiculous. Now, I'd say there's some truth to it.

2010 Buick LaCrosse. Beautiful car saddled with a crummy name. But it's sure a world different from my mother's 2000 Century:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2047.jpg

Finally, a couple of the biggest FAILS of the show:

The Inifinit QX53, a giant SUV so blingy it makes the Escalade look subdued. Check out it's toothy grille:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2048.jpg

And the car that inspired int, the 1958 Buick with the Fashion-Aire Dynastar Grille:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2049.jpg

The hideous new Acura TL. Every Acura has now been saddled with a giant plastic Chevron grille that looks like a big buck tooth:

http://www.q45.org/gdwriter/Chicago_2009/Chicago_2009%20-%2050.jpg

Acura should become the official car of Benny Beaver or the (http://www.braces.org) American Association of Orthodontists (http://www.braces.org).

Unfortunately, because my flight home was much earlier than last year (I got the latest one I could, which left Midway at 3:50), I didn't get to see everything, nor did I make as many snarky comments about all the cars I didn't like. That's mostly because I only had time to look at the cars I did like.

A few more observations, though:

Whoever is in charge of Honda and Acura styling needs to have his crayons taken away. Fugly doesn't begin to cover it.
The Hyundai Genesis coupe is very derivative, especially on the inside, where the center stack and glovebox area mimic the CTS. And it doesn't look nearly as good.
The CTS has the most neatly integrated nav system that I've seen. On most BMWs and the Infinit G37 I sat in, the nav system makes an ugly bulge in the center top of the dash. Tacky.
Speaking of ugly bulges, Chris Bangle left BMW not a moment too soon. All Bangle butts are ugly, but the one on the 6-Series sticks out even worse than most. It looks even more like a bustle than the infamous bustle-back Sevilles of the 80s.
The Lexus attempt at an M or V or AMG Series is saddled with a dumb-ass name. The F in IS-F is supposed to be for Fast, but I think it's for FAIL. Jesda's comment was even better; he says they picked F because all the cool letters were taken.

Anyway, it was a great trip as always. Enjoyed seeing old friends (Chad, Jesda, Tanner, Nicki, Gary, Kael) and meeting a couple of new ones (Jimmy, John). I'm up for doing it again next year.

Downtown Chicago time!

The women in Chicago, generally speaking, are better looking then the ones in Minnesota

Sears Tower from outside Union Station. God that thing's massive. It's almost twice the height of the tallest building in Minneapolis (IDS Center, 775 feet v. Sears Tower at 1454 before antenna).
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3168.jpg

Some other random skyscraper near the Chicago river. I love skyscrapers.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3169.jpg

This one's right next to the Sears Tower. It's called 311 South Wacker and stands 961 feet tall, but next to the Sears....it's miniature.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3172.jpg

I used to think that the Sears was cold, sterile and bland, but after seeing it in person, I really appreciate the uniqueness of the design.

The lobby/plaza.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3174.jpg

So massive! It's still the tallest building in the world, not counting spires, but it won't be for a few more years. There is construction of a new skyscraper, out east somewhere that's about 1600 feet tall.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3175.jpg

Trump's tower in Chicago. This one is the exact same height as the World Trade Center (1362 feet). What an egomaniac.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3178.jpg

Nearing Nicki's apartment, we crossed the Prudential Plaza and the AON Center. The AON is 1136 feet, 9 feet taller than the Hancock, and the Prudential Plaza's two buildings are 601 and 995 feet.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3182.jpg

For as cold and sterile as the AON is, it had a really nice ground level plaza/park. I still think it's a cool building though.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3181.jpg

I think that's Nicki's apartment building. She's on the 36th floor, out of 52. Oh it must be hard ;) :bigroll:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3187.jpg

The AON from the plaza outside Nicki's place. Interesting tidbit: The Hancock was completed in '69 and is 1127 feet, the AON was completed in '73 at 1136 feet and the Sears was completed in '74 at 1454 feet, so for a few years Chicago had a "war of heights" going on.

I did the same walking tour of Chicago when my train stopped at union station a couple years ago. Its a really beautiful city on foot.

Couldn't do it this time. Knee pain comes and goes. Next year I'm bringing a wheelchair. Who wants to push!

Of course I was even more tempted to pick up the DeLorean in Lake Zurich for $15k.
I still am determined to own a snow white Countach. someday. :dreamer:

Acura should become the official car of Benny Beaver or the American Association of Orthodontists (http://www.braces.org).

Fugly doesn't begin to cover it.

blah blah blah. yes, everyone hates the new Acuras. Except me. the looks are memorable and striking. quite masculine. the RDX, TSX, TL, all great designs, IMO...

Downtown Chicago time!

The women in Chicago, generally speaking, are better looking then the ones in Minnesota
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3164.jpg

Sears Tower from outside Union Station. God that thing's massive. It's almost twice the height of the tallest building in Minneapolis (IDS Center, 775 feet v. Sears Tower at 1454 before antenna).
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3168.jpg

Some other random skyscraper near the Chicago river. I love skyscrapers.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3169.jpg

This one's right next to the Sears Tower. It's called 311 South Wacker and stands 961 feet tall, but next to the Sears....it's miniature.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3172.jpg

I used to think that the Sears was cold, sterile and bland, but after seeing it in person, I really appreciate the uniqueness of the design.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3173.jpg

The lobby/plaza.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3174.jpg

So massive! It's still the tallest building in the world, not counting spires, but it won't be for a few more years. There is construction of a new skyscraper, out east somewhere that's about 1600 feet tall.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3175.jpg

Trump's tower in Chicago. This one is the exact same height as the World Trade Center (1362 feet). What an egomaniac.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3178.jpg

Nearing Nicki's apartment, we crossed the Prudential Plaza and the AON Center. The AON is 1136 feet, 9 feet taller than the Hancock, and the Prudential Plaza's two buildings are 601 and 995 feet.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3182.jpg

For as cold and sterile as the AON is, it had a really nice ground level plaza/park. I still think it's a cool building though.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3181.jpg

I think that's Nicki's apartment building. She's on the 36th floor, out of 52. Oh it must be hard ;) :bigroll:
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3187.jpg

The AON from the plaza outside Nicki's place. Interesting tidbit: The Hancock was completed in '69 and is 1127 feet, the AON was completed in '73 at 1136 feet and the Sears was completed in '74 at 1454 feet, so for a few years Chicago had a "war of heights" going on.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Chadillac8705/2009%20Chicago%20Meet/IMG_3186.jpg

thebigjimsho

It's also built on the chassis that has gotten rave reviews for its driving dynamics. And after having spent a couple days driving one (even if it was just an I4) I have to agree. Steering reponse and chassis feel were excellent. And we got about 32 mpg with it.

I think they should start offering light hybrid options on more cars.
Just enough to kill the engine when you stop, and something to propel the car from 0-10mph or so. With the amount of time I sit in slow moving traffic, and waiting at stop lights, I bet that alone would give me another 5 mpg. Kind of like the trolling motor on a boat.
I just don't want the undersized engine they install on mild hybrids.

Alcohol + Pools = Having to quickly evacuate pool due to floating vomit. :alchi::bonkers:

It would be cool though if you guys could crash at Nicki's. We could meet a few more times a year then because you won't have to spring for a hotel each time. The most expensive thing would be gas to get here. With the size of the stove we could easily cook enough food to feed a dozen people and we wouldn't have to go out for each meal. A casual weekend (not very structured, just go with the flow) 3-4 times a year would be really fun.

Ok, if Nick doesn't step up, I will step in. I am not organizing anything in the city though, that is for sure. I could get a hold of Union Grove, and find out when track days are, what the cost is, etc. http://www.greatlakesdragaway.com/ An autocross meet would be really great, unfortunately autocross is almost nonexistent around here.\

Yeah, gotta have the meet in the Chicago area this year. Spring or early summer is best, I'd say any time between May 1 and June 30th. It's unfortunate Nick is so busy, he always does a bang-up job planning this meets, but it would be awesome if you wanted to take on the task Jimmy. We should probably get a thread going in the meet forum.

The console gauges are an homage to the '69 Camaro. Since it's a modern interpretation of the original design, the fact that it's less ergonomic doesn't bother me.

Yeah, there's more cheap plastic than I'd like to see in the Camaro, but it's at least a nice job styling wise. Better than the Challenger, which to me is kind of dull.

Was that 3500 foot skyscraper gonna be in Chicago?

Weirdest thing I ever saw was a concept for a 12,000 foot (!!!) skyscraper outside of Tokyo. Let's see if I can find a picture...

It was called the X-Seed 4000 and was a concept, it was never meant to be built, but the pictures of it are so interesting.

For holidays/ special events and stuff, they can change the color of both the spires on the Sears Tower, and the corona of 311 S. Wacker. Example: Red and Green for Christmas. When you live in Chicago you can get a real sense of how tall it really is; on clear days I can see it from my house, and I'm well over 30 miles away.

Another interesting tid-bit is that the pile under the building is as deep into the earth as the building is above it. Nearly 1,500 feet!

It's actually supposed to symbolize a ring. There is some story that the contractor of the building lost his fiancee and he made the top into a ring to symbolize his love. Plus she can look down from heaven and see it. ... At least that is what I was told on one of the Sears Tower tour thingies.
