Greetings!

I've just bought a 91 Sedan Deville and I love the car, but the stock radio is horrible :(

I've already picked up a mounting bracket to throw a deck in it, but I'm wondering what suggestions any of you might have on doing this. Has anyone run into any problems that are worth noting? I'm thinking since the factory deck (it's just a cassete) is slanted in the dash, I'm going to be very short on space in there.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

it won't matter the deck is put in slanted because of the air box in the dash for the front vents, and no problems from my car which is a 90 but pretty much the same as your radio.took me about 15 minutes to put new mounting kit in and deck all wired up,makes a huge difference.just curious what deck brand are you gonna get or have?

Good to know it should be straight forward. I picked up last years top end Clarion at a clearance to get rid of all the "old" stuff for half price :) I'm also going to throw in a Fosgate 12" sub and if I can find them I'll add Cerwin Vega 6x9's. The deck puts out 55wx4 so I'll probably have to amp up the 6x9's but that will be another project.

Elsewhere I have pics and info on my Sony changer installation in my '90 SDV.

Here is a summary of the upgrades I made in order of "improvement value"

- Replace dash speakers with kenwood 2-way. Old speakers were so sun bleached that the cones had cumbled.

- Replace rear deck speakers with JBL 3-way. Old speakers were not sun damaged but had poor freq response. NOTE that I had to make my own speaker adaptors since the OEM speaker wiring is nonstandard.

- Added Sony 10-disc CD/MP3 changer in trunk. Yes it's an FM modulated unit but it does the job fine I think. The wiring was fairly easy and I combined the changer installation with the rear deck speaker installation so I only had to take the back seat out once.

Notes:

The pics on carstereohelp.com were a BIG help for removing the dash pad and the rear seat. Check them out.

The stock head unit seems OK for my purposes. If you want slammin' watts or want to blow the trunk open with the sonic wave, I can see why you'd want to replace it but the Symphony Sound unit's power seems adequate to me and it has a built in equalizer. Keeping the cassette deck is nice also for books on tape, etc.

Problems:

My dash pad had warped a small amount from sun exposure. I am surprised that it doesn't "clip" to anything at the most forward outer leading edges. When I turn up the volume the dash pad rattles enough to be irritating. To get past this I fade more toward the rear when turning up the volume past a certain point. At some time I might want to put a rubber or silicone bumper between the dash pad and the dash/windshield. I am not looking forward to taking the dash apart "again" so this is not likely to happen any time soon.

if you use a 1 1/2 din sized unit you dont even need an adapter. I have a Premier (by pioneer) deck, and it was literally a 5 minute thing, slid right in , same faceplate screwed back on ...Bingo.Crutchfield has a few that size.
I have 6 Infinity Kappa speakers, and two 10 inch Bazookas with 400 watt amp in trunk.

wow no wonder why that fit kit is WRONG!!! look at the huge gap at the top it leaves. the purpose of the fit kit is to fill the space of the old deck. you def need to get the correct fit kit 1st.

THIS is what a fit kit looks like and should do on a 96+ Eldo

true but every audio shop ive been to says i just need the brackets from the factory cd player...then it will fit better they said it would be because the kits available most likely wont hold that plastic woodgrain trim in place (its not like it stays on now anyways) any suggestions???!?!?!

well i seriously think its the wrong kit. try looking around for another fit kit with pic and see if it looks the same. if not do some junkyard hopping find stocky and theres your brackets

junk yard wants 50$ for brackets because i have to buy radio along with it which is really stupid but 1 ? did you just buy the dash kit then install or did you buy dash kit and remove brackets from fatory then install??..or did you get it pro installed

install myself always i dont like other people touching my baby. most dbl din hus dont need brackets the fit kit would function as them and hold it in. just like on my fit kit my radio had a bracket which held the ac controls and my info center controls up and the replacement fit kit came with a bracket which connected to the fit kit and the ac and info controls

I have a 91 sedan deville. I installed my headunit with no problems. Except i bought it at pepboys and the only installation kit they had was a universal GM one, so theres some gaps. A specific kit should cover all the gaps and look nice.
