We have a 1991 DeVille with 150,000 miles. 4.9 engine.

1. I have been unsuccessful getting any diagnostic codes to display on the ECM. I hold down the OFF and WARMER buttons until all the symbols light up on the display and then it just sits there with 3 dashes "---". When the full display lights up, 188 shows up in the digits area, otherwise, nothing. I have also tried to hold the buttons for up to 60 seconds... but same result.

Any suggestions on what might be the problem? Probably "user error"!

2. I had the tranny flushed recently and the service station power washed the engine. Since then, the car has been running intermittently. Meaning, I can drive for awhile and then it just dies. If the car sits for 10 minutes or something like that, it will start and run for awhile. I replaced modulator, rotor and distributor cap. Now... the car starts and idles... however, whenever the accelerator is pushed even slightly the car cuts out and dies. However, I can keep it running if I softly pump the accelerator to keep it running. It will run at higher RPM once it is nursed past that point, but still acts like it is starving/hesitating when the accerlator is pushed. I have not driven it any distance since replacing the mod, dist and rotor to know if it still dies once it warms up.

Thoughts one what could be the problem?

My father-in-law gave this car to my step-daughter. It is my understanding that the engine was rebuilt about 2 years ago.

Thank you!
Jerry

I wanted to be sure all the fluid was removed and all new put in because it strangely smelled, felt and looked like someone had errantly put some motor oil in the tranny.

The tranny is running great... just the car is a prob.

Thank you
Jerry

i'd check for vacuum lines pulled (rather blown) off. do a good visual check...make sure everything is on and where it needs to be.

sounds like the water from the wash shorted out an electrical component(sensors).had this happen to me before, turned out to be the intake air temp sensor, give that a check, could also be any other host of sensors too.also, you might want to take it to a reputable garage and have them run a scan tool to pinpoint the exact problem if you obd is not working properly. good luck on the car.
