What 2 Do About GM's OHC V8 Engine.... How about the Mainstreaming of the 4.4L SC NS?
What could be done is Direct-Injecting the Northstar... or even better... using the 4.4L S/C from the Vseries detuned from 443HP to 385-395HP for the CTS, STS, and XLR... then giving the same engine better breathing elements and a slightly more aggressive exhaust and ECM tune taking the 469HP (STS-V) to at least 510HP for the Vseries program.. this for the time being would give it a class leading engine (ok ok... with exception to the AMG V12 in the SL65) this considering that in the XLR-V the 443HP engine allows it to actually STILL keep up with the SL65 despite it's 160HP advantage... Such is the engineering greatness of GM...http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/yup.gif

THIS IS ABOUT HORSEPOWER... and I am obsessed... as Infiniti (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) may be giving the 5.0L (boosted to about 420HP) in the FX50 to the replacement for the, now 5 year old, M45... which is said to be based on the GT-R's platform in an effort for Nissan to make money on that platform. Nissan has commented the GTR is not a profitable car... and is possibly looking at a HYPO "GT-R" sedan to offset costs... BMW will be TWIN-TURBOing their V8.. and GM has killed ULTRA. THey already have the 4.4L which reliably puts out more than enough power to compete...

I am talking more of a short-term solution that could be put in place like YESTERDAY. Pulling the 4.4L off the "hand built" assembly line... and putting it in place of the 4.6L's mass production seems to be the quickest solution to the OHC problem in the Cadillac line.

It's not unprecedented or a cop-out since most of the Foreign Luxo makers are doing the same thing.. The Jaguar (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) V8 actually uses a 5.0L S/C to achieve the 510HP... this is literally 41 more than the STS-V has... Anyone who knows engine modification can tell U that achieving 40 more HP is relatively easy to do with a tune or breathing mod... altho an exhaust mod would do it quicker. While Jag does it with their 5.0L.. Caddy could do it with 4.4Ls

Check this out:

a 320HP 4.6L STS gets 15/24... a 469HP 4.4L STS gets 13/19.. Surely a detuned 395HP version.. 76HP less, even without DI, would achieve... say 15/22 with better breathing

Another example is the XLR and the XLR V... where the 443HP 4.4L only loses 1MPG both city and highway over the 320HP versionhttp://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif These two cars are differentiated by 123HPhttp://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif

a ZR1 is rated to 638HP while my Z51 is rated at 436HP.. a 202HP difference and no weight difference of merit.. yet the SUPER-CHARGED version only loses 2MPG City and 6MPG HYW which I have to discount because the 6th gear in the Z51 is was more geared to Fuel Economy (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) as U can't even achieve top speed in 6th.. U have to do it in 5th.. not so in the ZR1

and because of all those things.. I suggested the QUICK solution of Detuning the S/C 4.4L Northstar to get a lower level amount of power for the "normal cars... then upgrading it slightly to push it ahead for "Vseries" cars that would still command respect when looked at from the competition. Currently Benz has 382-518HP coming from it's 6.2L V8.. BMW has from 360-500.. while Lexus (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) tops out at 380 and Audi (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) 420... Jag now has a range topper at 510HP with it's 5.0L S/C V8 in the XKR... Cadillac (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) goes from 320-556HP but GM can do better.. and we all kno it.

I can't even justify in my mind how the CTS-V is allowed to have more power than the two FLAGSHIPS STS and CLR-V

D3 Concepts has this:

Stage 1.5 Power Package MSRP $3,090.00
Application: 2006-2008 STS-V
Horsepower Increased to = 525+ bhp
(Includes Stage 1&2 Intake, ECU Chip Upgrade, and Corsa Exhaust)

Product Description This is our introductory package which includes Stage 1, ECU Box, Corsa Exhaust System. It is a relatively simple and quick bolt on package that will boost engine power to over 505 bhp. This is a very popular upgrade for V-Series owners.

and it could EASILY be done by Cadillac for less.

Lastly...Now.. with an "SLS" as the Flagship.. that default V8 position would fall on that car's sales in it's entirety.. but still.. in the U.S. U would still only see about 20K sales of that car.. (based on S-Class and LS numbers) Key to gaining those sales would be a diversified SLS line... with an entry level car starting at the $65K mark ending at $150K (DI 4.4L S/C 600hp Super V with 2-Mode techhttp://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif )... with a POWERFUL engine for bragging rights (as that is what this segment is ALL about), a class-leading interior (which at this point is completely doable looking at the lower level CTS, Lacrosse, and even Malibu styling) but with highest grade materials and well integrated tech (as confusing to the consumer as possible as this seems to be well receivedhttp://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif), and EYE-POPPINGhttp://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif exterior styling.. possibly a revised SIXTEEN.

This car would have NOTHING to do with Cadillac's giving a damn about CAFE... It would essentially be a 2010-style "Car Escalade"..http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/yup.gif without the negative SUV stigma.http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif A Dual Mode version would of course be available... and would surely get better fuel economy (http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/#) to tout that the LS600hL... which gets the SAME fuel economy as the Hybrid Escalade... http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif
