I Was under the impression that the Y code was the better engine but from reading one of the messages here it was explained as the Y code is 295 and the 9 code is 270.

Which is correct? And just when I'm starting to think I have the better one.

Also what chances are there to put a 295hp engine in where a 270hp engine was? too much work for the performance difference?

Code 9 is the STS 295 hp

Code Y SLS 275 hp

The main difference between the 2 engines is the cams. And you have more torque at lower rpm on the SLS. The differential ratio is also different but i dont remember the exaxt number.

I think its 3.73 for the 9 and 3.11 for the Y.

You don't want to swap engines. You'll have the wrong final drive. Even if you swap tranny's as well, you'll still have the wrong PCM. Way to much work and $$$ for a few ponies.
Which is better? Personal preference. The "Y" will give you more low end torque and better gas milage. The "9" will give you more HP...... at 6000 RPM. How often are you at 6000 RPM?
