Has the car been sitting for a long period of time? My 83 Coupe squeaked too after being stored for the winter but the squeaking went away after about 50 miles of driving.

Even if you buy a new speedo cable you'll need to lubricate the new one before placing it in service. May as well buy a tube of genuine GM Speedometer Cable Lubricant anyway.
Check behind the dash & under the hood to see if there are any sharp bends in the cable jacket; should be none, only gentle curves. Try to increase the radius of the curves as much as possible before removing & lubricating the old steel speedo drive cable.
Once you get the old cable cleaned & lubed should be quiet & speedo readings stable. If not, try a new speedo cable assy. Sometimes if there has been a significant kink in the speedo line the plastic gears at the transmission output become severely worn from the stress of driving the kinked cable.
